burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Never a bad minor league deal! Nice to have a LH bat.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 wRC+ of about 125 vs. RHP over the past 3 years with the cubs. Don't look at his #'s with the Ad's.. .they hurt the eyes.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Better player than Zeke or Pagan tbh
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 I highly approve this signing
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Good bet on his part. Him and his agent took one look at the Jays OF/IF depth and figured there will be a decent chance he gets a call up by June.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Can't really go wrong on a minor league deal with a guy like that.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Nice depth signing, especially since he will report to Buffalo. Coghlan and Pompey give us the type of OF depth that a playoff team should have. Remember when people were advocating a 3/24 deal for him earlier on the offseason? LOL
tercet Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Is he going to AAA or the major league team?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Lovely signing. I'd take him over Zeke and Goins right now, could platoon him with Upton as well. I'll eagerly await his call up.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Is he going to AAA or the major league team? minor league deal usually means minor leagues. Gibbons will make Cabrerra disappear soon if we're lucky.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 If Smoak starts the season badly and it results in Pearce being the full time 1B - then this is Smoak's replacement right here. Makes no sense to have Smoak as a bench player because he can only play 1B. The front office can give Smoak a month or two as a last chance.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Most likely means Upton makes the team over Goins, which is the right move.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Can Zeke be optioned down would Zeke be claimed were he to be optioned down.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Can Zeke be optioned down would Zeke be claimed were he to be optioned down. worth risking that he might have to play in Buffalo if no one takes him.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Outfield depth looking good, which is important since Bats is old and LF will likely be an issue once Pearce takes over 1b full time (we all know it will happen). Good move.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Coghlan is often marked as a utility IF? Is he a reasonable enough glove that he can cover for 3B on JD's DH days?
tercet Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Just DFA Zeke today before his contract becomes guaranteed on Monday. We will still have to pay 1/6 or whatever it % it works out to if he gets cut.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Coghlan is often marked as a utility IF? Is he a reasonable enough glove that he can cover for 3B on JD's DH days? He's quite a poor defender overall, he's dabbled a bit at 3B and 2B and the SSS defensive stats are not feeling it.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 I don't think any team will claim Zeke at $1mm. Coghlan's a better player than him and he got a minor league deal a day before opening day. I don't think teams are going to line up for Zeke unless they have a huge hole in the OF and just need a body. Maybe the Tigers.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 He's likely got a date clause where if he isn't on the big club, he's granted free agency.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 the Smoak extension looks worse every day that passes. Is this going to be a meme on this board, along with Morales forever? The good/lucky moves have far outweighed any of the bad. Morales, Smoak, Bautista and Coghlan are on this roster now at a combined committed dollars of around $60 million. This time last year there was talk of $100M+ going to Bautista alone. 2/20 for each of Morales and Coghlan would have been reasonable expectations as well. They Jays have come out WAY ahead with this league trend of declining demand for aging vets who play non-premium positions.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 DFA Goins or release Zeke both look like easy moves. I believe we would get savings on his arbitration contract if he's released before opening day.
GoldBull Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 He's been a positive outfielder the last two years and hit well (albeit SSS) when he moved out of the Oakland black hole. Good plate discipline, can hit a bit and a good OF - such a good 4OF.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 ESPN, Yahoo Sports etc. will have to redo their predictions taking this premier move into account.
Gary Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 This guy is a former rookie of the year. Huge signing. He can play infield and outfield. He's our Ben Zobrist.
