thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Wow, unanimous vote for Rivera.
devo Verified Member Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 This Red Sox reporter doesn’t believe in saves or closers so is submitting a blank HoF ballot: I guess this contrarian **** changed his mind..
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Continuing the change towards quantity over quality. A reliever gets 100%, a guy that didn't have 2250 hits and just 300 HR's, a pitcher that didn't have much more than 2000 k's and a 3.40 ERA, and a Saber workhorse who ended up with an ERA not in the top 500 of all pitchers with 1000 IP. The times they are a changin'. Now to put a known steroid user in.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 I guess this contrarian **** changed his mind.. Or he got a f***load of reads and social media impressions and trolled the f*** out of all of you.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Wow, unanimous vote for Rivera. First time ever...
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 No idea how anyone can justify Wagner or McGriff over Scott Rolen McGriff argument would be just simply a better bat (134 wRC+ vs. 122 wRC+). If you are going to consider reliever it's own position...Billy is probably top 3 all-time. All-time in relievers is of course really just over the past 45 years. I am a big Rolen getting into the Hall supporter and I'd love to know if there is anyone who voted for Ozzie or more recently Vizquel and not him cause that would be a huge injustice but one of the best defenders of all time just isn't a sexy argument.

I agree on Wagner. I actually see the argument for him but you have to consider relievers their own special position. He had 2 less WAR than Hoffman in basically 3 less seasons. I probably keep him out but I don't think it's a travesty if he got in. McGriff I keep out. Miles better than Harold Baines but he just isn't there. If you let him in you should let guys like Dave Stieb in too.
leaffie Verified Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe was on xm radio tody, spouting off about not voting for Halladay. Didnt think he was a slam dunk for HOF and he was only voting for them. He must have seen every game that Haladay pitched against Boston, but didnt think he was good enough. That is worse than not voting at all.

I watched him do it on High Heat on MLBTV, I liked the topic at the end about Bonds, Clemens, and Ortiz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl7ESKvkshk Baseball talk starts at 2:15
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Oh yeah... Congratulations DOC on the induction to the Hall Of Fame!!! It was honour watching this man dissect teams apart.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Disappointing that Bonds and Clemens both ended up with only 59%.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 No idea how anyone can justify Wagner or McGriff over Scott Rolen He maxed out his 10 choices so I don't really see anything wrong with it. Ten defendable choices. It was McGriff's last kick at the can, Rolen has a lot longer to go. There are more factors to consider when voting than sorting the players by WAR and picking the top 10.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 I enjoy looking at the full list to see who got a pity vote. Polanco got two. Poor Vernon couldn't get any, not even from Richard Griffin.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 TSN played the Carpenter/Halladay piece again tonight on SC... who cut the onions? https://www.tsn.ca/mlb/video/in-his-own-words-chris-carpenter-remembers-doc~1592278

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 I thought Bonds and Clemens would get in some day. Now I don't think they do.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 I hope this isn't pretty or tacky of me but the Jays should be courting Halladay's family big time. Statements like this should he coming from the Jays not Phillies.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Can’t wait til their asses fall off the ballot You don't think the all time home run leader should be in the hall of fame along with a top 10 all time starter?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Can’t wait til their asses fall off the ballot Barry Bonds was a legit Hall of Famer back in 1993 when he was 180 pounds. Clemens would be in if he never pitched again after the Red Sox dumped him. When they took what they took, yeah it was kind of against the rules but nobody was checking and there was no explicit line in the sand like there was with Pete Rose and gambling and there still really isn't given the guys who got in. Bonds and Clemens were already legit superstar players and if you look at the money A-Rod got, f***, who wouldn't want six extra years of 8-digit contracts if they can extend their careers to age 42 instead of 36. If you want to punish Clemens and Bonds for what they did, I want to go back in time and give you a traffic ticket every time you went over the speed limit or did a rolling stop through a stop sign. Every. f***ing. Time.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Bonds not being a HOF is a joke.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 It's f***ing sad that writers and executives now s*** on the players that only 20 years ago were making them so much money after the baseball strike. They refuse to take responsibility that they had a part in the steroid era becoming what it was, and enabled players by handing out large contracts. Own the fact that most players took PEDs, and accept that it's part of your history, not pretend like it never happened and erase it from history like a s***** totalitarian regime would.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Didn't these same writers vote Bonds and Co. for MVP, Cy Young, etc. And now they're saying that without PEDs, Bonds would be worse than Harold Baines? TBF they mainly don’t vote for Bonds and Clemens for moral reasons, not talent. Still the wrong reasons IMO, but more justifiable.
