Kelly Gruber Verified Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 We could look at playing Martin 1/2 time at 3rd if necessary. It would probably improve his bat quite a bit and keep him healthy, and the other half of catcher could be easier to fill this offseason than other positions. I don't think Gyorko would be absolutely necessary. Speaking of 3B, what the hell happened with Lawrie? He's practically dropped off the planet it seems. Jose Bautista 1 year, 2 million. His lack of range doesn't show up as much at 3rd and he could have bounce back year at plate. If doesn't 2 million isn't much to DFA

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 You do realize how good JD is right? The guy's a f***ing baseball Cyborg, if he had stayed healthy early on, he's in the MVP talks again, or walks away with it. People have short memories. Remember the Halladay deal. Roy Halladay for three guys that never amounted to much. And the Jays spun around for 4 years... until deciding to collect players like Halladay, instead of trading them. In 2010, the Jays won 85. If they kept Halladay they might of been in the 90s and won a wild card. What if we Trade JD and Tulo and Travis and Sanchez come back healthy... and they win 85? Or what if we Trade JD, and win 77 again next year, but the Wild Card is weak again?? I'm not against trading him... just I agree with Spanky. You keep in mind that you may be trading a playoff spot, so you tell everyone your keepings, and you keep him unless someone absolutely blows you away with an offer.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 Some unrealistic expectations of what 1 yr of JD will bring. Gyorko for sure (Cards would no longer need him or his $), Reyes, and low minors high upside guy is likely fair value
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 Because it's been made public Josh is not going to the Cards. If he is moved it'll be to a team we haven't heard from.

Lawrie couldn't make the adjustments that he needed to make after the pitchers adjusted to him. That's what separates the guys who are good enough to make if to MLB, from those that are good enough to stay

He still put up 1 WAR in a little over 1/2 season of PA in 2016. Maybe his leg injury was a lot more significant than thought.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 Kelly and Gomber in the deal please. Obviously not as the main piece.

Laika Community Moderator Posted October 1, 2017 Author Posted October 1, 2017 Brett Lawrie's year off is endlessly fascinating. I assume that he just didn't want to play, the same way that some 14 year old might get sick of rep sports and quit randomly. I legit think he just preferred to do nothing. I wonder if he'll play next year. Hope Toronto signs him. Neeja

I took a peek at his Twitter feed though (always dangerous to do), and there's hints that he's still rehabbing. Whatever the injury was, I think it may have been a lot more serious than assumed.

If you check out his Instagram, he was doing box jumps and s*** months ago. He could have been playing baseball all year... maybe it's a mental health thing actually.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 Then sign an extension and don't test free agency
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 That's awesome to hear. I wonder if he'd be willing to sign a team-friendly extension to stay. 4 years/$100M would be perfect, and would keep him with the team through his age 36 season.
mtljaysfan Verified Member Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 It's obvious JD wants to play with Vladitto lol

Probably would have to go with a higher AAV on a shorter term deal.

I'd love to see something around 5/125 that kicks in for 2018. I'm sure he wants more and someone may be willing to do it, but I think it's a fair deal for both sides if he actually wants to stay.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 Step 1. Don't trade him in offseason Step 2. Insult him with lowball offer Step 3. Be a bubble team at the deadline, don't trade him Step 4. Miss playoffs. Step 5. Lose him for a draft pick
metafour Verified Member Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 4 years/$120M would likely get it done. Probably would have to go with a higher AAV on a shorter term deal. Why would that get it done? Yoenis Cespedes, a vastly inferior player, just signed for 4 years $110 million a year ago. Donaldson isn't signing for a discount. Please don't get David Price'd here (remember that? "Oh I totally wanna stay with the Jays!!").
Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 If you can't sign him this offseason I would explore trading him. Without knowing much about the cards farm would Gyorko, Bader, Flaherty, and Alcantara be sufficient?

Shapiro is too smart for this, he just has to convince Rogers.

Assuming you mean 4/100 plus his next year of Arb. Even then you're going to have to give him more per year to appease the union.

Donaldson will be 33 come 2019. Donaldson is a better player yes, though I don't think many teams will be lining up with 7 year deals on the table. All I was suggesting was on a short term deal, you likely have to go higher on the AAV. Someone suggested 4/100M and I said it likely has to be 4/120M to even start the discussion. Likely JD will be $30M per season I think, nothing lower especially on only a 4 or 5 year deal. I'd probably do a 5 years/$150M extension starting in 2018.
