BTS Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 No, I am annoyed at the fact that there seems to be no killer instinct with Shatkins. Toronto generally does have to overpay to get guys to come here, so at this point if there is a player they want then yes I think they have to go a bit over the top to get them. There is after all no salary cap in MLB, just the one that ownership and management imposes, which Atkins keeps saying $ is not an issue to fill their needs. We should be in on things like going after a Kenly Jansen, because at this point if you acquire a guy like that you know when the game hits the 8th inning it is over with him and Osuna, and the other team knows it is over too. I don't think it is fair to this fanbase if we take a step back this coming season. I feel like a number of the people here either were too young to remember or not born when the Jays won their 2 Championships, because if they had experienced the euphoria of those victories and understood what it was like to see their team win a World Series they would understand that the opportunity in front of us the next couple of seasons is not something to be squandered. 1 World Series victory would be worth having to start over and build up for the next several seasons. Anyone who says otherwise has never experienced this team winning one before. You seem to be under the impression that Mark Shapiro sets payroll. Let me clear that up for you: Mark Shapiro does not set payroll.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I remember reading that the 5M was under the 2016 budget, and he basically has no salary in 2017, and multiple other posters also remember reading it. Yup, the Padres are paying for the remainder of Upton's contract entirely next year.

Ok so I'm not the only one. I really don't know what is correct to be honest, but I suspect he's league min for 2017.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Well, explain that... http://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-to...lue-jays-info/ I've provided Davidi's article plus RR "Upton is due the roughly third remaining on his $15.45 million salary this year plus another $16.45 million in 2017, and the Padres will reportedly cover $17 million of that." This doesn't preclude them from putting the 5M on the 2016 books, though the assumption from people like rr would be that they wouldn't do that. I've been trying to find where a bunch of people heard/read that this was the case, but I can't now.

Let me clear that up for you: Mark Shapiro does not set payroll. I am not under the impression that Shapiro sets payroll. Obviously ownership sets the payroll, but Atkins has stated on more than one occasion that $$$ is not an issue to fill their needs. If this is true then that implies ownership will pony up to put a WS calibre team on the field, thus it would be Shapiro/Atkins who are not willing to spend that money. People can say what they want about teams like the Yankees over spending on FA over the last couple of decades. They also have 5 World Series victories since our las one, and the Red Sox have 3. The thing with spending big money on Free Agents is that you can field a winning team, while still stocking your cupboards with prospects.
jerb Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 OF Melvin Upton Jr., $1 million (San Diego covers the rest of his $17.05 million salary). This article says the Jays are paying $1 million for Upton this year: http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-winter-primer-what-comes-next-after-a-solid-run/
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 How did the Upton contract situation become so unclear lol? He's making peanuts this year.

Saying that money is not preventing them from filing their needs does not mean that the money is endless. They have a budget. Payroll will almost certainly be within a few million dollars of that budget. What is it you think is happening here? Rogers is all 'blank check boys' and Shapiro just gives them a 'nah keep your money I'm good'?

I don't know, someone's f***ed up. http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/payroll/2016/ So in the end our projected payroll is just north of 163 million.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Where is this reported? I thought Shi said its only 1M this year the rest was last year. All the initial reports said this. But every payroll site has SD paying $12.050 M this year.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 All the initial reports said this. But every payroll site has SD paying $12.050 M this year. I think some of the 5M they gave last year is going towards his 2017 salary.

Superdood Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 It's December 8th. Hardly time to panic about the roster at this point imo, tons of time to improve. Personally i'm happy they didn't spend a fortune on Fowler. Just gotta have faith in the process.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Rogers should be willing to take payroll just below the luxury tax. The last couple years had to have shown them that winning makes them money. They gained hundreds of thousand new fans and more importantly viewers. If this off season continues to be a failure those new casual fans will disappear as fast as they appeared. To me it's mind boggling they don't take payroll to the max without paying any luxury tax. If I recall correctly, even earnings and the share price grew with the playoff runs.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I think some of the 5M they gave last year is going towards his 2017 salary. Unusual for COTs as when they don't know they put "estimated at". I always wondered how the money in these deals was transferred. I know I get the Raptor 905's pay stubs and there is a player who gets his paycheque from his previous team, who he hasn't played for in a long time. In baseball is it a lump sum payment as that is worth so much more than spreading it out directly to the player. Does it go from team to team on a bi-weekly?
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Lot's of whining here, I wanted Fowler as much as anyone but not on a blank cheque. The Cards were simply in a better position to offer him big money, we can't expect to land every free agent on our wish list. Complain if you don't like the roster mid season, for now it's just hot air.

A lot of fans hated last off-season but once the dome opens fans come flying out.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Rogers suuucks We don't even know what the Jays final offer was. You need to remember that the Cards also could offer him the chance to stay in CF. The Jays very well could have been offering a similar or even greater deal in the end, and he simply chose St Louis - we can't blame Rogers or our management for that. You have to analyze what a guy is worth to the team, and set a limit on what you're willing to spend. If he simply wants to be somewhere else (and for a perfectly fair reason), you can't just keep throwing money and/or term at him until he changes his mind.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Can we atleast see what Fowler signed for before we start criticizing? I'm as bummed as anybody we didn't land him. But I don't exactly know if I'd like the idea of signing him for 5 years $90 million + a draft pick.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 You guys really want Fowler for 5 years at $18 per??? And lose a draft pick in the process?? Yeah no thanks give me Bautista at 3 years $16M per and watch Bautista put up a better OPS and offence in general across the 3 years, just keep him off the field
