Mat Latos RHP

Latos earned himself another start with six scoreless innings during his last outing vs. the Cardinals. Latos' days in the rotation might be numbered with J.A. Happ recovering but he could still stick around in the bullpen.

Masahiro Tanaka RHP

Tanaka may have turned in his best performance as a Yankee last time out, throwing a shutout to defeat the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Tanaka allowed only three hits, no walks and struck out three in the 97-pitch "Maddux."

The Yankees have emerged as an early contender in the American League East, while the Blue Jays are still trying to find their footing as the regular season enters its second month.

New York entered play on Monday tied with the Orioles for the top spot in the division. The Blue Jays are a distant fifth, and while most experts would have predicted the exact opposite, Yankees manager Joe Girardi is not surprised about his team's early showing.

"With the way that we played in Spring Training and the contributions that we have from so many different people, I'm not surprised," Girardi said. "I was more surprised by our 1-4 start than where we are today. I said this Spring Training, that I really liked this team and I felt that we were going to score more runs, which we have."

Toronto's three-game series at Yankee Stadium will continue on Tuesday night when right-hander Mat Latos is scheduled to take the mound vs. New York ace Masahiro Tanaka. Latos, who signed a Minor League deal earlier this spring, has been filling in while the Blue Jays deal with injuries to starters Aaron Sanchez and J.A. Happ.

Latos initially was expected to make just one or two starts, but that plan changed when Happ did not progress as quickly as expected and Sanchez's return from the disabled list lasted all of one inning before he cracked a nail on his right middle finger and required more time away.

The Blue Jays also are dealing with injuries to key position players Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki. Toronto has been playing better of late, recently winning its first series of the year, but health has not been on its side.

"They've had to deal with a lot of injuries," Girardi said. "Sometimes, if you get a couple of position players nicked up, it's one thing. It's seemed to hit them all over the place -- starting pitching, position players, middle-of-the-order hitters. They have played better, and if you look the way they've swung the bats last week, they've swung the bats better. It seems like they're starting to get going."

• Tanaka's groundball rate has increased in each game he has pitched this season, capped by his 65.4-percent mark in his shutout of the Red Sox in his last start. That performance brought his season rate to 54.8 percent, 11th-highest of 144 pitchers with at least 50 balls in play against them.

• The Blue Jays have won back-to-back season series (2015-16) against the Yankees for the first time since 1990-94. Toronto entered play on Monday with a 25-13 record vs. New York dating back to the start of 2015.

• Jose Bautista has faced Tanaka more than anybody else in the Blue Jays' lineup. He is a career .259 hitter (7-for-27) with one homer, a pair of doubles and four RBIs vs. the Japanese sensation.

I like the matchup for tomorrow's game a lot better. I don't trust Latos at all. But the team is playing a lot better.

Hopefully we can get to Tanaka early. Latos in this ballpark probably won't go well.
