Isn't it like a $25M bid cap tho or something now?

I believe it's around 20mill but then you've still gotta figure out what a reasonable contract for the player is. At least the Jays have some leverage over half the league by being able to offer him the DH spot on his non pitching days. Hopefully the allure of being a superstar for a team that, in a way, represents a country and not just a city might have some influence on him, too. That is, as long as the contract offer itself is competitive.

If Otani does post this offseason, 30 teams will be in play because the max commitment he can receive under the new CBA is a signing bonus of less than $10M. Hard to see him choosing Toronto when literally 30 teams will be offering him almost identical compensation.

Ah okay. I thought there was something about a max offer now. Is this because he's under 23?

We'd have to overpay for Otani. The big teams will all make a play and we'd have to give him a reason to come to Toronto. I bet he doesn't even know this city exists.

Are you crazy? This is the best I mean the BEST TIME EVER to be a team located in Canada. It's never going to get any more favourable than this.

Someone please give Trump a Japanese flag to use as a napkin after a hearty lasagna meal.

Yeah, he's subject to the international bonus restrictions because of his age. It actually makes no sense whatsoever for him to come over now.

I expect this FO will make a play for Otani when he's posted.

I bought an Otani jersey when I was in Japan this spring. Also, saw a Fighters/Tigers game as well, though he was injured unfortunately.

Good point, but hasn't he been the one asking his team to post him despite the rules? I think they've just been reluctant because they still have years of control left on him.

Yeah, he apparently wants to come over anyway. People are suggesting that he might sign for $9M or whatever the limit is, and have a handshake agreement for a 200M extension that would be announced during the season, but there's a lot of risk there for him: if he gets hurt, or pitches terribly, there would be nothing holding the team to their end of the bargain. And nobody knows how long this would have to be delayed for MLB to not consider it circumvention of the CBA.

Yeah, definitely risky but that's the sorta proposition I'm hoping the Jays are considering.

I don;t know if any team would do that or not. You could alienate a lot of people, for example he gets hurt or does not perform and you pull that extension that was discussed your likely going to loose potential players from coming to your team because they don't trust you even though it is in the teams best interest not to sign him that long. It could put your team in a terrible position.

I only care if I spell people's names correct of those people I respect. Havoc, you're just trash so I didn't bother checking.

Excellent. Having your respect would be worse than having AIDS.

Carry on.

AFI fan?

Nope.

I was radio DJ years back and had to come up with a name for the air on a new station in town because nobody in their right mind uses their real name, cuz of stalkers like Cleveland Steamer up there.

Me and another DJ from the station were sitting in Boston Pizza one night brainstorming and eventually came to John Havoc... but I just didn't like the c at the end. I ws big into comics as a kid and remembered Cyclops brother from the Xmen was called Havok.... bada boom.

Hey Havoc. You forgot to include the part where you were a low-end male prostitute after your DJing career flamed out.

Havoc, look back a few posts to see who started this. You like to dish it out, but when you get it back, you go crying to mommy.

Yup. I'm the one crying. For sure.

Yes that's what I said. You obviously aren't the sharpest tool. You are a tool though. Go eat (another) dick. I'm out.
