Ross Atkins announces on @FAN590 that Troy Tulowitzki will start the season on the 60-day DL.

No great loss.

I don't hate that lineup. Were it me, I'd probably flip Morales and Grichuk and Pillar and Diaz, but it's not bad.

That's a pretty good lineup. I'd flip Smoak and Granderson. I'd sub Pearce in for Morales as well. That's about it.

I don't mind Morales hitting in front of Grichuk. I actually think it makes the most sense to bat him in front of the most all-or-nothing bat on the team to mitigate his baserunning. Grichuk will hit about 30 homers this year so if Morales is on base for any of them his baserunning won't matter. If Grichuk strikes out or pops up Morales' baserunning isn't going to matter as much either. Then you have Martin who walks a lot and has some pop (both scenarios where Morales' baserunning is mitigated) and puts him one spot further away from Pillar and Diaz, two guys who don't have pop and who put the ball in play a fair amount.

I dont think we can afford having two complete offensive blackholes at 8 and 9. This is a big test for Diaz on whether or not he can hit. If he can recapture some of his 2016 form, we might forget about Tulo really quickly.

Has anyone with the Jays mentioned why Gift was chosen over Espinosa? Was it because Espinosa was signed late and needs to get some more work in before plays? Or did Gift beat him out on merit?

Losing Tulo doesn't seem like a huge blow but he's got to be a 2 WAR player or so if healthy. Gift is a 0. Diaz helps mitigate the loss of Tulo but it means we are carrying a replacement level player to start the year.

Yeah if he stays healthy and productive it will help a ton. If he gets hurt or isn't that good then we are looking at a blackhole at SS which will include a lot of PT for Gift.

Gift is on the 40 man roster and Espinosa has accepted an assignment in Buffalo so they didn't have to clear any further 40 man roster spots and keep the same depth. That's really all I can think of. Wouldn't shock me if Epinosa replaces Gift on the roster soon enough if/when Gift sucks.

Pillar and Diaz are decent enough for 8/9 hitters... far from "black holes". In terms of career OPS they have like 100 points, on Darwin/Goins.

If both could hit at career averages they would be outstanding 8/9 hitters.

Note: Diaz was good in 2016 bad in 2017, if he splits the difference he would be a great asset.

You mean the year he was the 2nd best hitting shortstop in baseball? Yeah - that would be nice.

Can anyone explain to me why the player with the second most AB in camp, who lead in:

HR, RS, RBI, SB, was second in BA and had a 1.000 FA ISN'T ON THE ROSTER?

Here's a simple question: are the Jays better with Pearce on the roster?

Are they better with Granderson?

One more time, our 2 clowns just proved how stupid they are.

Could be a case of manipulating his service time. The #1 prospect in baseball isn't with the big league team after all.

Hey - common sense - get the f*** out of here.

Spring training is basically one step up from batting practice, you shouldn’t pay too much attention to ST stats.

Possibly, especially as he gives us depth at 1B if Smoak turns back into a replacement player.

Are they better with Granderson?

Possibly, though if not he can be moved or DFA - in the meantime his veteran experience could be useful.

The front office has access to detailed analysis and data that we don’t, which may explain some seemingly strange decisions (most of which have worked out so far). They also basically built the successful and promising Cleveland side with a much smaller budget than here.

I would've liked to have seen Teoscar on the team too. He's already proven himself in the minor leagues, what more does the guy have to do in order to get a shot? I suppose the problem is is that the guy needs regular AB's and I guess the Jays brass aren't convinced that he can be productive in a starting role.

By the way, I don't agree with the tone of the thread. I think the new brass have been perfectly sensible in how they've gone about things. But as a fan there's always going to be a thing or 2 that you would've liked to have seen handled differently. It's just the way it goes.
