However, our blue jays have alway been a team that looks at it as lost money to DFA a guy they still owe money. I am on board with this. The team would be further ahead by cutting him, eating the money and going with other options already on the team. I know it sucks eating cash, but it's better to pay him not to play for us so the spot may actually return positive wins to the team. Paying for negative wins is the only result we're going to see with Morales still in the lineup.

I suspect this is the move. But there's no need to DFA Morales today. If Smoak blows out his knee tomorrow or JD has a setback and requires season ending surgery, then we'll probably need Morales (although if a or b happen, we're probably f***ed either way).

Don't forget, when we DFA him, there will be absolutely no trade suitors and no one would even consider taking on his contract, so we will be able to outright him to AAA. He's not going to retire and walk away from that money, so we will be able to keep him in the organization in case Smoak or Pearce gets hurt. As soon as Donaldson is healthy enough to DH for the Jays, Morales needs to go.

It's just a depth thing. People are calling for Grichuk to be DFA'd too - but injuries happen and you need to be prepared.

 

As the Dr. says though, if nobody is going to take Morales's contract, then he probably remains a depth piece in AAA.

To be honest, I'd rather he just be released. I want Barnes/McGuire/Alford/Pompey/Travis to keep getting AB's in AAA, and Morales will just cause the same issues for roster flexibility in Buffalo that he does here. The best scenario would be some sort of phantom DL stay where he works on his hitting and then possibly comes back with some gusto. I'd be low-key putting him on the juice and hope that he goes full Collabello (either hits well or gets suspended).

Because to most of the fanbase trading him to free up flexibility on the roster sounds better than releasing him. The optics are better.

There seems to be this concept in baseball that any player over 33 that has a bad month is useless garbage.

Morales could easily turn things around. And if he does, the Jays are going to look awfully stupid having handed Boston an $11 MM/year player for $500k.

 

You guys can talk about negative WAR all day long, but if we're talking about a firstbaseman, we still need to replace his .250/.308/.445 line.

They really need to beg Rogers to allow them to dump this contract? Give a two page power point presentation over how much money they saved on Bautista by avoiding giving into his demands or how much excess value the Smoak contract has provided.

Exactly. If we are talking about optics/fan opinion, it would be far worse to demote Teo at this point than to release Morales. It's also just worse for our on-field competitiveness and player dev.

I hope that you're right. If Morales was just like any other bad FA signing that didn't work out, then it shouldn't be too hard for the FO to move on from him. But I don't think that this case will be 100% about the metrics. Because of their haste to sign Morales to replace Edwin, i'm guessing they'll carry the deadwood for as long as they possibly can.
