burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Yep, I got to wonder with that many stars it could work against a few of them if teams overspend early on. At the same time a lot of teams will have a lot of holes because of the players they are losing to FA.
Gary Verified Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 2020 Martin, 2019 Rogers might have to bite the bullet for a year or two if they want to get a deal done with JD in 2018.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Rogers might have to bite the bullet for a year or two if they want to get a deal done with JD in 2018. they can make a deal with JD if they don't sign EE long term
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Oh f*** I just threw up Moving Tulo last offseason was the move they should have made, said it 50x
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Moving Tulo last offseason was the move they should have made, said it 50x Tulo will get paid 20 mil for his age 32, 33 and 34 seasons and then 15 and 14 mil for his 35 and 36 seasons. That's pretty reasonable and tulo has another 5 win season in him. If moving tulo is such a wise move then how do you justify giving Donaldson 7 or 8 years at 200 plus million when his first year would be his age 33 season

Simply pointing out that if EE is signed multi year there is no way JD gets signed. Like everything else, re-signing JD is a business decision to be made at the time. Highly unlikely Tulo has a 5 win season in him... he will most likely range from 2 to 3 war over the remainder of the contract, maybe dipping below 2 in the last few.

There is no way we extend Donaldson whether we sign ee or not. If we sign ee or comparable talent or trade for talent we can be post season teams instead of 84 win teams wasting the opportunity of having one of the leagues best players for the next 2 years. I highly disagree with your opinion on tulo. He's going to be great next year

I'm more positive than most. As far as Donaldson goes price got 7 217. Someone is going to offer Donaldson stupid money. Do you think shatkins seem like the type that will take the risk in years and dollars that it will take to sign Donaldson? They aren't risk takers.

The probability is low the Jays will be the winning bidder competing against all other MLB teams for JD's services. But I'm not going to be you and say it won't happen. Shatkins has already said moving from a small market team like Cleveland to a large market like Toronto changes his calculus. It's too early for you to be so definitive that JD will not be re-signed long term by the Jays.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I can't see the Jays re-signing JD. He's gonna get $200M+. No way do I see Rogers committing that kind of money for that many years. Remember the 5 year max rule? I'm still waiting for evidence that it's not still in effect. I want to be wrong about that, but I'm not sure I am. I'll just sit and wait and see what happens though.

While Rogers has to sign off on big deals its the FO that is going to decide who gets what money. Rogers just gives them a payroll number, and the FO decides who gets what. If the Jays signed Bryce Harper hypothetically for 250 Million it'd be good value so why would Rogers step in and axe the deal?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I'm just glad he never scratched his butt when he was rounding the bases or they would have sold shirts with hemorrhoids on them. Hemorrhoids, are neither an STD or contagious. Fail.

Different circumstances as it's only $23M and he's only 23, but still.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Fair enough. I will hold out hope that Toronto can compete with everyone else when it comes time to signing grade A FA's.

The real question is SHOULD you ever give out deals of more than 5 years to anyone in their 30s
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 If you want to extend guys long term it only seems smart to start those deals during the arbitration years to buy out some free agency years. Those guys are usually mid 20s of course and they might actually be worth their 7-8 year deal. It gives the player some long term stability and it helps the team maintain a player they might lose it they wait until they're free agents If you're Baltimore you consider that with Machado right now for example. But he's 6 years younger than Donaldson.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 they can make a deal with JD if they don't sign EE long term I suspect money will be the main incentive for Donaldson to resign with the Jays BUT closely followed by a competitive team. If the Jays takes a few steps back competitively then Donaldson is 100% gone......which I guess it means he's 100% gone!
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 My thoughts are if you are going to pony up more then 4/80 for Edwin then you might as well go after Fowler who likely brings more to the table and probably not for that much more. Likely 5/120 or so
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I'd much rather have EE at 4/90 than Fowler at 5/120 and it's not particularly close.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 (edited) My thoughts are if you are going to pony up more then 4/80 for Edwin then you might as well go after Fowler who likely brings more to the table and probably not for that much more. Likely 5/120 or so I tend to agree. You give up a draft pick for Fowler, but you'd get one back from letting EE go. He's a top of the order switch hitter with some pop, good base runner, good approach at the plate. He won't repeat the BsR value he posted last year - and it will drop over the next 4/5 years, but he's been a 120 wRC+ hitter for awhile now and his versatile game means his floor should be pretty high. There's a chance that if you put Fowler in RF, his defensive value spikes like it did went the White Sox put Eaton in RF. Fowler + Pillar + LF is going to be a really good defensive outfield. He's basically exactly the type of player the FO said they wanted to add when this offseason started. I call comes down to price. I'm don't love giving Fowler a 5th year or more than $20M AAV. If Fowler costs 5/120, I think I'd prefer Cespedes (who I expect to get 5/125). I think Fowler ends up closer to 4/90 - in which case I prefer him to EE quite a bit... To be honest - I kind of hate all the FA's. There's such a high probability that these contracts suck and the players immediately start declining. We already have the burden of Martin and Tulo. I'm not sure this is the time to pile on!

Likely 5/120 or so 5/120 for Fowler would be a nightmare. Plus a 1st rd pick? I'd pass on that.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 (edited) getting EE or any free agent now should be significant given the fact that the competition is going to be extremely high in 2018 and 2019. The Yankees could and probably will spend money, but if they don't they will have less than 100 million committed for 2018 and they can spend up to 250 million. The phillies, which seem to be the forgotten team literally have almost no money committed for 2018 and beyond and they have the ability to spend close to 200 million. The phillies are just biding their time waiting for the 2018 and 2019 free agent classes and they are going to spend like drunken sailors. The upcoming off season's are going to be fun with the talent available and the dollars available. I don't see the Jays being big players in the next couple years.
