Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 It's kind of bizarre, what was the rush to trade Ozuna? Alcantara is alright, but he's a pitcher and not even a consensus Top 100 guy. They should have at least been able to get Reyes here. I would have thought that many teams would be in on Ozuna, given his youth and relatively modest projected arb salary. They should have been able to get at the very least at Top 50 position prospect and some near-MLB ready ~50 FV types. I can draw some parallels to Beane-Donaldson-AA opportunity. Rather than biding your time, Miami's dumbass FO (possibly forced by the new owners) is slapping a price tag on their merchandise in a garage sale and the first one that walks buy and offers something remotely reasonable gets a deal. This timing is absolutely asinine.....doing this mid-December.

Alcantara being the centerpiece is an egregious return. This reminds me of the Simmons trade.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 I mean thats it? WTF? I feel like we could have beat that without giving up Vlad or Bichette easily.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Although there's a strong possibility this trade reflects the inability of the Marlin's FO to properly valuing assets.....I think there's also a chance that people around baseball do not believe last year was a true reflection of Ozuna's abilities. If most see him closer to the 2 WAR player he was in 2015 + 2016, then this return makes a lot more sense.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Yelich is like Hosmer in that a swing adjustment may make him even more valuable. He still hits 55% of balls into the ground - making it all the more impressive he's able to provide 4.5 WAR a year. I'd give up Bo or Pearson if needed to get him without a second thought.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 This timing is absolutely asinine.....doing this mid-December. Yep, multiple years of control. Makes no sense to rush and accept this offer. The Marlins are going to be horrid for several years. Good luck paying down that $400M in debt when you have no ticket revenue.

The best part is my 7 year old just asked for a Marlin's hat for Christmas (which we ordered). I have no idea why he wanted it (he also asked for a Houston Astros's WS championship hat). He may now be their only fan.

My wife went to Miami and she brought me back a Marlins hat because i am a lover of all baseball hats.... However i may have to hang that one up for a few years lol
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Magneuris Sierra in the deal too. That makes things look a bit better.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Yelich is not moving now unless the return is higher than anyone should be willing to pay
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Magneuris Sierra in the deal too. That makes things look a bit better. Marlins love those guys that are young and on the 40 man already.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Zac Gallen and Daniel Costano round out the return. Sierra is all glove and Alcantara is probably a reliever. f***ing lol.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Zac Gallen and Daniel Costano round out the return. Sierra is all glove and Alcantara is probably a reliever. f***ing lol. That's just sad.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Zac Gallen and Daniel Costano round out the return. Sierra is all glove and Alcantara is probably a reliever. f***ing lol. Welp, those last two pieces suck. Overall return is very bad.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Welp, those last two pieces suck. Overall return is very bad. and you said Vlad would have to be involved if we got him. We could have probably kept Vlad, Alford and bichette and still got him.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 and you said Vlad would have to be involved if we got him. We could have probably kept Vlad, Alford and bichette and still got him. Yeah. I thought Miami would get $50M+ in value for him, and they got half that.

Gross return. I get saving money and tearing it down to do a full rebuild, but this is an egregious transfer of value.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Probably the kind of return we'd be looking at for JD
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 In theory we could use a Donaldson return to get Yelich essentially, without touching Vladdy or Bichette. I'd rather take on a bad contract instead, but that's always a possibility. 1 year of Donaldson for 5 cheap years of Yelich would be fantastic.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Gross return. I get saving money and tearing it down to do a full rebuild, but this is an egregious transfer of value. I don’t understand how this happens, even if they wanted a quick deal. His salary isn’t prohibitive, so there should have been at least half a dozen teams in on him. The market should have developed on it’s own - there’s no way Sierra, Alcantara and trash was the top offer. I guess the easiest explanation is that the FO has no idea what it’s doing.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Pretty disappointing that we couldn't beat that
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Probably the kind of return we'd be looking at for JD JD is probably about as valuable as Ozuna, and I’d be livid with this return.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Probably the kind of return we'd be looking at for JD I doubt it. I think our front office would go quality over quantity, plus they're not in a position where they HAVE to sell.
JG34 Verified Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Yuck, Marlins must’ve felt bad for getting the Cards’ hopes up on Stanton, so gifted them Ozuna.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 At this point I'd have no plm moving JD to the Yanks to fill their 3B hole, and take back Ellsbury and his contract and whatever prospects that gets you.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 Apparently Alcantara is the centerpiece. The Marlins have completely botched this trade. Where would Alcantara fall in our top prospects rankings?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 At this point I'd have no plm moving JD to the Yanks to fill their 3B hole, and take back Ellsbury and his contract and whatever prospects that gets you. Wait a second. This is your plan? -Trade JD to a division and WC rival (okay not ideal but shouldn't be a dealbreaker) -Take back a s*** contract (uhh...) -Take "whatever" prospects this gets us ...
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 At this point I'd have no plm moving JD to the Yanks to fill their 3B hole, and take back Ellsbury and his contract and whatever prospects that gets you. Gleyber is their top prospect and he's not exciting enough to give up Donaldson and take on Ellsbury.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 Gleyber is their top prospect and he's not exciting enough to give up Donaldson and take on Ellsbury. He's like a top 5 prospect in the game
