To move him full time to LF? I could get behind that, and seems feasible, doesn't appear he has a future in KC.

Yeah. He'd seem like a good type of player to gamble on, and has the upside to be a solid, every day player at the major league level.

Agreed, I pondered the idea earlier in the year but then noticed he was hurt again. Probably the type of blocked, buy low player we should be pursuing.

Is Soler officially a bust? His stock is at an all time low. Wonder if we can nab him.

Not for Liriano. I'd be all for grabbing him, but I doubt we could without drastically overpaying.

They just traded Wade Davis for Soler. They aren't going to turn around and trade him for Liriano.

Hope its not Sparkman. They could have easily kept him.

That's probably the biggest thing. It would be a bad look to trade Soler now after the Davis trade. I'm sure they'll give Soler every chance to rebound.

Don't forget to factor in Liriano's salary. Liriano is pretty much a negative asset to us at this point as he's an impending FA and we won't make the playoffs. Let's say the Royals take on 3 million of his remaining contract and give us Sparkman. That's probably worth it.

Are you part of Rogers' accounting division? Who cares if the Jays save some salary this year (unless it's strategically used somewhere else this year). It's not like saving $3M this year will mean $3M more in next year's budget.

Well yeah that's true but I assume saving 3 million (or whatever the actual number is) and getting a guy is worth something compared to trotting out a struggling pitcher for a last placed team. If Liriano was actually good it'd be a difference conversation but his salary is going to heavily affect the return we get from him. I'd prefer we cover it all and got something decent but if we don't cover it all or at least a good chunk then we can probably expect a bag of balls.

I feel like if Liriano was put in the bullpen for the entire season ala Andrew Miller he'd have way more value than his stint as a starter. Then again, that would have meant seeing Latos pitch every 5th day.

Eat up the rest of Liriano's (and Estrada's) salaries and get a better return. The Jays are not trying to shed payroll. They are trying to get value back on players they will lose after this season. Money saved this season is meaningless to anyone except Rogers, and even they probably would have been ok with increasing payroll if the Jays were in the race right now given the attendance.

Don't have to eat up any money for Smith since he's probably viewed as an asset by other teams, but if they have to swallow $4mm or whatever it is for Liriano in order to get a better return, then do it.

Vallot is the 14th ranked prospect for the Royals.

Man imagine if Liriano was actually having a good year? He would have been a huge asset. There is interest in him despite pitching like ass for the last two years except for Aug/Sept 2016. Getting any type of value out of him in a trade would be great.

This is good. Getting anybody even remotely interesting for Liriano would be positive, even if it's just Sparkman or Vallot.

Liriano has produced 1 WAR in his last 48 games (239.2 innings) so he doesn't really have any "objective" value. Some subjective value though obviously.

Vallott Scouting Report..

7. Chase Vallot, c |

image: http://www.baseballamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/bba_video_icon_red.png

bba_video_icon_red

Born: Aug. 21, 1996 B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 215. Drafted: HS–Lafayette, La., 2014 (1st round supplemental). Signed by: Travis Ezi.

Background: The Lexington Legends have an auxiliary video board in left center field that proved to be a useful target for Vallot. Many of his 13 home runs (in only 82 games) landed around the board and one actually destroyed part of it. It was a highlight of a season that had plenty of bumps and some broken bones. A 93-mph Gage Hinsz fastball to the face was the worst injury, as Vallot missed a month recovering. He also missed time with a back injury.

Scouting Report: In between his injuries, Vallot showed some of the best power in the South Atlantic League. He was repeating the league, but was still among its younger catchers. Vallot can square up velocity and has started to show signs of recognizing spin. He projects as a below-average hitter with above-average power. Vallot is a well-below-average defensive catcher at this point with inconsistent footwork. He has to continue to work to stay nimble enough to have a chance to stay behind the plate. He struggles with throwing accuracy–all 17 errors he committed behind the plate came on wild throws.

The Future: In a perfect world, Vallot is a Mike Napoli-type slugging catcher whose

ability to catch gives his bat time to adjust to the big leagues. High Class A Wilmington is not a friendly place for power hitters, but it is Vallot’s next step

That's probably the only reason we're able to get ANYTHING for him at this point. Put him in a playoff race and/or the bullpen and there's real potential that he'll put together a couple amazing months for you.

When they traded Davis, they weren't expecting to compete this year. Their season has turned out better than expected, but Soler has been a dumpster fire, so trading him is plausible. They are in a different mode now than they were then.

Kind of hard to read those standings sorry....but wtf, if the Jays win today and Baltimore loses...we jump 2 teams in the wild card race and could be 5 back with 5 s***** teams to jump...

Do we have a shot at this? I'm certain the answer is still no, but maybe I can start to dream a little and begin to enjoy this season.

Man, this is precisely why I didn't want to finish around .500, to avoid being tricked into thinking we are a contender. But, perhaps we can be.

If they are looking at Sparkman for Liriano then forget that and let's play for the miracle...and it will take a miracle.

Even though they've won 4 in a row I don't think they've really been playing that good baseball. The As are s*** and could have split the series if their bullpen wasn't so bad.

The Jays finishing the year at 82 wins or slightly higher isnt going to delay their rebuilding process.

Getting the 15th pick instead of the 6th or 7th shouldnt make fans want to see the team lose for the sake of losing

I agree with this. A good GM should be willing to assess a trade based on the current situation (instead of trying to save face from a previous move).

Soler would be a nice lottery ticket for the Jays to get.

IMO playoffs is virtually impossible this season now, but we'd still be in a wildcard race if either we'd not started so epically badly, or if Sanchez and Donaldson had been fit all year.

Getting Soler would be a nice gamble to take, but getting him for Liriano seems like a huge reach. The Royals GM can't be that desperate for a rental who has no command.

The funny thing is the reality is Jays players playing well thus making their value go up>>>the value between a 5-10 pick and a 15-20 pick. Yet you hear people say its better if they lose.
