Hindsight is 20/20. He's probably thinking he should have resigned with whatever number Shatkins gave him before the season. And I doubt the offers were that high for him anyway. Moose was coming off a 38 homer season and signed for 6.5 mil. Not sure why a team would give up a lot for a 22 million dollar season from Donaldson.

Moose was a 2 win player with those 38 homers. Donaldson was second only to a guy named trout in WAR the last 5 years. That comment is ridiculous. Donaldson gambled, the Jays gambled....both lost. The Jays won't be able to trade him for much and Donaldson's free agent dollar value has plummeted. He likely would have got more from an extension with Shatkins prior to the season. That said, we traded Roy Halladay and basically got nothing, so prospects are a gamble too.

The best move might be gambling again and signing Donaldson to an extension at a much reduced rate. I wouldn't be surprised if JD signed a one year deal in the offseason.

The QO makes a lot of sense for both sides. It gets compensation off the table for Donaldson heading into free agency in 2020 while letting him rebuild value, and it gets us another year of an elite player without a long commitment.

I feel you but I think you might be in agreement with me I just didn't make my point very well. 38 homer guys or 2 win players (however you want to define him) were basically going for free. It's hard to justify giving up a bunch of s*** AND paying a guy 22 million when you can have 2 WAR players for free. We might as well have kept JD because the packages in a market like that probably weren't all that great. I'm not even sure we gambled tbh, because the package we are missing out on might be pretty lame.

yeah...I can see donaldson taking the QO.

Wait, we were going to get Flaherty for Donaldson?

The Cardinals GM went out of his way to say he did not want to trade six years of value for a rental. I highly doubt that was happening. We probably could have gotten what the Marlins got for Ozuna, which frankly wasn't great, but Ozuna came with an extra year so who knows.

Don't know if JD would take the QO, but signing him to an expensive one year deal with some s***** options like we did Bautista is probably realistic if he doesn't go h.a.m. in August and September.

It makes more sense for JD to take the QO than sign a one year deal at a similar price, because that gets it off the table in the future.

I feel like FO are pretty smart now so a year from now Donaldson will just be another year older and that much more in decline. He might be better off to just take the most years and $ he can get this offseason.

Unless I'm mistaken, a team is only allowed to offer the QO once. The player doesn't have to accept it. So even if JD declines it and signs a one year deal, the Jays can't offer it to him again.

Yeah, this is really the best option. Then, if he stays healthy in 2019 he can be traded for a decent prospect haul and we get 3-4 WAR until then. And, the FO can justify keeping Vlad down a little longer with JD blocking him.

Best case of a worst case scenario.

Should have f***ing traded him in the off season.

I’d point out that Manny Machado was shopped in the off season but wasn’t traded, in part because there wasn’t any decent offers made.

Just because we didn’t shop JD doesn’t mean we didn’t get at least calls/winter meeting discussions. I believe Shatkins would have traded JD if they thought a good offer was on the table. If the only offers were going to be rubbish, then it was worth the risk of keeping him IMO. If he’d had an elite year we’d get a better return, if he’s injured, good chance of a QO being accepted.

This is great news, according to the "Positive Pete's" on this board, "re-evaluation" is a good thing and shouldn't raise any flags or concern.

Vlad Guererro re-evaluation July 8th - "Vlad is on the plane to New Hamphsire, after the future's game he will be sent to Buffalo and you all see him in Toronto on April 11th 2019"

Josh Donaldson re-evaluation July 17th - "Josh is heading to Buffalo to do a rehab assignment with Vlad. It's a good chance for them to meet up, because we will resign Josh and him and Vlad will be the leaders next year as they both fight for the MVP"

(Your boss tells you, you will be re-evaluated in 3 weeks) - Honey great news I'm going to be re-evaluated.

Honey - "Awesome let's put in a pool."

(Your Girlfriend tells you, you will be re-evaluated) - Wow. She must really love me, I'm going to buy a ring.

Board Hive Mind - 'A mean man said re-evaluation is a bad thing. Little Vladdy doesn't have a time table, they don't give any details on his injury, but he's headed for re-evaluation. We all know there is nothing to worry about. They didn't give us a timetable because everything is OK. He is due back 1 hour after his re-evalatuion'

Olerud363 - "Umm... dudes... normal injuries have a time table and details... think about it. Doesn't this "re-evaluation" thing bother you?? in the least??"

Donald Trump (early 2017) - We are going to re-evaluate our commitment to the Paris Climate Accord.

Environmentalist - The Donald made a surprising announcement. He is re-evaluating the accord. No details or a timetable, but re-evaluation can only be a good thing. The environment is saved. Everything is good. Donald will probably announce greater support for the Climate Accord and Carbon reduction. I love re-evaluation so much. It is only good news.

Olerud363 - Thank god. Re-evaluation. I'm going to be re-evaluated. I won't be the most annoying poster. When my re-evaluation comes in 7 weeks the news will only be good. I marked it on my Calendar. August 15th. The day of my vindication. The day everything will be OK. The day the results of my re-evaluation will be announced, and it will only be good news. I am not annoying after all. My family was wrong when they told me this.

I'm not arguing over semantics. I'm not puffing out my chest. I'm not trying to pretend I'm all that smart. I just don't think anyone is understanding the serious of this injury.

I just think it's hilarious, how you all think this is just "Vlad out four weeks with jammed thumb".

Normal injury in which guy comes back and everything is OK

"The MRI revealed a sprain in the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) of Grichuk's knee and he is expected to miss the next three weeks."

No talk of re-evaluation. Even after Donaldson's original calf strain he didn't immediately get sent for re-evaluation. He didn't reach the re-evaluation stage until struggling with it for a month.

Keep calm... we'll see when he's evaluated, simple.

In this debate someone brought up Mike Trout. Mike Trout plays 158 games a year, other than the time he jammed his thumb. Immediately after jamming his thumb surgery was performed and a complete time table was released, and he came back within the time table, and never came near the "re-evaluation" stage.

We'll see what happens. I suspect "Vlad re-evaluation day", July 8th, will pass without news. During the all star break and futures game people will start wondering what the heck is going on. There won't really be any news, other than he is working with trainers. Mid August it will be apparent he isn't playing another game this year. He will have surgery and be back May 2019. He won't be the same.

OK. That's a bad news case. Hopefully I'm wrong. I'll be happy if I'm wrong and proven an idiot. I will admit it, and enjoy Vlad coming back early July and marching on to finish 2018 strong and start his Hall of Fame career with an ROY season in 2019.

Donaldson might not even be looking at 3/75 at this point. I see him taking the Qualifying offer

He should be able to get at least $20-$25 Million on a 1 year deal if he went that route. Teams are scared off by the age and hesitant to give him term but getting a 4-5 Win player for 1 year is a bargain.

You also have to factor in the draft pick they would lose though

I don't know if they will sacrifice the 1st rounder
