Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 Is Jon Harris getting his s*** together finally? Cavan stays hot....
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 And Vlad's K rate continues to go down, now at 7.5%. You would think AA would start adjusting to him but if anything it seems to be the opposite. For reference, Mike Trout was 18.4% at the same age in AA. It's crazy that someone with such a nasty hack can maintain such an incredibly low K rate.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 Is Jon Harris getting his s*** together finally? Probably not? Unless by "getting his s*** together" you mean, "limping to the Majors as a very boring back-end starter without any exciting pitches or traits". Which, of course, would be a perfectly fine outcome for a 29th overall selection.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2018 Author Posted April 23, 2018 Interesting note (to me anyways) Lansing is leading the MWL in steals with 31 and Ryan Noda is tied for the team lead in steals with 7 - Reggie Pruitt also has 7. Neither have been caught yet. I wouldn't have expected a 1b/OF guy to be a base stealer.

It's crazy that someone with such a nasty hack can maintain such an incredibly low K rate. He's really got the whole package. He gets himself into good counts and pitchers are too afraid to come into the zone. When he does get into a pitchers count, he shortens up his swing a bit and fouls off all of the good pitches. Even when he does swing at a bad pitch, he usually hits it anyways. That's got to be a nightmare for pitchers.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 Has anyone personally seen Lansing this year? I'd be interested in any stuff reports or insights on Donnie Sellers, Zach Logue, MAXIMO! Castillo, Tice. And Samad Taylor. Sellers is my personal sleeper prospect. Wondering if his velocity is trending up at all.

Stoneyen Verified Member Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 Speaking of SB, I see Bo’s got 6 already this year. Could he be a 20 steal guy in the majors?
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 At the rate Vlad Jr. is going--it's more a matter of when, not if, he reaches the majors this year--he's on the same path Rafael Devers was on last year, tearing up AA and may be too advanced for AAA.

True, which is why it's interesting. Pruitt I can understand given that he's a CF/speed guy. Not sure if Noda is getting them all on the backend of double-steals, or if the pitching batteries in the MWL are just awful at holding runners. His walk rate is 37%, but his ISO is .083....that's retarded. Not sure what all these pitchers are afraid of

Pitchers in A ball are awful at throwing strikes consistently. 3. Don't use the R word. It's not 2006.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2018 Author Posted April 23, 2018 1. Noda's old (for the level) and an advanced hitter. 2. So are pitchers in the lower level league he was in last year, yet his walk rate has almost doubled. 3. You're retarded. 4. I'm not saying he's a prospect, just that his numbers are interesting.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 Jansen is looking good. If we have an injury at C we won't lose much and might actually improve. Pompey looks solid too. If he can keep this up he could make for an okay trade piece at the deadline. Or Pillar could be traded too. It's so nice to have depth. I can't even remember the last time the Jays had a deep team from MLB down to the minor leagues.

Devers made the most seamless transition to the big leagues ever. He just slid and no problem and was an above average regular. I hope its that easy for Vlad.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 on the flip side, McGuire's off to a horrendous start. As is Tellez. Not big deals IMO. I gave up on Tellez a long time ago. Only 22 PAs for McGuire but he was definitely a notch below Jansen on the pecking chart anyway.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 I'm actually kind of intrigued by Ryan Noda. Obviously you love the walks and base running but he is already use to playing 3 positions and well. And there is some raw power to come that hasn't been displayed in games yet. Another guy that I'm keeping my eye on that never get mentioned because hes a reliever is Zach Jackson. Only 23 in Double-A striking out guys at a higher rate as he climbs the system. Some command issues at times but hes throwing mid 90's fastballs touching 97. He's only allowed 2 homeruns in pro ball career. Both at Lansing no homeruns allowed at High A, and AA so far. From a bio last year: Jackson's best pitch is a hammer three-quarters breaking ball with curveball break and slider velocity in the low 90s. He usually operates at 93-95 mph with his fastball and can hit 97, though it can get straight at times. Jackson doesn't need a changeup much as a reliever, but he has shown some aptitude for throwing one.

I'd kind of forgotten about him to be honest.

John - I love the MiLB updates, so I won't ever chirp you again. Feel free to chirp, as long as you're willing to receive it back As for average age baseball-reference.com has an entire section for all of the minor league levels. You can see the Ave gargle age of hitters and pitchers in every league every year. Technically, Noda is older than league average but by a few months, so it's not crazy. He's too old at that level to be considered a prospect though. 20 is about the max age I'll ever look at for Low A ball, but 19 or younger are the truly legit guys.

If it does we have something.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 Biggio 2-5 with a home run tonight. Is he a prospect? I thought the promotion to AA was aggressive given the type of season he had last year (nothing special) but he's killing the ball right now.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 How did Rowdy Tellez get so bad? His situation is a tough one to evaluate and he should be given some leeway imo. First of all, yes he wasn't viewed highly by scouts and all that crap, that should be taken into consideration strongly, perhaps he simply doesn't have the batspeed and the tools to succeed at the higher levels. But the stuff with his mom must have made it brutal for him, there's no way he's been right mentally or emotionally for a while now, and that as much as physical tools can make a gigantic impact on performance. He may never pan out, but the way I see it he's probably basically playing injured and lost a lot of development as a result.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
