Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 I was going more for age and the bat, but playing a passable shortstop will certainly make him more useful. I just can't get myself too excited about him. Yeah he's pretty old. They need to move him up and we'll see how he responds.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 I wanna know how much cash we are kicking in on this? But either way I'll take a utility infielder for Pearce. I assume it’s to cover the rest of Pearce’s contract. @ 3 mill?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Nobody is getting excited, Grant. The guy is just a lottery ticket, probably won't make Jays top 30 prospects list
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Pearce has now played for all 5 AL East teams. That's pretty interesting.
Key22 Verified Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Pearce is a good pick-up for Boston - mashes lefties - can be a good bench bat and back-up multiple positions in case of injury. Jays losing him at end of year anyway. And it illustrates that trading within division is going to happen if the player coming back is desirable. So now the clock ticks on Happ Estrada Oh Loup Tepera Pillar Smoak Donaldson Maile Stroman Sanchez Travis Step right up for the season summer sale where we can offer you a two for one discount - all must go. Look through our rubbish bin and maybe find something not tooo old and damaged.
4thOFan Verified Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Grant told me the Red Sox offense would be done once Ortiz retires. Good times.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 I don't think this is a trade they needed to make now. Could have made it at the deadline if all we got is a fringe prospect and ate Pearce's salary.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Pearce will probably be hurt by then. With our luck he will mash with the Red Sox and he is the perfect platoon bat with Moreland.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Grant told me the Red Sox offense would be done once Ortiz retires. Good times. They had the 22nd best wRC+ and 28th ISO after he retired. Looks like I nailed it.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 With our luck he will mash with the Red Sox and he is the perfect platoon bat with Moreland. I think Pearce will mash in Boston if he stays healthy but at this point does it really matter? If this was the best the Jays could do, then take it. Shatkins has shown they are willing to eat up money if it improves what they get back, so either the offers for Pearce besides this were s*** or they think highly of Espinal.
King Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Author Posted June 29, 2018 Laughed out loud. There is no technicality. I made a correct statement and backed it up with irrefutable statistics from fangraphs. That's the end of it. If you want to continue to make false quotes and infer things that aren't there then so be it. That's what you guys do because you aren't intelligent enough to have a rational discussion. Goodnight.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 I assume it’s to cover the rest of Pearce’s contract. @ 3 mill? Jays should be able to eat money on all the players they are trading. Since Rogers sets the budget for the upcoming year you may as well take advantage of that because there is no guarantee they money saved will go back into the team next year.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Well at least they got someone who has a non-zero chance to be actually useful.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 (edited) Pearce will probably be hurt by then. I wouldn’t be surprised if he hits the DL again before september. But he does look like a decent fit for Boston if healthy. Nobody is getting excited, Grant. The guy is just a lottery ticket, probably won't make Jays top 30 prospects list There’s only one guy in Dunedin with an OPS above .800, Kevin Smith. And two guys OPS above .800 with at least 200 PA in Lansing, Ryan Noda and Brock Lundquist. Chavez Young is borderline so you can count him too. If Santiago Espinal is slotted somewhere around the same area, he would be between mid to late top 30 guy with room to move up depending on how he finishes the year. This is similar to Jay’s acquiring Samad Taylor or Eduard Pinto, a small chance to be something, if not it’s no big loss. Edited June 29, 2018 by BlueRocky
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 The main thing I’ll remember from his time here is Pearce crying on the bench because he was so bad when we first acquired him:
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 From a BA article about Red Sox system from last week. BIGGEST LEAP FORWARD While shortstop Santiago Espinal showed good bat-to-ball skills at low Class A Greenville in 2017, he showed little pop. But improved fluidity in his hands this year along with better pitch selection and recognition of counts in which he can drive the ball have allowed him to perform at a different level in the first half of 2018 for high Class A Salem. Through 59 games, Espinal hit .315/.367/.491 line with more home runs (seven) and nearly as many extra-base hits (24) as he had all last year. While his arm looks like it will play best at second base, he also looks competent on the left side of the infield, with the potential to emerge as a doubles hitter who can hit for average with good on-base skills. "He’s impacting the ball better than he has in the past. I think he’s become an even more confident defender,” farm director Ben Crockett said. "It’s very real improvement.”
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 I think we all know it's the latter. The Red Sox have been a disgustingly bad offensive for a decade now and nothing has changed. After Ortiz left the Red Sox offense completely collapsed. They were terrible in 2017 and were so desperate they signed an extremely risky player with no defensive value in J.D. Martinez. Sure the offense is a bit better this year, but they wasted 100 million on a DH to compensate for their other weaknesses. Betts and Benintendi are good players, but playing over their heads right now. When everyone regresses to their career rates, the offense won't be that good. There's no arguing with that, it's simple facts and numbers.
sdyment Verified Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 He will 100% be on the Jays top 30 We may be acquiring 30+ prospects by July 31st, so that may not hold

I just can't get myself too excited about him. That's reasonable enough. However he's also has a lot less games played then Ramirez... meaning there is less certainty about what he is. After a good start to his career Ramirez has stalled in aa for 3 years.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 We may be acquiring 30+ prospects by July 31st, so that may not hold Espinal would be like 5th or 6th in the MIF prospect depth chart right now. Biggio, Bichette, Smith, Warmoth, Vicuna, Gurriel, who else? would be ahead of him considering his age and level. Back end of top 30 maybe. Time for board prospect ranking exercise?
