Part of the reason to have him play 3B might have just been the easy public relations excuse for not calling him up at a suboptimal time. Hard to say he’s working on his D if he’s playing 1B/DH.

Best case scenario Vlad is probably something like Pedro Alvarez on D, so a -7 defender at 3B. That’s about an extra half win vs him playing 1B, full win vs him at DH.

Because he’d be more valuable if he can play 3B while he’s still young. If he’s called up now he’s a DH only this season.

If the front office thought he couldn’t stick at 3B they’d want to start playing him at 1B in the minors first surely?

I just disagree with this Peter Principle approach to the defensive spectrum. Why force the issue when you're crossing your fingers that you get 2-3 seasons of not too far below average 3B play before he gets too fat to fake it anymore? Just make him a 1B, where he might actually be average (or better), and might actually have a long-term future, and go find a 3B who can play the position at an above-average level. The market for 3B right now is dead anyway.

Well the obvious response is that the front office must believe he can play 3B until his mid to late 20’s. I agree that if the plan was only for a couple of years it wouldn’t be worth it.

Just out of curiosity, how many years of projected 3B ability would make you start to change your stance on that issue?

It depends on how bad he is. If he's like a -10 3B defender, just go get an actual 3B and get Vlad's bat into the lineup in a spot where he's not going to hurt you defensively. Unless 3B supply shrinks a lot in the near future, I don't see any reason to use a bad defender there just because it's higher on the defensive spectrum.

Last offseason, legit 3B were not even more expensive than similarly skilled 1B like Alonso and LoMo.

Vlad is going to get max time at third because I think the plan has been, for a while now, that JD will get traded at the deadline and for sure not re-signed. The optics look so much better for Shatkins in saying, "Yes, we couldn't come to an agreement with JD but Vlad is ready to go at third base."

Makes sense to me at least.....I think.

Can they not work on his defense while also DHing 3-4 games per week? I understand they aren't game reps but you develop footwork by practicing as well as first stepquickness etc..

He can take ground balls for an hour and a half every day. Better nutrition in the Big Leagues too with a team chef.

I find the most interesting part of the Jays season currently, is watching how bad Morales is, and wondering how bad he needs to be to be dropped. I check his box score stats every morning just to see how bad he is getting.

I think he gets cut once he bottoms out below .100.

That won't happen for quite a while - he'd have to go 0 for 45 to get below .100, or adding on 10 more at hitless bats per hit he manages to get.

So, 14-15 more games. I don't see him getting another hit.

Haha, you may be right! FWIW he's averaging a hit every 3 games (he's hit in 10 of his 30 games), he's hitting .333 in a way!

the Mendoza line is .200, and so Kendrys' legacy as a Blue Jay will be the Morales line of .100
