I almost hope the Orioles feel they screwed up with Arrietta and blow 200M to get him back now

They can't seem to convince any other SP to sign

LOL

Oh wow, Arrieta going back to Baltimore on a bad contract would be the best kind of full circle. Go for it Duquette, you won't even have to pay a posting fee!

Interesting that the Yankees have now traded their starting 2B and starting 3B. I wonder if they are heavily in on Machado, and what this says about Gleyber's recovery timeline.

They have Gleyber who should be able to take one of those spots, but they also have nice pieces to dangle: Gardner, Frazier, and Betances all look like longshots to start 2018 with their org, and their only real needs are SP5, 2B, and 3B. Between Gleyber and and those trade chips, they should be able to fill those spots.

You would think they'll at least want to keep Gleyber down to suppress his service time. They would take a .700 OPS and adequate defence from him in 2018, but they aren't going to give up a year of control, surely.

I don't think it's an easy decision. If they can get 2 wins from Torres for 550k, and that helps them win now while resetting their luxury tax, that might be well worth paying him $ a year earlier. I dunno what the math looks like, but they seem motivated to get under the tax this year.

My hunch would be that they plan to use Gleyber at 2B and pursue one of the big 3B options. Could see them having a lot of respect for Longoria.

Longoria

Machado

Donaldson

Moustakas

Could all potentially be had this off season though some are likely to stay put

Some of those teams won't want to trade with the Yankees though unless maybe the return is better than anyone else will give up

Jays might have some new infield options to trade for now.

MLBTR:

Orioles Reportedly Asking For Offers On Manny Machado

By Steve Adams | December 12, 2017 at 10:57am CDT

While it’s been reported that the Orioles are at least willing to listen to offers on Manny Machado, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic takes things a step further, reporting that the O’s have asked interested parties to make them offers for the star infielder (subscription required and highly recommended). The term “infielder” is of particular note, as Rosenthal also writes that Machado’s desire is to return to shortstop in 2018 whether he’s in Baltimore or with a new club.

Machado, 25, has long stood out as an on-paper trade candidate given his proximity to free agency and the Orioles’ lack of starting pitching. The O’s, who have been looking to add as many as three starters to their rotation this winter, will be hard-pressed to contend for an AL East title in 2018 (even more so in the wake of the Yankees’ acquisition of Giancarlo Stanton). With Machado set to hit the open market next winter in position to land a record-setting contract — assuming a healthy year, anything south of Stanton’s $325MM guarantee would seem to be a nonstarter — it’s difficult to envision him remaining in Baltimore. For the time being, MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects a $17.3MM salary for Machado next year after his final trip through the arbitration process.

The Orioles, per Rosenthal, are aiming to acquire two controllable young starters in any trade for Machado. That’s a lofty ask for a lot of teams, but a win-now club with an ample supply of touted but unproven pitching could look at that as an acceptable price to pay for a player that has been worth better than five wins per season, on average, over the past half decade (despite missing 80 games due to injury in 2014). Notably, Rosenthal adds that owner Peter Angelos does not want to trade with the division-rival Yankees.

Which likely means a Longoria trade is coming.. unless they're using Schimpf as MILB depth.

They traded for a guy who hit .158 last year and thus must be moving their franchise player? Did the trade of Gift Ngoepe also suggest the Jays were traded JD?

Jays aren't in payroll cutting or rebuilding mode like the Rays--Longoria is likely to be dealt soon, possibly this week, as the Rays want to get rid of his salary before he gets 10/5 rights and can block any trade out of Tampa, especially when the organization is trying to reduce a projected $98M+ payroll(according to Cot's) down to $60-70M (if not less). Moving Longoria's contract would help a lot--other options would be moving some of Odorizzi, Kiermaier, Ramos(unlikely), Colome, or even Brad Miller..

Gift Ngeope has options remaining and will likely be in Buffalo while Aledmys Diaz takes the backup 2B/SS job (as long as Travis/Tulo are healthy--though I expect the Jays to add another infielder as insurance).

This Schimpf deal is more to likely plug the huge gaping hole at 3B in Tampa after Longoria is dealt in the coming days (Cardinals? Angels? Yankees? Giants?).. you have to wonder if Tampa is giving the same ultimatum to Longoria as Jeter did to Stanton in Miami before he was dealt to the Yankees.

And trading for Schimpf has absolutely nothing to do with that.

The O's were obviously impressed by the Mark Trumbo colouring book they received last year - so there's always hope. Maybe Boras added some pop-ups this year - everyone loves pop-ups!

This. I legit believe Torres and Andujar will man 2nd and 3rd come April.

I think there's a decent chance they sign Todd Frazier back to play 3rd. I doubt he's going to get more than a 1 or 2 year deal. Playing in the NYY lineup would be a great way to rebuild value on a 1 yr deal

I don't think there's a high likelihood he opts out at all. Highly doubt he does better than 7/218 + a NTC at age 31.

Also, his agent has said as much:

If he hits 50 hrs for 3 or 4 years straight, he'll opt out faster than you can blink.

If his seasons are mere really good, then yeah he stays in.

Orioles fans are starting to sink into despair I suspect

Living in Baltimore probably pushed them 90% of the way to despair to begin with.

2/18 for Tommy Hunter? WTF is up with the relief market right now? At this rate we'll be drafting relievers and signing starters to FA contracts.

Phils will be spending almost $20M a year on Tommy Hunter and Pat Neshek lol

Oh s***

Arte Moreno may have just spent on yet ANOTHER bad deal.. if Ohtani needs TJS, Angels might want to start entertaining offers on Trout--he's not going to want to keep playing for a losing club much longer, especially with his free agency only 3 years away.. where he could absolutely smash free agent contract records.

A pre-emptive TJ wouldn't happen, but that is what I would want as the AA FO. He's almost ready for the start of 2019 that way. You still have oodles of cheap control.

Ohtani's right arm could literally be gone and the $20M posting fee is still a great deal.
