BTS Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 So is the NBA, these suggestions will never happen. I really think the MLB system is healthier than the NBA or NHL - they just need a few tweaks to reflect the fact that teams are increasingly efficient about spending. They need ways to get money to players earlier in their careers,, when they're producing the most value. Three years at the minimum salary needs to go.

Yup, I think it was Abom who suggested after 1 year, Arb kicks in. Easiest fix I've heard thus far.
mtljaysfan Verified Member Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Strike is definitely on the horizon for 2021. It could be good for the Jays. Adapting a system like the NBA and the NHL where there is a cap and a floor will result in a more even playing field. We may also see more playoff spots. A strike is no good for anybody, specially not for the Jays as we will start dominating around that time. Last strike killed my Expos ( I know I'm old lol), and my passion for the game for a long time. What a wonderful year that would be for canadian baseball if not for that strike. Two canadian teams dominating each league and potentially meeting in World series? like a dream

I don't think it is a complete problem solver. It probably leads teams to more often hold back prospects to get a year and a half before that first arbitration and the late bloomers may never get their chance. More arbitration likely means less players sticking with their original club (I am not even sure if that is a bad thing) at free agency.

Yeah, I can see some of that being a problem that you alluded to, but I certainly think it's better set-up than what the players have now. Anyway, this could be a one year thing or maybe a trend, this talk could all be for not.

It certainly doesn't solve everything, but it does help tie younger players salary to performance a little better while still protecting team control. It would help if the arbitration amount could also decrease (although only by a small percentage) as well as increase. Maybe instead of one year at min salary, you give a fixed number of games at which time it immediately goes to arbitration for the remaining games that year or something.

When they pass the rookie qualification threshold. I would agree to this if it comes out of a general MLB revenue pool. Imagine if you're a team that was smart enough to draft and develop a Trout. Congratulations! Your reward is to start paying him a $5M annual salary starting June and that f***s up your budget for the year. Have the first X amount of games of his salary covered by the league no matter when he crossed that threshold. That avoids teams trying to game the system where players cross the threshold April 5th but also allows them to plan their budget in the off-season since they can reasonably estimate when they have to cover the player's salary.

Also makes very clear that further study is needed https://www.topvelocity.net/weighted-baseball-training-causes-serious-injury/

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 With the rhetoric being tossed around right now, is there anyway we don't see a work stoppage in 2021 for MLB? Hell, a strike seems to be a growing possibility at this point even sooner http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/baseball-agent-rising-tide-among-players-radical-change/ And as usual since it's a sportsnet post, the comments section is full of retardation
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Is there a more vanilla FG writer than Travis Sawchik? His chats are excruciating. He doesn't say anything.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 I love Bartolo like everyone does but in what universe was he effective last year, Heyman? It must be in comparison to the 8.14 ERA he posted in the NL last year.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 I love Bartolo like everyone does but in what universe was he effective last year, Heyman? That one game against the Jays was pretty good. That's probably what is keeping his AL opponents' stats in the "effective" category by whatever Heyman is using.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Also Colon is clearly sticking around for 300 wins and guaranteed first ballot HOFer. It's take him until 50 at this pace. He'll also be the first ever 300-300 player. 300 wins, 300 pounds.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 2/17 for Todd Frazier seems like a bargain for the Mets.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 2/17 for Todd Frazier seems like a bargain for the Mets. It should be. The bat isn't anything special, but the overall package is still very valuable. A good bet to post 5 WAR over the 2 years. Morales. f***
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Phil Coke is making a comeback as a knuckleballer. Don't see many lefties tossing the ole knuckle in there.

BTS Community Moderator Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 The market doesn't make any sense. Todd Frazier is 32 and has been comfortably above average every year of his career, and his projected to be again. He just got the same money as Pat Neshek and Juan Nicasio. How could no other team beat 2/17?
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Perhaps because teams either don't have the money, already have 3B, and aren't willing to pay big money for low average/high walk and power players, especially watching guys like Jose Bautista and Chris Davis implode in recent years.
Ray Verified Member Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Mike Moustakas’ market is all dried up. Angels and Mets were his two primary suitors and they’re gone. Which is good because f*** Mike Moustakas.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 I wonder if we're at the point that we might start seeing some 1 year pillow contracts for some of the guys who thought they would get multi year deals.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 A week until pitchers and catchers report for a lot of teams! What a bizarre off season, to have that many top free agents still available this close to ST is unfathomable really. Has anything remotely like this ever happened before?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Yankees. Though they might be holding out for Machado/Donaldson next year I have to think the Yanks are prepared to open the season with Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres at 3rd and 2nd. I suspect they would have been open to a short term filler like Todd Frasier, but I can't imagine they'd ever sign Moose to a multi year deal.
