jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Thornton was the Astros 24th ranked prospect according to MLB.com.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Seems like a lighter return than I would have hoped for at a quick glance
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Mechanically, Thornton seems like a reliever. Not sure about this. Toronto does have a roster crunch. But Diaz had four years of control left and he's a useful (league average) SS. I guess we'll be seeing Gurriel at SS full time, and Travis is going nowhere this offseason.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 tough to get too excited for Thornton. Hopefully the FO see something we don't. If Diaz just wasn't in the plan I have no issue moving on from him tho.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Discuss I loved him at UNC. After his Freshman year I thought he would be the "Next one"...he was not! He's obviously a guy that they think they can get through the rule 5 and it will free up a roster spot until April and Tulo can take his rightful spot on the 60 day. Says something as well about what they think of Lourdes.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Pretty light return if you ask me. Astros get their new Marwin Gonzalez.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 This is an awful return and you won't convince me otherwise. This is the first time I can recall that I've been left scratching my head at a move this FO has made, so I'll give them that. That's not to say that Thornton isn't a hidden gem, but it's not a good return for a league average SS with four years of control remaining.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Seems light for sure imo
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Of course Mike Wilner thinks its a good trade!

Corporal Valdal Verified Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Does anyone suck more dick in the media than Wilner? No and thats why I stopped listening to him 5 years ago. The guy is a f***ing clown man.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Of course Mike Wilner thinks its a good trade! Where did he say that?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 I know nothing about this guy so I won’t say it’s good or bad because I honestly have no idea, but definitely seems light. Diaz has four years of control left and is probably the best SS on the team right now. I guess Travis, Gurriel, and Drury will be the IF to start the year.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 I don't understand the impetus for this trade. I'm not convinced that Gurriel Jr. is a good shortstop and we're pretty thin at that position now. Diaz was a solid performer at league minimum and they were obviously desperate to get rid of him. Very strange.
tazsub3 Verified Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Seems light for sure imo I would say it is a swing for the fences trade. Trade a position of strength, for a potential home run .
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Terrible. 1.6 WAR last year, with a weak BABIP. Four years of control. Relatively young. Pretty sure we could have found a way to keep him on the 25 and gotten a lot more value for hi, even if we're going with Gurriel at SS going forward.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 I didn’t follow Cistulli ‘s fringe 5, how often did it come out? Could this be his first contribution? Unlikely as he likely hasn’t started yet...
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 The only way this deal makes sense is its somehow for some reason a delayed part of the osuna deal
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Everyone should remember that we traded JB Woodman for Diaz. Maybe he's not as valuable in trade as we think.
tercet Verified Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 So you trade a legit position player for a SP lottery ticket, to get Gurribabip more PA despite the fact that he is terrible?
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Does anyone suck more dick in the media than Wilner? Well that one time he criticized cito he got suspended. I think I remember him saying he's not going to be critical of anyone anymore to preserve his job.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Everyone should remember that we traded JB Woodman for Diaz. Maybe he's not as valuable in trade as we think. This was after he put up a replacement level season, not after a league average one where he can play a passable shortstop. I'm very puzzled by this deal, it seems that even if they completely love Thornton that they should have been able to get more added to that deal. On the surface he's a low walks old starter who potentially discovered some strikeout ability this season, but not enough to blow you away given the age/level, and has a very weird delivery which I honestly don't really care about unless that's a detriment to his health for whatever reason.

Unlikely as he likely hasn’t started yet... It was a regular post on Fangraphs but I don't think Thornton ever made the list. His stats weren't good enough.
