Dirty/cheapshot or within the rules? I see the right and wrong on this play, but it just happens so fast. Seriously, I can't make up my mind on this, they're both at fault. Rizzo was provided a clear lane to get to home. He doesn't even slide - instead, it appears he deliberately tries to make contact with the catcher who had caught the ball and was diving over to make a tag. I think Rizzo should be tossed. IMO, the new rules were correctly put in place to create tag plays at home like they typically occur at second and third base (not with the old breaking up a double play slide, but say when you're trying to steal second). If someone did that to a second baseman on a steal attempt, it would clear the benches and the runner would be toss (IMO). Edited June 20, 2017 by Brownie19
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Exactly I'm sure it's very hard for these guys to turn that instinct off And I can just imagine the adrenaline when you round 3B knowing the outfielder is gunning for you... I'd disagree and point to the fact that players removed the instinct of a take-out slide at 2nd base remarkably fast (seriously - when was the last time we saw an illegal slide at 2nd base???? It was all the rage for like a month or two last year, but that was it).

I can't speak to the legality of the play because the rule is confusing, but this is not a dirty play. A runner has no requirement to avoid contact within the running lane to any base or home plate when the fielder has the ball. Here's a classic example: Belle was later punished for throwing elbows but not for the contact.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I am going to say Rizzo is dumb... He could have been safe had he slide to the outside part of the plate. Instead he went to the other side of the place and basically just gave them the out.

Here's a classic example: Belle was later punished for throwing elbows but not for the contact. While the player may not have a requirement to avoid contact - efforts to increase the force or amount of contact is almost essentially what creates a "dirty" play. Much like Belle threw his elbows up, Rizzo hurled his body into a catcher on his knees who was lunging to tag him. That's like saying Rizzo could have gone with the flying drop kick and it wouldn't have been dirty because he has no responsibility to avoid contact within the running lane. That's BS.

Hedges wasn't even blocking the plate, so I'm not sure how it could be argued that he was in the way. Hedges was on the inside of the baseline the entire time and Rizzo changed direction to hit him when he had a clear path to the plate. Rizzo is 100% at fault IMO

There is absolutely no debate. Rizzo violated the rules and it was a dirty play (he changes direction to then drive both his knees into Hedges while completely avoiding the plate - and the baseline if keggy is reading). I'm not 100% sure what the ruling on that s*** is though. Would he simply have been called out if he was ruled safe on the field? or should he have been kicked out of the game? subject to suspension for intent to injure?

No, you are technically right that a runner is not required to avoid contact... but the catcher has to be blocking the plate or blocking the runners path to the plate in order for contact to be allowed. If the catcher isn't blocking the plate or the path... no contact is allowed. Not sure what is confusing about that Rizzo changed direction from his clear path on the outside of the baselind in order to collide with Hedges, who was on the inside of the baseline.

I don't think it was malicious. Reckless would be my description
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I dispute the word dirty... I don't think it was malicious. Reckless would be my description Looks like he made a conscious decision to change direction to create contact - never sliding - instead leading with his knees. That looks pretty dirty IMO. Maybe it all happens so fast that it's a reaction thing. I just don't get why he thought to move from the outside of the baseline to the inside of the baseline (something you rarely do - only when the catch has to move up the line to catch the ball).
