So...does he not want to manage here? I'm confused. It doesn't sound like Atkins wanted him to go. He seemed to not be willing to go through a "rebuild". I had just assumed he wanted to go home to Texas but he wants to keep managing?

What is going on?!

Rangers have an opening...

This whole Gibby thing sucks. 20 years from now no one will remember any of our past managers but for Cito Gaston and Gibby. Dude is a Jays icon. I feel like they could have come to some sort of agreement with him staying.

I wonder what happened behind the scenes. Maybe he asked for an extension and never got one and didn't feel like managing a rebuilding team next year on a lame duck contract. That would probably be miserable because as the team struggles to a 70 win season he'd be asked daily about not coming back next year.

Yeah my guess is he wanted to stay but not as a lame duck, so at that point you either had to extend him or fire him. The Jays chose the latter.

In this case change is good. The Caveat being who they choose to replace him. If they make the right choice, Gibbons will be quickly forgotten, mark my words.

If they dont choose wisely and it is jjust some old re-tread.. (Wedge for example) Then we might miss the “Good ole days of Gibbons”.

Or maybe he really wants to go home to Texas

I'd bring in a re-tread with managing experience for 2019, with John Schneider as bench coach so he gets accustomed to MLB style, and there may be a few actual things worth learning from an old vet. Then promote John to manager for 2020.

This literally never happens.

Schneider is a bunter, next..

Regardless, he is a winner.

Some might say he has had great talent. I disagree. Plenty of teams with great talent have not been able to win s***.

You can have a 12 cylinder Lamborgini, but if only 4 of those cylinders are firing in sync, you might as well have a Prius.

His job, and I believe he has the ability, is to set the enviroment, create buy in for the mission, give tools for sucess and make solid in game and pre-game decisions.

Keep all 12 cylinders tuned and firing all at once.

I think he is a winner and can breed winners!

Dude I plan to be around in 20 years and remember the best Blue Jays manager ever, Bobby Cox, and the 2nd best, Bobby Mattick.

I forgot about Bobby Cox but he's known as the Braves manager. Never heard of Bobby Mattick but I looked him up and he had a .388 w% in a season and a half so I assume you're joking about him. lol

Bobby Mattick is in the Cdn Baseball HOF and the Dunedin complex is the Bobby Mattick Training Centre. He is a guy held in high esteem by knowledgeable baseball people. He was asked to keep managing but stepped down, was getting too old.

Not his fault he was manager in the club's early years.

Yeah, I more subscribe to the idea that winners are made up of good players

I hate to see him go, but very happy he was able to get a send off that few managers would get to experience.

Agreed, its not often you see a team post back to back losing seasons and send off the manager with dignity. Classy for all around!

Hey Mike Wilner.. So no such thing as overachievers, underachievers, very talented teams that have underachieved . Less “talented” teams that have overachieved.

I will call you on Jays talk and explain why you are wrong.

Damn. This brings smile to my face. Finally!

I would have said this and agreed with you after 2015, but 2016-18 (aka Gibby 2.0) was fine. He adapted to the new front office better than anyone could have dreamed of. Unfortunately for him, he stayed long enough to see the inevitable happen (while his buddy AA left at the best time).

As long as they don't hire Wedge (that seems like a really bad idea), I doubt we will see much difference. Managers nowadays are extensions of the front office. It will probably be a suit and tie analytics guy (aka the reflection of Shatkins).

I think we will all miss Gibby's personality more than anything else.

I wholeheartedly enjoyed this afternoon very much. For a game that meant nothing in the standing for the Jays being over 30 games out of first it was a special one. Having watched the press conference prior to heading down to the park, it was very cool once I got there from the standing ovation during the exchange of the lineup cards to one during each mound visit and finally a Gatorade shower during his post game interview on on the field. Today was the perfect example of how a ball club can handle these situations with class and dignity. I can totally see Gibby with a smile on his face enjoying a cold one or two on the flight down to Tampa. Cheers to him.
