Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 You should check Twitter. People are almost gleeful about the opportunity to tear down a successful person because of stupid things he said when he was 17. A bunch of ‘he’s done’ and ‘there’s no coming back from this’ tweets. It’s socially acceptable bullying. Thanks, I'd rather blow my brains out
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 You'd think the MLB teams would give basic social media training to its players. This could have been avoided by him starting a new twitter account when he became a professional. Hardy avoidable. Once it's out there, it's out there forever
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Hardy avoidable. Once it's out there, it's out there forever His current account now has the blue tick that shows it's authentic. If he switched his account once he was drafted, then got a tick on the new account once he became well known enough to be eligible for one, it gives more weight to the excuse of "I was a dumb kid who didn't know any better". If he'd taken the extra step of deleting the old account, it'd also mean the only way someone would find the old tweets would be if they had followed him and knew him at the time, and had the motivation to save the tweets.
onwego Verified Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Lol. What year do you think we live in? Social Media won't allow anything to be forgotten. Ever. and then it will happen to them, hope they are powerful enough to try to have it ignored or whitewashed for them by friends
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Hader is going to face some major backlash. Constant booing and protests, and this will go on for at least the rest of the year, and probably follow him all of his career to a lesser degree. It will also diminish his value considerably. A lot of teams (owned by corporations such as Rogers), won't be able to take him - and his market will be a third of the teams in the league. Attanasio should be able to weather the storm, but the Brewers organization will be inundated with letters and calls from people threatening to not go to Brewers games while he is there. Additionally, you may see some pressure for other corporations to stop sponsoring the Brewers, until they get rid of Hader. He's offended three loud, vocal identity groups, so there will be no shortage of Hader haters. Will be interesting to see what MLB and the Brewers do, given that he was underage at the time. Still, this isn't going to be about what's fair. This is going to be about virtue signalling. It wasn't fair to ban Donald Sterling for life, based on the contents of a private phone call, but that's what they did.
onwego Verified Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 so your rebel-without-a-cause son types in that "dad was racist again tonight, he's such a jerk" and it's not remotely true...
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 You guys are overreacting. John Rocker's career moved on and so will Hader's.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 You guys are overreacting. John Rocker's career moved on and so will Hader's. But didn't that happen 15-20 years ago? The world is completely different now. Your fart can't come out sounding homophobic, racist, or sexist today without facing castration.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 It will pass. There will always be a few hanging around but overall he's got to do what he can to make a positive of it. Work with You Can Play. Talk about how homophobic slurs online are at their worst during sporting events and how it's up to the players to help change the language. What I don't get is that he went through 3 organizations, was looked at by several colleges and committed to Maryland. Teams have guys looking at this stuff, how did no one catch it? Even if it is an old account. When I went back to school there was one of our classes that asked us to look at our social media and get rid of things that might come back to haunt us. He's done a good job now at owning up to it, and he may have to be thick-skinned for a while but this will be nothing soon.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Where's Ray Donovan when you need him?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Who dug these up anyway? Just a general troll?

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Keith Law is losing his marbles over these tweets. Imagine having him as a GM; I know some teams have tossed around the idea before. Your team would be ran by a cross between JP Riccardi and Jen Ramos.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 (edited) Keith Law is losing his marbles over these tweets. Imagine having him as a GM; I know some teams have tossed around the idea before. Your team would be ran by a cross between JP Riccardi and Jen Ramos. He's merely saying that apologizing isn't enough. Don't think this is the worst he's been. It's the guys defending it that are taking it to the extreme trying to put words in people's mouths. Saying things like "what should we do...hang him for something he did when he was 17" "suspending him 50 games for something he did 10 years ago". Law is just saying that it's not enough to apologize. Actions speak louder than words. Edited July 18, 2018 by TheHurl
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Why wouldn't it be enough to apologize? He publicly said stupid things 7 years ago as a 17-year old. What could people possibly expect other than an apology?

What could people possibly expect other than an apology? He should shave his head in an act of contrition and donate it to a charity that provides wigs for black transgender youths living with HIV.

bendera3 Verified Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 I think any result that occurs in disciplinary action is absolutely dumb. All he said was dumb stuff that was on his mind and that's not a crime.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Law said that Hader should be suspended. Is there a statue of limitations for something like this? Or at the very least, what is a reasonable age to say, ya he was a kid... He's matured since then? 15? 13? 6?

King Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2018 Author Posted July 18, 2018 He should fire his agent lol I don't understand why teams don't have an unpaid intern go through all the twitter accounts to ensure there's nothing that could end up like this. Not only that, but players themselves or agents. This has happened more than enough times now. I spent 5 minutes last night searching for this stuff and found tons of prospects dropping n bombs and other slurs. All it takes is one person to retweet it and it's a PR nightmare.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Am I missing something...I thought I heard most of the tweets were song lyrics?
