SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 Catchers generally make the best managers, don't they. Man, it's clear you need to be a smart guy to be a great catcher. Preparation, matchups, etc. It's like playing chess. I never really regarded Martin as a potential manager, but really, he checks a lot of boxes just given the fact that he has been a really good catcher for so long. And yes, I understand the Martin managing Sunday thing doesn't necessarily mean he is being considered. But I find it really interesting.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 Leave it to Gibby to take 'er easy on his last day on the job like he's some customer service rep who's given his 2 weeks notice. I f***in' love that man.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 I love that. I'd love to see Martin be the next manager, but I think he still wants to play a few years. I wonder what it would cost us to acquire Kevin Cash? Probably be easier to snag Jared Sandberg, back to back championships with Durham. https://www.milb.com/milb/news/durham-bulls-manager-jared-sandberg-leads-succeeds-with-a-smile/c-295065304
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 When do we discuss putting Gibby on the Level of Excellence (and retiring the number 5...)?

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 For?? Two ALCS appearances?? For being the greatest manager in team history?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 When do we discuss putting Gibby on the Level of Excellence (and retiring the number 5...)? Hell yeah they should
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 Just wait until next year when we have a new manager. Everyone will miss Gibby. The guy rarely f***s up and he's got a great and entertaining personality on top of it.

He does a fantastic job of managing the players and personalities (and media), not so much in terms of in-game decisions imo.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 When do we discuss putting Gibby on the Level of Excellence (and retiring the number 5...)? Retiring his number is a bit far but he definitely deserves the level of excellence I think.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 So we slip out of the Top 10 thanks to AA.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 No, we pick 11th because Atlanta gets a comp pick for not signing Carter Stewart. Lol AA. f***ing guy. Didn't this ******** result in us not signing Singer and Nola?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Lol AA. f***ing guy. Didn't this ******** result in us not signing Singer and Nola? I don't think I will ever understand why AA drafts players he doesn't think he can sign. I have never been worried about the Jays signing a draft pick since Shatkins took over, but with AA, you never knew. On the plus side, we will get to hear how great AA is over the next few days as he single handedly brought Atlanta back to the playoffs. Not like he inherited 98% of the team or anything, it was all him. /sportsnet.ca.

Creates a good team through unsustainable trades and signings and jumps ship before s*** hits the fan to inherit another team in a better position.
metafour Verified Member Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Lol AA. f***ing guy. Didn't this ******** result in us not signing Singer and Nola? Nola was a late round guy and was a complete shot in the dark anyway, that one doesn't really count. We drafted his brother too and tried to swing a package deal, it didn't work. Singer was a fail as that pick turned into Woodman, and Singer ended up being a 1st round guy that could have been in the rotation next season.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Retiring his number is a bit far but he definitely deserves the level of excellence I think. Retire his number and build a statue.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 So is someone going to start an offseason thread now or do we wait until the World Series is over? I don't recall the etiquette on this. I personally can't wait to see everyone's rotation and line-up projections after about half a dozen fantasy FA signings and trades.

It's annoying that AA will get credit for the Braves success this year when he had nothing to do with it. Off the top of my head, the only pieces of consequence he added were Culberson, Gausman, and Anibal Sanchez, who played well, and McCarthy, Moylan, and Duvall, who were s***. Dude waited for the perfect time to bail here before s*** got bad, then the perfect time to waltz in and take the job in Atlanta as things were getting good.
Ray Verified Member Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Russell Martin to the Astros a fit? McCann's option probably isn't gonna be picked up, Maldanado is a free agent, and Stassi is a backup. Not catching prospects coming up the pipeline. Plus with all the young pitching they have coming up, they're gonna need a good framer and game caller.

I think AA made a bunch of mistakes. His record overall is definitely mixed, but he wasn't turning a fringe team into a team sneaking into the playoffs. 2015 I think we were undoubtedly the best team in baseball and there's some credit due for that. Atlanta he has obviously just inherited at this point. It'll take a few years to see if he makes the same mistakes.
