New "Players weekend" details announced

If no player has their twitter handle (complete with @ sign) on there, I'd be shocked.

Steve Pearce - the only Blue Jay to go NOT go with a nickname

I like that somehow

Most of the nicknames feel like "I'll just put what Gibby calls me"

Apparantly Devon Travis and Luke Maile are also both nicknamed "Mailes"

it's a 23 man roster with Luke Maile taking two roles

I'll ignore the comment about the defense but thank god Jay Bruce is bringing professionalism to the Indians' pennant chase. Showing up on time for the team bus is really going to put them over the edge.

I will say, this is one area I like the Jays financial flexibility

We've spent a bit more in salaries on trades but have helped stock the farm system while doing so

From August 25-27, the first annual Players’ Weekend will be held. While the three days are sure to contain a few surprises, the most intriguing aspect of the festivities has already been revealed—players will have the option to wear a nickname on the back of their jerseys, XFL-style. (FYI: Yasiel Puig won’t go as “He Hate Me,” an incredibly disappointing development.) Whether you think it’s a fun change of direction or a disgrace to the game, it certainly is worth checking out the choices of some of the game’s biggest names.

This player's weekend thing is really dumb IMO.

I thought so at first but it's getting a lot of buzz on twitter and from mainstream media outlets. Baseball needs to do a better job of marketing the sport as a nationwide sport instead of just having regional strongholds everywhere. I think this is helping a little bit.

That's because you're old and no fun. It's just a silly promotion that lets players have more personality and allows the league to sell more jerseys.

Putting nicknames on the back of an ugly jersey isn't fun - nor does it show any personality. I'm supposed to be impressed by their ability to come up with unique nicknames? That appeals to people? People are stupid.

Full disclosure that I've done zero research on this, but didn't this come as a request from the PA?

Shut up Goodell

Why stop with jersey's - They should be allowed to wear personalized hats on the field too. Martin can wear a toque, Stro can wear one of his small man syndrome hats, Pillar can wear a hipster hat, Smoak can wear a lumberjack hat, Biagini can wear a joker hat - it will be EPIC!!!

I will feel like I know the Jays players better and that will make me like baseball better. Young people hate rules and tradition, so they will probably start following the game immediately.

The whole thing is kinda corny for sure, but if it helps get a few more kids interested then so be it.

I'm way more bothered by the Jays wearing red every Sunday than the nickname jerseys.

Rhys Hoskins promoted by the Phillies, they're trying him in LF.

took them long enough. God forbid he takes playing time from Tommy f'n Joseph

I hate the red uni's.

I thought I hear the players weekend same from the PA - like these excessively rich players need more freedom in their jobs or some s***. Maybe that's why I have a distaste for it (outside of the corny/cringiness of bad nicknames and ugly jerseys).

I think I read somewhere that it's some kind of charity event. The jerseys will be auctioned off afterwards for every player in the league.
