DH--and it's possible he turns down a deal with Boston because he wants to play OF, which the Red Sox cannot offer due to a full outfield.

Cant see him turning down the only team willing to pay him big $$, considering this is probably the biggest contract of his life.

I think he has no problems playing DH, more like he was promised a ridicolous amount of money by his agent, and Boston values him at $125M, which means he would have to be a .900 OPS guy for the next 5 years to give them any value.

I think some of the calls for the Redsox not having a big power hitter are ridicolous. They won the ALEast for a second consecutive year, and the playoffs are a crapshoot anyways.

I think some of the calls for the Redsox not having a big power hitter are ridicolous. They won the ALEast for a second consecutive year, and the playoffs are a crapshoot anyways.

You could make the argument that the Redsox would be worst off with JD Martinez, the could simply hold on the cash, get behind the luxury tax, than get Machado next year with Pedroia close to the end. Move Bogaerts to 2nd, and have an infinitely better team. I would pick the Redsox over the Yankees for the ALEast this year even if they do nothing. Hanley is coming off the books as well,

Redsox don't have to do anything, the rest of the American league is sinking really fast. Rays and Orioles maybe 90 loss teams, at the worst they are guaranteed a wild card game with Chris Sale pitching.

Sale gets hurt and they are the Blue Jays. Bryce Brentz is presently projected for 245 PA (and 0.1 fWAR), Moreland shouldn't be hitting lefties, Hanley should be at a point where they are selective to the pitchers he faces...at a minimum you cannot let Hanley get that $22M vesting option at 497 PA. It does improve them enough and they are not a guarantee (IMO) that JD might makes sense for them. I don't like the contract but Boston thinks they are beyond worrying about money

What also might be holding the Sox back is his agent demanding more money and years--and Boston has limited flexibility to add any more payroll, as they are presently at about $204M and still need upgrades on the bench and bullpen, as this team seriously lacks depth thanks to Dombrowski nuking the farm to win now.. as it stands, injury-prone Brock Holt is the super-utility guy (coming off a terrible 2017), Devan Marrero (who struggles to hit but has a good glove) is the backup INF, there's no clarity at backup catcher as Sandy Leon and Blake Swihart are DFA candidates being out of options, and Bryce Brentz as the backup OF.. and the bullpen badly needs another reliever. Right now, even the Jays bench looks better than Boston's (pending us adding another catcher).

Spending on JD Martinez isn't exactly smart when Boston has other holes on the roster, especially with the bench and the backend of the rotation until E-Rod returns.

Yes, but Dombrowski has shot it down.. they can't afford to lose JBJ's defense and he still has offensive potential--though he is 28 in April.

Jon Singleton suspended 100 games for his 3rd positive drug test. His career is all but over, but TIL the Astros signed him to a rare pre-debut $10 million extension with Houston back in 2014. That contract will expire after the 2018 campaign. Lucky guy. Stupid on the Astros for not having an out clause for stupidity.

He ran a 120 wRC+, which is not impressive for a 26 year old at his third go-around in AA, but it is 20% above the league average. Slash lines are deceiving, you have to take into account the run environment that he's in.

Royals Sign Ryan Goins To Minor League Deal

The Royals announced that they’ve signed infielder Ryan Goins to a minor league contract and invited him to Major League Spring Training. Goins is a client of Octagon.

Goins, 29, has spent the past half decade as a reserve infielder for the Blue Jays, appearing in 449 contests and coming to the plate a total of 1397 times at the big league level. He’s never been much of an asset at the plate, however, batting a combined .228/.275/.335 with 20 homers and six steals in that time. To Goins’ credit, he did hit a career-best nine homers last year, though that small spike in a power came during a historically high home-run environment for Major League Baseball.

While Goins isn’t a big threat at the plate, he’s been an asset in the field over his first five big league campaigns. Defensive Runs Saved credits him as an above-average shortstop and a superlative defender at second base (+6 in 1362 innings and +24 in 1870 innings, respectively). Ultimate Zone Rating, meanwhile, feels he’s been roughly average at shortstop and nine runs above average at second base. Goins also has limited big league experience at third base, first base and in both outfield corners, though he’s totaled fewer than 50 innings at each of those positions.

Toronto non-tendered Goins earlier this*winter in his first offseason of arbitration eligibility. If he makes the Royals’ roster and the team likes what it sees, he can be retained for at least the 2019 and 2020 campaigns via*arbitration.
