GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I heard some turd on the Fan the other day suggesting it's because they don't teach hitters how to hit anymore. He said hitters used to be taught to take the ball the other way and that's why there never used to be shifts. I think it's obvious that swings are analyzed and worked on a considerable amount more than "back in the day". IMO, shifts weren't used "back in the day" mostly because teams didn't have access to the data and/or didn't use it to their advantage enough. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/ahead-of-their-time-why-baseball-revived-a-60-year-old-strategy-designed-to-stop-ted-williams/ Teams were shifting 70+ years ago
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 Any baseball fan which says this is going to stop them from watching is blowing smoke. The "it's ruining the integrity of the game crowd" is equally full of s***. This is a non-factor rule change, which fans will likely end up enjoying in the end. I completely stopped watching NHL games because of "the trap" & the squeeze on fighting.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 As you're already a baseball fan you are not the target audience for changes to the game and so your opinion isn't as important to those in charge. Manfred cares about increasing baseball's popularity as that's a big part of his job. The reason you should care is that if more and more kids prefer sports like basketball Maybe they should let a player's walk up music play the entire time he's at the plate. Kind of follows the way the NBA is playing music and doing stupid s*** during their games.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 While I think you're probably right that baseball fans are not being turned off gy long marathon games, that's not what Manfred is concerned about. He's concerned with attracting the next generation of baseball fans. Promote the players, individual parks and fan experience at the park, online and on TV. Enforce current rules. Tweak things. And as was mentioned earlier without much discussion I like the MLB partnership with Under Armour. Huge brand that kids, young adults and older people can all identify.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I completely stopped watching NHL games because of "the trap" & the squeeze on fighting. I don't know anyone who likes hockey down here other than the occasional casual fan. I catch the odd Avs game but have never seen one. I saw one almost fight and everyone went nuts, casual fans were on their feet begging for it to happen. lol I don't know if fighting is good or not for the game but casual fans go nuts for it.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 If time saving is Manfred's goal. 154 game schedule shaves off 360'ish hours off games during the season.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I don't know anyone who likes hockey down here other than the occasional casual fan. That's why I can't stop laughing. Canadians, like every Canadian goes ape s*** during the Olympics for hockey. But in every other country people are yawning. Our entire country shuts down to cheer something on no other country cares about I catch the odd Avs game but have never seen one. I saw one almost fight and everyone went nuts, casual fans were on their feet begging for it to happen. lol I don't know if fighting is good or not for the game but casual fans go nuts for it. There's 2 things people stand and cheer for at a hockey game, goals and fighting.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 Well, that's not true, the Russians, Swedes, and Finns are very passionate about their hockey.

Fighting is generally supported by diehards, casuals, players, pretty much everyone in hockey. Outside influences are the reason that fighting is being reduced.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 By outside influences you mean the # of former players/fighters that suffered CTE and lost their lives because of it, right? As tragic as those instances are, it doesn't make anything I said untrue. There are more supporters of fighting than detractors amongst the fans and players. An overwhelming majority in my experience.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 For Participation I was only quoting team sports numbers. When I was talking about Auto Racing it was a Poll for what if your favourite sport to watch on TV. As for Horse Racing (A sport IMO, but I grew up with it in my family). I don't count viewership for it worldwide unless it's at the highest level. Some tracks are putting out horses that would have the baseball equivalent of 12 year old house league. I know Terminator was looking for a poll. Harris does one every year and results come out in February or March. http://static5.businessinsider.com/image/56eafd6c91058428008b71f6-800-600/01.png While interesting, this poll only shows favourite sports. Very few sports fans only follow one sport. FWIW the radio guy promoting horse racing was a horse racing journalist!
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I wouldn't mind that. Once your team is out of it there are so many pointless games to be played. But still, is shaving 8 games off of 162 even noticeable? Not even close. If Manfred wants to sell MLB to a new generation, he's gonna have to make the season 100 games MAX. Obviously that won't happen (and i'm glad because I love my baseball) People are going to have to accept baseball for what it is: an intense 6-month grind.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 If time saving is Manfred's goal. 154 game schedule shaves off 360'ish hours off games during the season. Not nearly enough to draw new interest IMO. I really don't know what the solution is to make Baseball more popular, but it's definitely not going to be solved by shortening games by 5-10 minutes here and there. I'll stand by my opinion that baseball is never going to be as popular as football because there are just too many games to follow for the casual fan.

Plus when playing every day there is limited time for hype for the next game, discussion of a great game or play you've seen etc. Because of this, individual games become less important in baseball than overall statistics. And for a lot of people, statistics are boring.
King Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Author Posted February 10, 2017 I think creating better ballpark experiences and finding a way to promote its stars better should be a focus rather than pace of play. Moving to Under Armor was a nice little step. I like that they are getting more buzz for the draft now, that needs to continue. I think the All-Star Futures Game format could be changed to make it a Rookie big leaguers vs. Minor leaguers. Or maybe they just leave the Futures Game the way it is and have a Rookies vs. Sophomores game like the NBA does. I always thought team prospect/showcase games would be cool. The NHL has a variety of prospect tournaments where teams send their prospects to play exhibition games against other teams prospects before the season starts. They could host them in MLB ballparks. And infuse it with the rookie development program they do every offseason. Jays team C - McGuire 1B - Tellez 2B - Urena SS - Gurriel 3B - Vlad CF - Alford OF - Woodman OF - Ramirez DH - Pentecost BN - Bichette/others SP - SRF RP - Greene/Harris/Zeuch/Rios/Perdomo/Borucki/others Don't think they need to change the Futures Game. It's a pretty great event already IMO.

Teams have limits on the amount of players from a level, say 5 players max from AAA, AA, A+, A, and A- (or something like that.) It would get a ton of viewership AND would be a very valuable evaluative tool for teams and public scouts.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 FTFY..... I am reluctant to give up on him...... He put up a solid season last year. Not really. 120 wRC+ as a 23 year old in high A ball with a 32%K rate is not that exciting especially considering he's not going to stick at catcher.

Maybe also get players (majors and minors) to be more involved with Little League as like guest coaches at a few practices during the season and then at the end of the season invite the teams to the stadium. It would get kids more involved with the regional teams and also a good community outreach for the teams. Our team used to go to Reading Phillies games at the end of the season and it was one of the things that got me to love baseball.

King Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Author Posted February 10, 2017 On second thought, this is basically just the AFL, lol. AFL is for ~5-7 players (with 3-4 of them usually being fringe, 30-40 FV at best) from each organization to get playing time if they missed it during the regular season. It's not really the same! It would be what the Futures Game is, just for individual organizations and done before the season.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 so why exactly are we focusing on the 12 game sample in high A, and completely ignoring the 154 wRC+ he put up over 62 games in A ball? Pretty much because I quickly glanced at the numbers and didn't see the SSS lol. The A ball numbers aren't overly impressive either considering his age though.
King Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Author Posted February 10, 2017 Maybe we could sort each teams organizational players by talent level and send them off to different baseball clubs around the country, and then have each team play each other in 3-4 games series routinely throughout the summer. Wow!
King Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2017 Author Posted February 10, 2017 Some teams already do it! This was in 2015. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/113690150/cubs-rangers-prospects-to-face-off-in-futures-game/ MESA, Ariz. -- The top prospects on the Cubs and the Rangers will meet March 30 at Sloan Park in a spring Futures Game, with a portion of the net proceeds from ticket sales benefiting the Mesa Diamond Project.

The talent is obviously still here he is just is set back advancement wise.

He was exciting because it looked like he could stick at catcher when he was drafted and be an above league average bat which would have been excellent. You put him in the corner OF and I'm not sure his bat plays there. I have pretty much given up on him.
