Looks like a reasonable contract for the Mariners as far as terms go. It's pretty limited risk when you can bail after 3 years.

I thought we would be more aggressive in our pursuit, but the fact that he signed with an embarrassingly bad organization tells me that we didn't put forth a competitive offer.

Boras will chase the money, but it's possible a west coast team who's games may be more easily shown in Japan may offer much more in the way of sponsorship deals. Those could potentially exceed what he's actually making in salary.

He would have gone where the money was, but I think the Jays would have had to blow everyone out the water for him to choose Toronto over a west coast team. We don't have the New York appeal, and this isn't blind bids anymore like what happened with Darvish. Most Japanese players will probably end up on west coast teams if they have any say in the matter.

I'd be interested to know what the Jays offered though.

Those are two very contradictory statements. What did he prioritize, money or location?

The fourth year is a player option so it’s guaranteed as far as the M’s are concerned. They cannot bail after 3.

It’s not contradictory. If some random team (the Jays) killed everyone in the field money wise then he would have probably signed with the Jays. But if offers are generally around the same area, then location is going to heavily factor more than anything else. Boras wouldn’t let a client bail on a significantly better offer, but chances are he didn’t get one.

Your first statement certainly was, but you reworded it now. I'll wait to see how much money it was for, but I feel like we could have and should have made him a better offer.

How can you say that before knowing what dipoto paid?

The Jays might have made a competitive offer but they needed to trump everyone else’s offer to get him, and that clearly did not happen. The Japanese market is always going to be a hard sell for the Jays. They missed their shot with Darvish. The blind bid system was more advantageous to them.

Looks like his deal is basically 14.33M a year for 3 years, 13M for the player option, and 16.5M a year for 4 additional years if the Mariners exercise the extension.

With posting crap factored in, that's 17M per year for 3 years, 15.1M for the player option, and 19M a year for the 4 years.

More stories on Bryce Harper meeting the Phillies again

Honestly how much more would they have to pay to get him to sign there vs LA or STL or WSN.

He grew up across the county. He's played for a division rival for years and probably been booed relentlessly by the s***** ass Phillies fans every at bat every game.

Phillies want to spend money. But how much more would he want to sign there and is he even seriously considering it?

I just can't see it

I don't think he cares.

McNeil could see occasional outfield action and back up at all four infield positions, according to Callaway. That includes shortstop, a position at which the Mets are thin behind Amed Rosario.

Holy f***, lol @ the Mets. Yeah, make your best infielder a bench player because God forbid Todd Frazier isn't playing third.

Let's get Jeff McNeil.

Also, FTR, McNeil has next to no experience playing OF.

Maybe not

Think he just wants to be the highest paid player in the history of sports?

Jays offered a higher AAV (more traditional structure) and I don't know the years. No source you'll just have to take my word on this.

Toronto isn't a sexy destination right now...or usually to be honest. Maybe in a few years.

Money must not have been the deciding point because a more traditional structure would have benefited him.

The deal he agreed to gives the M's the right to undercut his value in 3 years - if he has a top pitcher who could earn more than 4/66 in free agency.

So, he took less guaranteed money AND there is some value downside to his contract from his perspective.

Obviously being on the west coast will always be a big deal for Japanese players

Well there goes my theory that he would have gone where the money was. Looks like location was more important to him, or the money difference wasn't enough to sway his mind.

West Coast teams have a big advantage on Japanese talent.

And conversely, might east coast teams have an advantage on caribbean talent? Certainly the Cubans seem to favour Miami

The Jays have a long history in Latin America, so that's the market they should be fine in.

There is almost no point in scouting Japan if history is any indication, but never hurts to do your homework and give your best offer.

It doesn't make absolute sense though - we've seen Japanese players sign with New York and Boston.

Toronto has a whole lot to offer, even THREE Uncle Tetsu's and a Uniqlo.

New York and Boston are a big deal though. Big markets, spend more than anyone else (on the East coast), and have more history than almost every other franchise.

If Japanese players were signing with the Royals, then I'd agree. But Toronto also has the disadvantage of being in Canada, which could be another stumbling block for players from a perception standpoint.

The Jays had their best shot at signing a Japanese player with Darvish since it was a blind bid. If the player has the option to choose where he goes, then it will always be a huge long shot unless Shatkins is prepared to blow everyone else out the water with their offer.

Toronto is a world class city, please don't compare it to Kansas City. It's better than Boston.

I would have to be convinced that for a Japanese player, coming to Canada rather than the USA would be a negative. I imagine that if Vancouver had an MLB team that would actually be their first choice. Asian people f***ing love Canada.

Obviously, payroll and team history are relevant factors.

Meh - if I was a Blue Jays decision maker I would continue to aggressively pursue these guys. I don't see objective reasons that support a defeatist or non-participation attitude.

Asian investors are eating up massive tracts of land all over Canada. It won't be long until we're the #1 destination for star Japanese players!

While he may have taken less contract value, I believe the marketing deals for Japanese players are a lot higher if it's on the west coast where the games are at a better time for viewing in Japan. This likely more than makes up for the dollar difference. He may also have grown up a Seattle fan watching Ichiro, who knows.

Chinese =/= Japanese.

Japansee people don't have nearly the Asian presence here that Chinese or even Korean people do. I don't think that a Japanese person gives a single f*** that this county has huge amounts of Chinese and Korean people.

To think otherwise is incredibly racist!
