Are you still offering him to me, he might be an upgrade on my 6th starter Kuhl.

I'm happy with Snell, Reyes, Folty, Mahle, and Chatwood.

Santana is untouchable my friendo. 6IP 11K's, 0BB, 3 singles, 0 ER.

Not sure if they will bring him out for the 7th but he's made this AAA (which is pretty talented) look like hot garbage.

Angels, like the Jays, continue to go into meltdown mode--Daniel Robertson of the Rays hit a grand slam off Heaney, and it's 4-0 already. Suddenly, the A's and Mariners and even the Rays are threatening the Angels chances..

You can't win in dynasty putting the untouchable tag on anyone

You might want to stop laughing--Angels have lost 6 of their last 8 games, and some of those games weren't even against good teams. Like with the Jays, the bullpen usage from earlier in the season is catching up to them, as I exactly expected to happen. And Middleton blowing out his elbow was a gut punch to the Angels, pressuring an already depleted relief corps. And the lineup outside of Trout and Simmons still isn't hitting.. not even Ohtani can help the offense.

At the rate things are going, my money's on a rising Oakland A's team.. and the Jays are getting a rude awakening against Oakland. They look more like a team that could surprise a lot of people and contend.. and of course, Tampa can't be ruled out, even though they have no shot in the East due to the Yanks and Red Sox juggernauts.

This Sergio Romo / Rays thing deserves more attention.

My favourite baseball development in a while. Forget Closers - we need more Openers. Just neuter the top of the other team's order right out of the gate.

I wonder if Josh Hader has a shot at a Cy Young. His pace is like 90 IP and 180 Ks with a 0.77 FIP and over 18 K/9.

Eric Gagne won a Cy Young in 2003.

Depends on the other competition. Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom have been really good though.

Has a full time reliever ever struck out 200 batters in a single season? Would be remarkable to see in today's game.

2nd day the Rays are doing this. I'm going to tune into the game today. I'm really curious if this actually works over a long period. Might eliminate the 4th-5th starters of a rotation.

Mark Eichhorn had 166 in 1986, which was rather incredible for the times. I'm not sure what the record is.

Edit: Dick Radatz with 181 in 1964.

I don't think it really eliminates the 4th-5th starters it just turns them into long relievers because they technique aren't starting the game. It's an interesting concept that it could keep several pitchers stretched out in case one of the top 3 starters goes down and they could just slide into a traditional starters role. It's going to be interesting seeing how this concept plays out.

Well I shouldn't have used the word eliminate yes. But rather than starting your worst starter out of the gate, you use them in the 2nd inning on to pitch once through the full lineup and again until the 1-3 bats come up for a second time. If that goes accordingly to plan, that should get you to the 5th-6th inning before you turn to the pen again.

Something even the Jays should try with their No. 4-5 starters not being the greatest. I'd like to see Biagini pitch 3+ solid innings from the 2nd inning on where he only faces the top bats in that lineup only once.

I think doing a piggy back system could appeal to many smaller market teams for a variety of reasons. It would give them more options in multi-inning relievers, keep the number of times through the lineup down, and could lower payroll as the "relievers" go through arbitration.

Rays have a bunch of those type of arms: Austin Pruitt, Ryan Yarbrough, and Matt Andriese. They're No. 5 starters at best and maybe 6th, 7th starters on a contending teams depth chart and aren't good enough to make it through 30 + starts over a full season. Use them only for 3-4 innings starting from the second inning on and they likely have more success. As well, gives the Rays BP like you said more options in multi-inning relievers if you ever need to use them again within those 4-5 days. For example, I'm sure if Andriese gives you 3.1 innings on Saturday out of the pen, I'm sure you can use him again on Monday for Tuesday for 3-6 outs if you need to before you have him go again on the Thursday.

It really is an interesting idea. I wonder if teams will adapt to it by changing their lineups?

I don't think they will or should do that. The top of the lineup tends to be your best hitters anyway, and if you flip flop after that then the team having the bullpen game can adjust easily to have better matchups.

It's not really a bullpen day, they're just trying to reduce the number of times the starter having to face the top of the order. The starter comes in in the 2nd inning. I doubt they'll do it with all their pitchers, but it is kind of interesting.

Well, Rich Hill threw 2 pitches tonight and Santana is on the 40 man and his turn would come up in Hill's next start.

Santana just struck out the first guy in the 6th. 10K's, 0BBs, 5.1 innings

Sun, May 20

Alex Wood departed Sunday's start against the Nationals with an apparent injury.

Advice: Wood was warming up prior to the bottom of the seventh inning and called the trainer out. He walked off the field after a brief conversation. Wood has dealt with cramping recently and it was a hot day in Washington, D.C., so perhaps that's all this is. The Dodgers should update his status soon.
