saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 You guys really want Fowler for 5 years at $18 per??? And lose a draft pick in the process?? Yeah no thanks give me Bautista at 3 years $16M per and watch Bautista put up a better OPS and offence in general across the 3 years, just keep him off the field we still have to get bautista....there's no guarantee of that either.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I Love this plan, one problem....how do you keep Jose off the field after signing Morales? You could have him rotate with Pearce. Basically when Stroman and Sanchez start have Pearce play 1st (since he's really good there) and when Estrada and Happ pitch have Pearce play the OF and JB at 1st. Even with the terrible defense Jose can very well be a 3 win player next year.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I'm fine with Jose and his s***** defence and now garbage arm in left if we can find a good right fielder. Any ideas on any right fielders that might be available, and not Jay Bruce, I mean someone who can play defence.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I Love this plan, one problem....how do you keep Jose off the field after signing Morales? Morales is probably going to have to start at least 60 games at 1B. f*** me.

Honest question as I have no idea, is Pearce an above average outfielder, or can he simply play there and be passable?

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I honestly believe that Bautista and EE are definitely not coming back.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Maybe he'll surprise us like Edwin did this year. Possibly, but not likely. An outfielder who can actually play in the outfield regularly is needed, and left handed. Moss outside of a trade has to be the best option right now.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 If Bautista isn't an option I'd sign both Moss and Saunders. We really need 2 OF unless you want friggen Zeke in the startling lineup.

Had a wRC+ of 114 with a .236 BABIP vs RHP. Thats fantastic. He might strike out a lot but only 23% GB so he does damage when he does makes contact. Rogers Centre and the AL East should be great for him.

He's also at least an average corner defender, and as you say, hits from the left side, which makes him a good fit with Upton and Pearce in the fold.

I think he also had a wRC+ in the 140 range in high leverage situations.

I'm probably not as confident in the defence as you but I think the bat makes up for it. He should rake vs RHP.

Ray Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Why are people so adamant that Bautista won't be coming back? Give him $50 million over 3 years with an opt-out after the 1st year. I bet you he'll be all over that. Especially when there's rumors EE will be getting $60-$70 million. Sign him, hope he doesn't get injured and puts up another 2014-2015 season. If he does, his s***** defense will be worth it. And there's ways around putting him in RF everyday now that we have Pearce and Morales.

There seems to be some sort of elephant in the room among the media regarding Bautista and the FO that they don't see eye to eye or something. Davidi is one of the most connected people and he said the odds were basically zero today on the radio.

Bautista as the regular first baseman is a possibility, but that would mean Pearce would be an outfield regular. The line up diversity was already crippled with the Morales signing.

Davidi is one of the most connected people and he said the odds were basically zero today on the radio. I mean, I knew Bautista never liked the management, but this is business. I'm sure when it comes down to it, he'll choose money over management he doesn't like. It wasn't long ago that Bautista's agent was going around saying he'd be very interested in returning to Toronto. Plus he's running out of options now. Yankees, Astros, Red Sox, Mets, all seemed to have filled their needs. Give him a good enough offer and I guarantee you he'll look past the "s***** management" he doesn't like.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Shatkins may have no choice but to pull the trigger on a trade for a controllable or reasonably priced outfielder. Easier said than done, but I believe Shapiro has something up his sleeve.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 You seem to focus a lot on K-rate. Why does it matter? Whiffing was one of our largest issues last season and, from what I had heard earlier in November, signing contact oriented players was one of the proposed solutions to that. Sure, he could mash in the RC, but, personally, I would rather sign Bautista and trade for Dyson so we'd have power (Bautista) but plenty of contact and OBP (Bautista and Dyson).
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Pay up on a 1 year deal and stick him back in RF. That would be last resort. The beauty of it is that Shatkins can be patient looking for a better alternative because Bautista will still be available in February.

I don't understand why you're looking at it that way. The offense was good last year. They had a lot of good hitters that strike out a lot. The offense was fine, and those hitters are maximizing their skills in the best way they can. If you can improve the offense, you do it. That could come via a 5% K guy or a 30% K guy. Is the team tangibly better off with Nori Aoki than with Brandon Moss? Not likely.

They should hit more singles instead
