Maahfaace Verified Member Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 His situation is a tough one to evaluate and he should be given some leeway imo. First of all, yes he wasn't viewed highly by scouts and all that crap, that should be taken into consideration strongly, perhaps he simply doesn't have the batspeed and the tools to succeed at the higher levels. But the stuff with his mom must have made it brutal for him, there's no way he's been right mentally or emotionally for a while now, and that as much as physical tools can make a gigantic impact on performance. He may never pan out, but the way I see it he's probably basically playing injured and lost a lot of development as a result. If thats the reason for his struggles he needs to suck it up, just about everyone deals with s*** in their lives.

Last year his mother spent the entire summer in the hospital with Stage 4 melanoma. Reports from February 2018 suggested she was doing well and starting to recover; however, Tellez left spring training on March 1st to be with her again, as she was in poor health. I just searched, but that's the last real update I could find. He needs to suck that up because everyone deals with s*** equivalent to that? C'mon man.

I went through the exact same thing and everyone deals with it differently. That's a life shattering event for a young man. I had the luxury of going through the motions at my job, but I can sympathize with how difficult this must be for him.

I know the details, but one of two things are happening here. Either people on here like him alot as a prospect and are using this unfortunate circumstance as a excuse to explain that he just isn't that good, or this actually did derail his entire season and possibly his career, in which case the kid is weak mentally and probably would of washed out anyways from some other unfortunate incident. And yes, a lot of people/players go through family health situations/tragedies in their lives, cancer has decimated large portions of my family but I didn't let it affect my life or job performance for an entire year. The sports landscape is littered with stories like this (see Freddie Freeman), who have persevered through really tough situations. Using it as an excuse for not succeeding, which I'm not sure he has said but the media definitely has for him, is a narrative that is ridiculously overplayed and seems to have grown exponentially with this generation. Too many kids have been raised to be sympathy whores in the last 25 years and to play the victim card when s*** doesn't go their way. So ya, suck it up buttercup.

If you or anyone else in the real world put in 80% at work because you're having a tough time in your personal life, it's unlikely anyone would take much notice if it's recognised at all. A professional sportsman being less than 100% for whatever reason is going to be noticed and effect their prospects in a big way. Comparing consequences for sportsmen to real world jobs is stupid and irrelevant. The guy is a young man who has been facing losing his mother for over a year. Yes everyone reacts differently (some will use work as an escape for example), but saying "suck it up" or dismissing him as not mentally tough enough for professional sport is both naive and erroneous.
