I'd rather the gamble on getting a better return, how much lower can his value drop?

I'm sure Shatkins will make the right choice, he did put their names out there.

Yeah exactly. Worst case for not trading Sanchez - he continues to get injured, or sucks, turn him into a reliever and trade him next year.

Interesting. I wish we could poach that pitching coach instead.

That first response is horseshit. Say what you want about Stroman, but he's an excellent team-mate.

If we trade Stroman or Sanchez it would be a good signing

Would be a good signing either way. Exactly the type of FA the Jays should go after.

Why does it matter if we trade them or not to evaluate this signing? You can never have enough pitching, at the projected price tag it could be a good signing regardless.

It would be a fantastic signing, exactly what we need but i doubt we will be given serious consideration. It's already rumored the Giants are the favorites.

Why the hell would he go to the Giants? The Giants suck and San Fran is a shithole.

No clue man, that's what I've read on twitter. We are exactly as bad as the Giants and probably going to be in the same boat again next year.

San Fran is a beautiful city. Probably one of America's top 5 and one of the most frequented by Japanese tourists. They have a J-Town district and several Japanese festivals. They are always in play when Japanese players choose.

I don't get the desire to trade Sanchez now. He's not going to net anything other than depth piece type of prospects, which the front office has demonstrated an ability to hoard. The team doesn't really need more of those types of players. It could always use more high-ceiling guys which Sanchez might be able to net upon a strong couple of months. It's worth the gamble to keep him.

Of course if Sanchez outperforms, that just increases the chances of this gosh-darned team actually performing well enough to try to compete in 2019, much to the chagrin of all the tankmeisters on this board who want everyone traded for prospects. What an unfortunate conundrum.

Like much of California, San Fran is a city of haves and have-nots. If you're pulling in millions a year it's probably a great place to be.

I'm very disappointed that after 3 years of Trudeau and 2 years of Trump that not even one athlete in the MLB or NBA has been soyboy enough to make Toronto their home. It's as if all the people "threatening" to move to Canada are all useless plebs who just want to leech off our social safety net. Dammit.

Which athletes threatened to do this?

For me, I would only trade Sanchez or Stro' if we received a top AAA starter who could possibly be very good, #2-3 in a rotation, plus some low level kids.

But if we hold on to both, to start the season, and it's late June and both are pitching like they can, I think we get a lot more. I think even if only one of the two pitches really well (say Stroman), the prospect haul for just a good Stroman would be more than trading both of those guys away now.

Players like Pillar and Morales are the opposite. They have almost no chance to enhance their value after a couple month of play. They are in decline.

Generally agree. But it works both ways, the prospects that Shatkins is targetting today in return for stro or sanchez may no longer be available at the deadline if they perform well the first half.

Agree.

I was thinking about this a lot.

I think we should trade all our legacy players now. Smoak's value has a more of probability of going lower then higher. Same with Pillar IMO.

Sanchez and Stroman still have upside in many minds. Another injury plagued or poor performance like last year and we wont get crap.

I want to get rid of Martin and Morales just because I think they are a waste of roster space and blocking young guys.

Travis will get hurt again or suck on either D or at the plate or both, cut bait now.

Target pitching and pitching.. Use the same strategy for relievers at the deadline. Let the kids play!

That is true. And why being a GM must be an incredibly hard job. I guess, the smart play may be to trade one of those guys now, if the package was pretty decent and included a prospect strongly liked by the org, and hold onto the other guy and hope for bounce back and a better trade before the deadline.

12:03 Hi Dan, what do Kevin Pillar and Justin Smoak bring back to the Jays (esp if they go to the Giant and Rockies)? Thanks!

Dan Szymborski

12:04 You'll get a couple of real prospects for the pair. There's some value there.

I can't imagine this being true, but Rockies jokes aside they seem like one of the last remaining orgs that has no idea how to properly evaluate talent.

That likely changes with Farhan Zaidi now at the GM helm.

Zaidi is the GM of the Rox?

I misinterpreted the post. Thought he was referring to the Giants since, you know, they were both mentioned in the post that was quoted.

I hope this is the calm before the storm and we will get some Jays news. Since Thursday it has been DEAD.. Not even any new rumors or updated content on MLB.com.

This is like watching paint dry..

Well, it's the off-season, not a trade deadline... groundwork's set I'm sure, and now it's who blinks first. Jays news likely won't happen until mid-January, and the action will pale in comparison to the big clubs.

You are likely looking at an organization's top 2 prospect which I don't think Sanchez or Stroman will yield. A potential #2 starter is higher than what either Stro/Sanchez are currently, so I don't see another team giving up that potential. I think Shatkins has to gamble here for a good start with either so I 100% agree with you, we can't trade them now. I know holding onto JD was a gamble that didn't work, but neither are a FA at the end of the year and I think there's a higher likelihood Stroman improves, I mean, compared to last year he has to!
