glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 I honestly only feel happiness. I hope they win it all this year. A team that’s under .500 against every team not in the AL Central (last time I checked) should not win it all. They basically have one Blue Jays and three Orioles in their division. I’d rather the Red Sox win than Cleveland, and I hate everything about Boston.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 I'm rooting for the A's tbh.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 LETS GO OAKLAND *CLAP, CLAP* *CLAP, CLAP, CLAP* Honestly, I don't care as long as the Red Sox or Yankees are done, plus good baseball.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 I'm rooting for the A's tbh. What happened to the Yankees?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 I would root for the A's, but I think a Yankees/Red Sox ALDS is better for baseball. I know baseball is almost entirely regional now, but that is the one series that will get some mainstream publicity. I hate seeing MLB ignored.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 What happened to the Yankees? I want to see Matt Olson win a ring Oh, and what happened to you blocking me, dick?

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 It would have been absurd to trade Donaldson for Flaherty and like Gomber or something in the offseason. trading Donaldson for a guy who will never play in the majors seems equally absurd.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 trading Donaldson for a guy who will never play in the majors seems equally absurd. lol... and here we are. No-one foreseen JD playing 30 games aside from jimcanuck, that take was is and will always be better than a 2nd round comp pick. Don't be so obtuse.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 I had Flaherty pegged as a stud so I'm allowed to be as remorseful as I want over this hypothetical scenario. lol... f***-off.

After a strong start to the season with Double-A Akron, he was promoted to Triple-A at the end of May. While Merryweather's results suffered down the stretch with the Clippers, his stuff and peripherals remained strong. Merryweather has the stuff to start, but still is learning some of the finer points of pitching. His fastball sits in the mid 90s and regularly reaches 97 mph. His changeup can be an above-average pitch with fading action, but he will need to tighten the pitch up to get hitters to chase it more often. He throws both a curveball and a slider, which can be average offerings. He does a good job of using his 6-foot-4 frame to his advantage and works well down in the strike zone to create groundouts. He throws a lot of strikes and repeats his delivery well. Merryweather has the potential to be a starter in the big leagues, but he will be 26 on Opening Day and breaking into the Indians' already crowded rotation is no easy task. He'll start 2018 back at Columbus and have a chance to pitch his way into the mix in Cleveland. Turns out that was foolish. Merryweather is 25 but he’s pitched his way to Columbus and he carved up one of the more talented lineups in the International League yesterday, garnering swings and misses with all three pitches. He’s deceptive, athletic, touched 95 several times, flashed a plus curveball and changeup, and despite some issues timing all the moving parts of his delivery, he threw lots of strikes. There are scouts who think he fits better in relief, but he has mid-rotation stuff. Better percentile than any f***ing 2nd round sandwich pick at 75-80 I Said Good Day!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 Merryweather's age 26 season was wiped out due to injury, otherwise he probably reaches the bigs this year (either for the Indians or another team). He will be 27 next year and at least half the season will probably be lost (and the other half will be spent rehabbing), but in a best case if he's ready to start in 2020, that covers age 28-33. Not young, but not ancient either.

For the record, Merryweather clears the age 28 hurdle next season by two and a half months. Jul. 31 is the cut-off for birthdays.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 Don't forget Blue Jays legend Matt Boyd serving them up. Boyd has had a quietly effective year this year. He's up to 2.6 WAR, decent walk and K rates.

I'm not saying they're the same at all, but obviously the same FO that found this hidden gem might be capable of finding another solid starter who's devalued heavily due to age and injury.

Ok, I didn't realize the age cutoff wasn't season end, but he's still an old 27 next year. He could be an outlier. A second round pick would be far more valuable. In a couple years we can revisit and see if he's an outlier, until then I will continue to consider him garbage. He's a back end starter at best, more likely a bullpen guy with an injury history.

Second round picks whom make it to triple AAA, with good stuff and numbers no less-- is much less likely than you think. Again this front office's history of finding excellent pitchers out of nowhere is well documented, so I'd give them some leeway of finding a decent player.
