I think you can test this yourself.

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/165096680/billy-burns-leads-statcast-speed-rankings/

The slowest competitive home to 1st times in 2015 were:

394. Wilson Ramos, RH, 4.89 seconds

395. Albert Pujols, RH, 4.92 seconds

396. Michael Morse, RH, 4.94 seconds

397 (tie). Billy Butler, RH, 4.95 seconds

397 (tie). Curt Casali, RH, 4.95 seconds

Fastest

1. Burns, LH, 3.85 seconds

2. Gordon, LH, 3.91 seconds

3. Hamilton, LH, 3.95 seconds

4. Delino DeShields, RH, 3.96 seconds

5 (tie). Jose Altuve, RH, 3.98 seconds

5 (tie). Ichiro Suzuki, LH, 3.98 seconds (at 41 years old!)

So just head to a nearby park, map out 90 feet distance and get someone to time you. Also record it and post the video on here so we can be sure that your distance and stopwatch person were both accurate.

TIL Michael Morse and Billy Butler still played in the MLB.

Well Butler isn't and Morse is done for the year with a concussion. Ergo the rankings being from 2015.

In a lot of ways, his next season was even more impressive. 32.4% walk rate, 7.7% k rate (giving him an absurd .582 obp).

He was also 37 that year. At age 39 he posted an even better 37.6% walk rate, 6.6% k rate, giving himself an even more absurd .609 OBP, 233 wRC+. He was intentionally walked 120 that year (after only being walked 35 times when he hit 73 HRs). Let that sink in for a second.

Maybin to the Astros. Reports saying that they've also kept in touch with the Tigers about Verlander.

I wouldn't be opposed to us picking up Verlander, as long as it's a salary dump and we don't have to include a good prospect too. He's expensive, but he eats innings and is still pretty good (just not elite anymore). It is worth noting that his fastball velocity has actually ticked up this year too, the highest it's been since 2011. He'd look really good alongside Stro and Sanchez in the rotation next year.

Is the uptick in velocity because they are measuring velocity differently now? I'm still extremely unclear on how that's been dealt with.

Verlander has 3 WAR this year - same as Stro. I think he'd be a great addition to any team that could afford to add him. Owed $56M on a 2 year committement for his age 35 and 36 year seasons? That's not bad if it could put you over the top. He only has to give you about 6 WAR and you're into surplus value.

Verlander has a full no trade clause which complicates things a bit.

Verdugo being called up to the Dodgers. Mejia being called up to the Indians. Fun times for top prospects.

That's odd, he's said he doesn't want to go to Houston. God knows why?

We need it on video for sure. My 40 time was 5.05 last time I tried. Not sure how that translates. An OF might throw me (or BTS) out because they'd be playing in so much but even still it's not like we'd be stinging it in. We need to set up a blue jays pitching staff vs. The BJMB competition.

Hurl would slide into first because of the dramatics.

I have a friend who swears he was ripping it up in his adult league and swears he could hit .250 in the big leagues if he quit and practiced every day. I tried telling him how stupid that was but he is convinced.

No, while I don't know what Hurl looks like, he's not going to be one of the fastest guys in the MLB. You're ignoring that his 40yd time didn't include swinging a bat and having to straighten out to run.

I took that into consideration. Maybe I didnt put enough emphasis on it. You also have to remember those quoted figures are a competitive average. Billy Hamilton had a 3.95 average but a 3.52 fastest time.

I think you might be underestimating Hurl considering the fastest man in the history of the planet ran 40 in 3.97 and the average wide receiver at the combine is 4.55.

Yeah he seems like a good trade candidate. Overpaid so shouldn't cost top prospects to acquire, and jays have the financial resources to absorb his entire contract to limit the prospects they would have to trade. Just take the whole salary and give them some s*** and maybe they'll take it over having to eat up a portion of the remaining salary. I'd do it. It's only two more years and the Jays have nothing in the minors that is beating down the door for a rotation spot.

Astros are gonna get at least $10 million in cash from the Tigers too. Good deal. A pitcher of Verlanders calibre is easily worth ~$20 million a year.

Gonna be weird seeing JV in a non-Tigers uniform though. He was so synonymous with that team.
