G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2018 Posted December 1, 2018 It's the Wilpons. Pathetic doesn't even begin to describe them. Listening to MLB Network One of the ex GMs had an interesting comment. He had heard that of all the potential GMs the Mets interviewed, BVW was the only one who thought the Mets were potential contenders in 2019. This does not surprise me somehow Nor would it surprise me if his tenure at GM is short and disastrous

It all depends on their health. They need to improve their infield and make significant upgrades to the bullpen. An outfield of Cespedes, Conforto, and Nimmo when healthy can be really solid.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 The Mets-Mariners deal is official. Cano + Edwin Diaz + $20M cash for Jay Bruce + Anthony Swarzak + Jarred Kelenic + Justin Dunn + Gerson Bautista Lol M's

Doesn't seem that bad a deal to me.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 getting out of the 36- 40 years of Cano wasn't an easy task. Doesn't seem that bad a deal to me. They could have gotten way more for Edwin Diaz on his own than Kelenic + Dunn IMO, and some team would have given up something for Cano along with like $50M kicked in. Bruce and Swarzak are sunk costs as well so it's not like they got rid of most of Cano's contract for only the $20M that they gave back. I could see a way where this ends up well for the Mariners since Kelenic and Dunn are interesting but I think they could have done much better than this.

Maybe they rate him very high. It's not inconceivable that Bruce and Swarzak could have decent starts next year and they could get moved at the trade deadline. They didn't kick in 50 mil, they kicked in 20. There's a big difference in that number. You can't expect much back if you're only willing to kick in 20. A couple intriguing prospects and bit more of a long shot prospect. I just don't think the deal was laughably bad.

They essentially kicked in 50 mill since Jay Bruce has $26 million left over two years and he currently projects as barely above replacement level and Swarzak could be alright but he's also a random reliever who could also be a sunk cost at $8M.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 I like the trade for the Mets. When considering the cash and bad contracts, they get Cano at a fairly palatable salary. Kelenic and Dunn seems light for Diaz, considering the recent prices for relievers. I do, however, question the direction in which the Mets are going. I don't think they will be competitive in the NL East with the Braves and Phils also loading up.

If the Braves or Phillies have some growing pains next season, that could create an opening. The Mets have the pitching (if healthy) to compete. Assembling that type of rotation again down the road will be tough. They could add another infielder either a 3B or shortstop and more BP depth
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 Was watching best Hrs of 2018 season. A bunch are walkoffs or milestones etc. Unfortunatley, way too much were off the Jays vaunted relievers. I am always an advocate of the BP being not just an afterthought filled with scrubs, even if you are not a playoff team. However, I think this year and next with such a young Blue Jays team, for morale reasons and winning begits winning, we really need a good pen, regarless of our competitive window.

Unlikely they add any significant BP pieces. More likely Shatkins throws out a bunch of the rule 5 eligible guys on the 40 man to see what they have. Some combination of Waguespack, Perez, Paulino, Murphy, Thornton, Drake, Merryweather, and Diaz I would expect will see time in the BP at various points this season.

Yep, plus take on a couple of the castoffs from here on through spring training

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2018 Author Posted December 2, 2018 <3 Trevor! Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer is another offseason trade candidate, but he explained to MLB Network this week that it wouldn’t make sense for the Tribe to deal him now. “There’s a lot of reasons I think that [the Indians should not trade me],” Bauer said (via Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com). “Ultimately, I think the surplus value on me this year is just way too high. Even with an arbitration raise, you’re probably talking about $15 to $20 million of surplus value.” Bauer added that it would be more logical for the Indians to move him a year from now, when his price will rise and he’ll be just one year from reaching free agency. The 27-year-old provided oodles of surplus value to the Indians in 2018, when he logged an amazing 2.21 ERA/2.44 FIP over 175 1/3 innings for a little more than $6.5MM. He’s projected to earn another reasonable salary – $11.6MM – in 2019.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 Trevor Bauer is probably more baseball savvy than half the GMs in baseball
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 Trevor Bauer is probably more baseball savvy than half the GMs in baseball I thought he was an idiot before, but I think now he might be one of my favourite players.

Cano should be fine for a few more years, and could be their DH and do fine, too. I think Steamer predicts 2.6 WAR for 2019, but I'll bet more like ~ 4 will be the case.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 Damn the Phillies gave up on Scott Kingery very fast, and seemingly they must not believe in J.P. Crawford very much either.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 Is the deal Kingery AND Crawford for Segura? I doubt it, but you'd have to believe that at least one of them would be included right?

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2018 Author Posted December 3, 2018 Not only has Seattle acquired prototypical Mariner Jay Bruce this offseason, they've now also acquired another in Carlos Santana for some reason. Lol!
