The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Average defender, average power, doesn't walk, doesn't hit for much power. This is a salary dump for a potential backup infielder. Pick all that up from the radio?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 (edited) Is this an actual quote? Because if not it’s a perfect Grant. https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/7124-Around-Baseball-2017?p=1133860#post1133860 Edited June 29, 2018 by Spanky99
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 June 29: Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets that the Blue Jays included $1.66MM as part of the deal. That’s a bit more than half of what Pearce is owed through season’s end and will help to keep the Red Sox from eclipsing the top tier of penalties in the luxury tax bracket. Boston is just narrowly shy of exceeding the tax threshold by a total of $40MM. Were Boston to cross that $237MM threshold, the team’s top pick in next year’s draft would be moved back 10 spaces.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 I figured it wouldn't be the full amount, seemed like we were giving up too much.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 This kid seems like an actual prospect. I didn’t expect to get that from Steve Pearce. 23 year old in A+ doesn't exactly scream "actual prospect" to me. Major league utility infielder with some speed seems like the most we could realistically expect from this dude, who -- let's be honest -- none of us ever heard of before yesterday.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Was he on Boston's Top 30? 15th on Soxprospects.com http://soxprospects.com/ Could turn out to be a very shrewd pickup for the Jays.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Was he on Boston's Top 30? pre-season? no. Not per MLB.com It looks to me like we are taking a flyer on a guy who's shown some significant advancements over the first half of the 2018 season. Will he be able to sustain that development and/or will it carry over into the higher levels? Nobody knows. He's a lottery ticket - exactly what we should expect to get for someone like Steve Pearce.

For anyone who reads the fringe 5 on FG would have. One of the few articles on FG these days that's worth reading.

MarcoSanchez Verified Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Looks like his line drive rates have significantly improved.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 15th on Soxprospects.com http://soxprospects.com/ Could turn out to be a very shrewd pickup for the Jays. It's worth noting that this 15th place ranking comes from a bottom 5 farm system.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Nobody is saying he's a top tier prospect, he may be a utility guy or he maybe nothing. I'll take that lottery ticket for rental platoon player who can't stay healthy. It was already going to be hard to fit him into the lineup with Morales, Smoak and our OF surplus.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 It's worth noting that this 15th place ranking comes from a bottoLm 5 farm system. Lol its funny how salty you are about the Red Sox.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 I would love for Grant to write strictly about the Red Sox it would be the most entertaining site on the net. In this case he's right though...the Red Sox system is pretty bad right now
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 So we get a Top 20ish type of fringe prospect and save $1.5M in the process.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 + Samad Taylor.... He is only 19. He's hitting .234. However his power and k-rate is pretty good for a 19 year old (20 in a couple weeks) in full season.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 After Ortiz left the Red Sox offense completely collapsed. They were terrible in 2017 and were so desperate they signed an extremely risky player with no defensive value in J.D. Martinez. Sure the offense is a bit better this year, but they wasted 100 million on a DH to compensate for their other weaknesses. Betts and Benintendi are good players, but playing over their heads right now. When everyone regresses to their career rates, the offense won't be that good. There's no arguing with that, it's simple facts and numbers. It's partially true--especially with JD Martinez, Mitch Moreland, Brock Holt and Mookie Betts--both have BABIPs at fairly high levels, and are due for regression. Yankees on the other hand, are actually underperforming offensively despite their strong record.. outside of Judge and Stanton, the team has a number of regulars with <.300 BABIP.. so that team could be even more dangerous when healthy and performing, and a strong bet to have a deeper playoff run than the Red Sox, who basically are depending on their pitching and Kimbrel--while they are a strong bet to play in October, whether they get past the Wild Card game if the Yankees overtake them is another question, or past the ALDS--as it stands, the chances of a Yankees/Red Sox ALDS is very high with the Yanks and Red Sox neck and neck in the AL East and a commanding lead in the wild card.

In this case he's right though...the Red Sox system is pretty bad right now It definitely is. SoxProspects shows a system of little upside in their prospects--nobody outside of Jay Groome (who is hurt and just had TJS) projects as a bonafide regular. Pitching especially is ghastly awful..Houck, Mata, Schreff, and Hernandez are struggling badly in A+ ball, and Michael Chavis, their top infield prosepct, is suspended (PEDs).
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 If their postseason run falls short again, how long will they continue paying into luxury tax?
jb22 Verified Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 If their postseason run falls short again, how long will they continue paying into luxury tax? Probably forever.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Probably forever. This, as long as Henry owns the team.
polar bear Verified Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 I hate that we strengthened the Red Sox No worry,Steve will probably be injured in the next couple of weeks.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 No worry,Steve will probably be injured in the next couple of weeks. Watch him hit 3 homeruns this weekend against the Yankees and finish the year with 15-20 homeruns because that's what I'm expecting.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 This is basically how we become good. Shatkins spams trades we can only win and never lose until one of them becomes Jose Ramirez. Could take 10 years but it'll eventually happen. We need about 3 Jose Ramirezes to compete with Boston and NY
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 We need about 3 Jose Ramirezes to compete with Boston and NY One is named Vlad Guerrero Jr. and one is named Bo Bichette.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 One is named Vlad Guerrero Jr. and one is named Bo Bichette. And Biggio, Smith and Groshans look quite devent as well.
