MLBTR speculates that the Indians might not pick up Brantley's 12 million option because he's going to be out 4-5 months from his Ankle Surgey. I think he would be a great target for the Jays if they do decline and we have prospect depth in the upper minors to help mitigate the injury risk.

I think they'll end up picking up the option. $12m is nothing in baseball today, even by cheap ass Cleveland standards.

But if they decline the option, then I'd be down for Brantley on a one year deal. The AAA outfield will probably be some combination of Alford, Teoscar (if he doesn't make the team), Pompey, Smith, etc. There's enough there to cover for Brantley's inevitable DL stint. It's not like Travis/Tulo where there's no depth at all.

I honestly think it behooves this FO to look at every younger (under 30) player that has put up positive WAR. Almost everyone is an improvement over our 2017 roster.

I think it might behoove the FO to spend right to the luxury tax threshold.

This might keep 3M bums in the seats for 2018. And if it's spent on FA's, it'd keep the farm intact.

When we traded and signed a bunch of players in 2013, we sucked, but man attendance was up. I'd like to do this again, hopefully without the "suck" component.

What happened to the MLB USD to CAD exchange rate subsidy that the Jays used to receive? Even though it's improved from the FO's POV, a ~25% kickback would sure be nice. I thought that was a possibility a few years, to restart that subsidy?

That won't happen. Ever. I think we've all been fans of this organization long enough to know that Rogers isn't that kind of owner.

It's certainly not going to happen in one year, where the company has to report its numbers to the investing public. I can see a steady rise each year, assuming team revenues continue upwards and Rogers can justify the increased expense.

They've owned the team for a long time. They've never come close to the luxury tax. They're not going to.

I tend to agree with you, but this is the first time the team has been to the playoffs since Rogers bought them. Revenue and attendance are on a different level now than it was at any time prior. Plus they seem to increase payroll when they forecast attendance dropping, hence why the payroll ballooned up mysteriously after a 73 win season in 2012 while it continued to drop after 85 and 81 win seasons the two years before that.

I'd say the payroll will be around $170mm if I had to guess. Maybe a bit higher. The front office doesn't even seem that enthused about the team's chances in 2018 so I don't think the payroll will increase that much unless Rogers wants to sell hype again.

To their credit, they always said they would spend “ when the time was right”. Few saw that as meaning after a last place finish.

Bo Schultz, Cesar Valdez, Darrell Ceciliani outrighted off the 40-man to accomodate the 60 day DL guys who will need to be on the 40 after the WS ends. This brings them to 39 spots taken on the 40.

Did you bet on the Dodgers or something?

No, I just like their team and wanted them to win.

Forgot about him.

At least that fat f*** doesn't get a ring.

Scooter Gennett could be another good trade target. Can play 2B and the outfield, Reds are looking to cut payroll. Could be worth a gamble to see if his breakout year was legit.

mlbtraderumors.com's Top 50 Free Agent List is out.

They have the Jays signing Jay Bruce (3 years, 39 million), Eduardo Nunez (2 years, 14 million) and Tony Watson (2 years, 12 million).

I was just going to post this. Nunez and Watson seem like good choices but I'm not confident Bruce can repeat his last year. That being said we are thin in the outfield so who knows. This front office seems to like him a lot.

Is Watson a FIP beater? On paper that deal looks too big but if there is something about him I'm not seeing he could be worth a deal like that I guess. I'd probably pass unless that were the case though.

Bruce is an interesting one. We all hated him and then he put up a big season. I read that positioning was the culprit for his poor defense. He also rebounded with the stick somehow. 3 years for 39 mil seems ok.

Nunez at 2 years, 14 mil I would take in a second.

Yeah I would think Nunez grabs a larger guarantee than that.

Who is the decision list for promoting to the 40 or leaving them exposed? I remember Rowdy and forgot everyone else. I know there were some interesting names. I think it's Jansen and the Model?. Edited by TheHurl

One of the really interesting predictions - Michael Pineda $6m for 2 years. That'd be a risk worth taking IMO, even if he ends up missing all of 2018.

My Dad, like most Quebecers pre-Expos, grew up a huge Dodgers fan and I always had a little Dodgers love until they played the Spos. So despite having some money on Houston (an $80 win....wiped out when I live bet $60 on the Dodgers while down 5), I was cheering for the Dodgers (or screaming WHAT THE f*** ARE YOU DOING to Bellinger) but stated several times that I was torn because it would mean that AA would get a ring. My hatred runs pretty deep with that fat ass greek

Lots of interesting names who are exposed this year:

Top 30 prospects:

Rowdy Tellez

Danny Jansen

Conner Greene

Max Pentecost

Reese McGuire

Thomas Pannone

Conner Greene

Jordan Romano

Angel Perdomo

Francisco Rios

Other:

Andrew Case

Tim Lopes

Jonathan Davis

Conor Fisk

Tellez, Jansen, Pannone, Greene, Pentecost, and McGuire almost assuredly will be added. Maybe Perdomo as well.
