BTS Community Moderator Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 He's younger and better than Tanaka, who got a 155M guarantee three years ago. He'd get Price/Greinke money.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Author Posted November 29, 2016 would an al team let him hit is the interesting question.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 The Jays will be front runners for sure.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Author Posted November 29, 2016 it's also not a very original one. and yet the answer to the question likely has a wide spectrum of opinions, which makes it interesting if not original.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Author Posted November 29, 2016 The Jays will be front runners for sure. I bet the Jays would put a very solid offer in place that would likely finish in 14th place in the bidding process

TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 I think the more interesting question is what would Fantasy sites do if a team lets him hit. CBS fantasy already decided that if he's a two way player in the majors they would have a pitching Otani, and hitting Otani. Setting up the Otani for Otani trade.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 and yet the answer to the question likely has a wide spectrum of opinions, which makes it interesting if not original. A wide spectrum? He's said he wants to bat... there isn't much left after that. He's going to hit.

If that's the case, might as well do the same for every pitcher too. Seems silly to make an Otani exception. Sometimes Hitter MadBum might be a better last minute play for HRs than any stockpiled bench infielders.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 Seems silly to make an Otani exception. I think they just went that way because it's technically expedient. It's a shame too because they missed out on an opportunity to create a potential unprecedented fantasy super player.

Word is that he won't come over if they don't let him hit. So if that stance doesn't change a team might have to. He's only been pitching once a week there though. Teams will be concerned with the additional pitching workload and hitting...it actually will be an interesting negotiation.

It would be awesome to see a team get nuts and give him a chance to platoon in the OF as well as pitch every fifth day. But that type of creative roster management isn't really seen with $200M investments and high payroll teams. And by all accounts Otani seems to be a pitcher first and a hitter second... so teams will invest in the arm and protect it accordingly. If Otani was a lesser talent - some intriguing back end SP with some hitting pop - maybe you'd see a team like Oakland or Tampa Bay try it out.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 Considering this is your reasoning for not signing Thames it's a pretty bad one! Both on Term, money and laughability!!! Jays are not ever nore will they even be in the Race! One word for you... Rogers, Two words for ya... Suxx it!!! Lol
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 How many teams in the NL have the $$$ for him? Cubs and Mets?
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 What do his salary prospects in Japan look like? I imagine his concern for hitting will conspicuously vanish when his American paycheck will give him enough money to swim in.

It's a shame too because they missed out on an opportunity to create a potential unprecedented fantasy super player. Seems like they could make him a SP/OF or whatever and have only his pitching stats count if he's slotted in your SP and hitting if he's in the OF. I dunno how overpowered that would make him, though. I guess we can all hope that he sucks at hitting to make this point moot.

I have limited fantasy experience, but if he's as quality at both jobs as he seems, he'd be like a cheat code in a video game. Maybe add an option on lineup sheets that offers the removal of one position from accumulating offensive numbers and allowing those numbers to scored to a pitching slot for that day's games. Obviously this could only benefit teams with NL pitchers, but it's such a negligible benefit that it wouldn't be worth any thought when building a team... until a dude like Otani comes around. That seems unfair but it's not really because the ideal form of Otoni is a real life cheat code anyway.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 could make him two players, Otani the PS and Otani the OF/HD. If you want to carry him twice and get the hitting you can? Would be weird, but its a weird circumstance.

Would be weird, but its a weird circumstance. That's just so inelegant though. I thought about it and as long as this doesn't make him head and shoulders the best player in the game, SP/OF would work fine. Then, you could apply that to any pitcher that gains positional availability, like Travis Wood. He won't be better than Trout or Harper. So I'd just treat his multi position eligibility as a skill.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 Most likely fit would be in the AL as a SPer and part-time DH, or in the NL as a SPer and pinch hitter.

Laika Community Moderator Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 If he was even a platoon quality OF it would be cheat codes in the DDL. Essentially, the owner would have an expanded roster; the value of having one more roster spot is pretty high. I'm not really sure if splitting him into two commodities is any better though. I think Boxy is right. Some players just have specific skills that make them f***ing awesome in fantasy baseball.
