Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Goodbye AL East for the next few years Yeah, deja vu all over again from 2013!
Ray Verified Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Time to steal Adam Eaton. Please.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Yeah but it doesnt work like that though. Mike Trout is the best player in the world but I wouldnt say he is worth 9x9x3= 243 mill over 3 seasons. He would be on the Free Agent Market...
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 I must learn to see the world as you do. Come, give me your eyes. Its a good add to be sure. They just lost 4 WAR from Papi retiring and gained 5(?) with Sale. Not saying this is good news, but those saying 'may as well pack it up now' seem like they are over-reacting to me.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Time to steal Adam Eaton. Yep let's get him.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Well at least the Blue Jays should have one of the best lineups vs LHP in the majors. Pearce Donaldson Tulo Morales Martin Upton Thats a lot of lefty mashers.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Lol at al central WhiteSox Twins Royals Tigers Indians pretty much a lock too http://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server4800/0f122/products/1269/images/1399/classicpins_2198_582171546__64593.1329965926.380.400.jpg?c=2

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Yep let's get him. Eaton in RF, Fowler in LF, and go cheap on the pen. I'm down.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Well at least the Blue Jays should have one of the best lineups vs LHP in the majors. Pearce Donaldson Tulo Morales Martin Upton Thats a lot of lefty mashers. even with Bautista and Edwin we couldn't do much against him.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 I would advise against any team paying Trout $81M a year. I don't think you will compete while doing that.

Well I'm seeing it that the Sox are still unfinished and still already better than they were exiting last season. They still have two or three (3B, 1B/DH) impact bat positions to fill (maybe only one if Pablo bounces back at all).

I don't see how that means that the 'everyone else has no chance' narrative is correct.
metafour Verified Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 He would be on the Free Agent Market... The $/WAR model does not work perfectly in free agency because there are market restrictions and realities that take precedent. Trout may be "worth" $75 million a year, but that doesn't mean that anyone would pay him anywhere near that on the open market even if he magically became a free agent tomorrow. The max he'd get is something like ~$40 million a year. Its a fun thing to look at, but it doesn't work in actual real life.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Sale and Price...not many have a better 1-2 punch than that Plus the 2016 AL Cy Young winner at #3? Yikes!
ChrisS Verified Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 That's exactly how it works. That's what Trout is worth. He's good. There is sort of a curve relating WAR to $$ they actually get at the higher end. Donaldson could put up another 7 win season but in 2019 noone is going to give him a 5 year deal worth 300 mill, same with Trout at 500 mill for 6 years...

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 I would advise against any team paying Trout $81M a year. I don't think you will compete while doing that. 1) You would probably never project anyone to put up 9 WAR, even Mike Trout. 2) You certainly wouldn't project that each year over the course of the contract, which is how you arrive at an AAV.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 As a whole I think our pitching is still better than the Red Sox.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 This sucks pretty hard but at least Dumbrowski's war chest is getting smaller, pls get Fowler.
ChrisS Verified Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 What he's worth and what he'll get paid are 2 different things. The context of the original post was what the Boston Red Sox actually paid to get Chris Sale

I wouldn't suggest any team spend $63M a year on Mike Trout. I don't think you can win doing that... The exact number is irrelevant. *edit... maybe the Dodgers or some other super high payroll team MIGHT be able to win paying a single player 63M a year.

The exact number is irrelevant. Yes, there is a practical limit based on payroll restrictions. We are discussing theoretical value though.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 The context of the original post was what the Boston Red Sox actually paid to get Chris Sale Actually we don't really know what they paid to get Chris Sale. We know what they paid to get Moncada, but we don't know what he'll be worth.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 As a whole I think our pitching is still better than the Red Sox. You're f***ing nuts.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 The context of the original post was what the Boston Red Sox actually paid to get Chris Sale Yep - I get that. $100M for 3 years....$33M a year. He's worth about $135M....so he's worth more than they paid to get him.....this is essentially proving my point Chris.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 As a whole I think our pitching is still better than the Red Sox. lmao
ChrisS Verified Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Yes, there is a practical limit based on payroll restrictions. We are discussing theoretical value though. My mistake, I should have been more clear but we were discussing the actual cost paid by the Red Sox. I am aware of the theoretical value that someone like Mike Trout has under a $/WAR model.
