Liriano should be starting, the dogg is a f***ing idiot.

Both are two obvious and relevant facts here.

Stroman, Sanchez, Liriano, Estrada, Happ. That's a pretty good rotation, why are they talking about making Biagini start?

To increase starting depth and have insurance for when Estrada and Liriano's contracts are up at the end of the season.

If/when those guys go down, Biagini acting as a depth swingman after Bolsinger probably wouldn't be the worst thing.

Source: #BlueJays’ deal with Bautista, if completed, will be for one year with a mutual option.

Probably cuz no team makes it through the season with 5 starters, and our depth behind them is hideous.

Mutual options are stupid, but ok. It might as well just be a one year deal, if that's the case. A mutual option does nothing for either party; either one can reject it, both need to accept it, and an identical one year option could be negotiated in free agency anyway.

Having him throw a bunch of innings in ST is fine, just not sure how that will result in a tangible increase in his stamina. I understand having contingency plans, but the wording gets me.

He's fat, he'll be fine.

Wtf is an mutual option?

It's some optics ******** for know-nothing fans, I guess. It's like giving a promise ring to a girlfriend you already broke up with once before.

Maybe there's a buyout on it. Good way to extend Jose's take home pay without having to cough it up in 2017.

It's a pillow contract that allows Jose a chance to bounce back while also waiting out draft pick compensation. I'm not sure why they're dressing it up as a 2 year deal, but either way it looks very good for the Jays.

How many mutual options have actually been picked up by both sides? I don't remember it ever happening.

Nobody wanted to go long term with Bautista and from his perspective the next best thing to getting a long term contract now was signing a one year contract and hitting the market without compensation attached next year. He's a good bet to match or improve on last year's numbers so I like if for him and I like if for the the Jays. One year with a team option would have been amazing for the Jays but verry puzzling for José.

We could have got to this point a whole lot easier if he had just accpeted the q.o. but it is what it is. Both sides wanted something better. Both sides ran out of time.

I like the deal a whole lot less with a mutual option but whatever, gives the team another kick at the can.

So what you're saying is... it's Jose's fault Edwin left! Kinda! In a way. Because if he had just accepted that damn QO, Edwin would have known JB was coming back and would have signed on for 4/80. Thanks a lot, Jose. :(

I don't think a mutual option has ever been taken up by both sides. The very idea of a "mutual option" is contradictory in nature.

No. I don't think that would have happened.

Mutual options are when you're pretty much bidding against yourself to get a player signed. If the player has a bad year, you know they'll want to exercise it, if it's more than they might get on the market, but the team will decline their half, and if the player has a good year, and can get more on the market, he'll decline his half, and walk. They're kind of pointless unless a player really likes where he's at, and it's the only way that both sides will agree to a deal, where, if the player has a good year and wants to stay he'll exercise his portion and the team theirs. I'd rather see a vesting option, if they opted to not guarantee a 2nd year. Then he has something to work for if he thinks it's going to be a fair amount of money. Like some have mentioned there may or may not be a buyout, and giving a buyout on a mutual option, is just handing money away, since you might as well make it a team option, so you can either exercise it, or decline it and pay less. It might be a balancing of money where he might agree to less money this year, but anything next year in the form of the option will make up for it, or at least the buyout guarantees him what he might have been looking for this year, he'll just get it at the end of the year in one payment.

Granted, nothing is complete (as of me typing this) so that could be subject to change. If it stays one year with a mutual option, it might be the Jays being able to free up some payroll for this year, since I believe, unless I'm wrong, buyouts won't/don't count towards this year's payroll, at least not the beginning, and JB getting the total he wants for the year, with the ability to hit the market again next year, and try rolling the dice on a better deal if he has a good year, of course, depending on the amount, it might be where both sides are happy and keep him around, and he wants to stay. With him being able to retain 10-5 rights, the new CBA preventing him from being QO again, if he has a big year, and walks, the Jays get nothing other than, hey, we signed him back, had an option, we exercised it, but he walked away, making him the bad guy.

Will be interesting to see how things play out.
