Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2018 Posted May 27, 2018 Grichuk went 1-3 today with a walk in NH, as the DH.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-astros-staff-is-the-best-ever/ Really excellent article. Really makes you wonder why so many of our pitchers are still pitching to contact.. I wonder what the Astros system could do for Stroman?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 Russ Martin is starting in LF today? He's hitting .165 and we're finding creative ways to get him in the lineup? WTF? It's like he's some circus act now or some s***.

He has a .192 BABIP, he may not be Aaron Judge out there but his batting line should be a lot better, he's walking a ton and the power hasn't disappeared or anything.

WryNGinger Verified Member Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 I don't get it. Why not put DSJ or Granderson out there? Seems like an increased chance of injury for Martin when he is bouncing all over the diamond.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 I think they want him hurt, so they can put him on the 60 day DL and use his roster for spot for someone who can hit over the Mendoza line. Or that is what I am hoping anyway..

He's been Ryan Goins with the bat this year. He's a 35 year old catcher who's a league average bat at best - and it's not as if he's crushing LHP either. You don't get creative to get him in the lineup - period...

Of course he has a 73 wRC+, his f***ing BABIP is below the Mendoza line. Martin and Ryan Goins have the same career BABIP (.283), I think it says a lot that while running into the worst luck in the league he's still serviceable.

I never thought that Martin would be the utility guy! As much as I would love to see Jansen he shouldn't be up until September so we don't start his clock. Maile is far from useless so no real pressure to add him despite Jansen being way to good for AAA.

I do like Jansen a lot, but he's not the type of prospect where I would stunt his development because of service time concerns. He is ready to play in the big leagues right now.

I wouldn't stress lad, the Jays aren't, I'm sure they know more than forum posters. I've agreed all along.

Why does everyone miss this point?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 The front office might be trying to time it so all the prospects come up around the same time (mid 2019?). It's not like there are open spots. JD/Solarte have 3B, Morales has DH (ugh), Martin has catcher, etc. I don't think this front office is in any rush to promote prospects.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 You call him up in September, you start his service time... IE: Clock! Why does everyone miss this point? I dunno. But realistically once the super 2 window passes, calling him up then vs September makes no difference to years of control. I'd love to see Jansen, Borucki and Vlad sooner rather than later.

You don't lose a year as folk seem to think, unless we keep em back back til late/mid April '19

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 You call him up in September, you start his service time... IE: Clock! Why does everyone miss this point? It's not just about service time. We aren't going to carry 3 catchers. Martin is still the teams primary catcher and hes signed through next year. No need to rush Jansen onto the roster before September.

He's a 23 year old catcher in his second season at AAA with more walks than strikeouts and a 163 wRC+. The defense seems to have plateaued at average this season and he's probably hit his peak in that regard.
