getting EE or any free agent now should be significant given the fact that the competition is going to be extremely high in 2018 and 2019. The Yankees could and probably will spend money, but if they don't they will have less than 100 million committed for 108 and they can spend up to 250 million. The phillies, which seem to be the forgotten team literally have almost no money committed for 2018 and beyond and they have the ability to spend close to 200 million. The phillies are just biding their time waiting for the 2018 and 2019 free agent classes and they are going to spend like drunken sailors. The upcoming off season's are going to be fun with the talent available and the dollars available. I don't see the Jays being big players in the next couple years.

That's probably a good thing given the history of massive FA signings.

I wonder if a lot of teams are thinking along the same lines. Lay low this year and save their money for the glut of FAs in 2018. If so, then guys like Edwin might not get the fat contract everyone expects.

I'd much rather have EE at 4/90 than Fowler at 5/120 and it's not particularly close.

Agreed. 5/120 for Fowler is laughable

My thoughts are if you are going to pony up more then 4/80 for Edwin then you might as well go after Fowler who likely brings more to the table and probably not for that much more. Likely 5/120 or so

Fowler at 5/120 that seems like a lot. I would hope that we switch to Cespedes. We need an OFer right now and cespedes is also 31 years old vs EE who will be 34 in a couple of months.

I wouldn't give Fowler or Cespedes 5 year deals. Neither are good enough to justify that type of commitment. They can only demand these type of deals because the FA class is so bad.

Cespedes is really good. Probably a 4-win player is he's not miscast as a CF.

Yeah honestly, if we're serious about Fowler, I don't know why we wouldn't be in on Cespedes. I would love to get Yo and just plunk him in RF where be belongs. I would give him up to 5/$135M.

People seem to have narrowly framed this problem as "we need a leadoff hitter/OBP type OF"... well no, actually we just need a good player.

Agreed. Cespedes would be a better signing than EE would have ever been. He fills more of a need and has 6+ win potential in RF. The fact that he's younger would make it easier to stomach a 5 year deal ~25M AAV

If Fowler costs 5/120, I think I'd prefer Cespedes (who I expect to get 5/125).

I think Fowler ends up closer to 4/90 - in which case I prefer him to EE quite a bit...

To be honest - I kind of hate all the FA's. There's such a high probability that these contracts suck and the players immediately start declining. We already have the burden of Martin and Tulo. I'm not sure this is the time to pile on!

Even at equal money I will still take Edwin over Fowler. I'll take the over on his projections while noting that if I'm taking a 4 year gamble on one of them give me the elite power hitter over the corner outfielder.

Cespedes just costs money. Eaton is controlled by a dumb front office.

120-125M plus a first round pick. Eaton will cost 3 of our better prospects if not more.

Well trading prospects for Eaton is a no-brainer for me. He has 5/39M left for his prime seasons. If you can't trade prospects for Eaton then who can you trade them for?

Like I said, CWS is dumb. They won't get what he's worth.

I admit Cespedes is pie in the sky. Rogers could sign him and not even flinch but we all know they won't.

I don't believe this is far-fetched at all. I love the suggestion.

True. Given it's Chicago, you may be able to wrangle Eaton away for a combo of Pompey, Greene, and Ramirez. I would do that in a heartbeat.

I honestly see CWS wanting Osuna.

They we don't do the trade then. Our bullpen is thin enough already. Giving up a top tier young closer who is under team control and making no money for several years is dumb. Might as well sign Cespedes, keep our prospects and Osuna rather than having to pay Eaton, lose prospects and pay several million to sign someone comparable for our bullpen

Posted
I would happily trade Osuna in a deal for Eaton. One TJS in at 21 years old and will be throwing a ton of high stress pitches over the 5 years of Eaton's contract. Time to cash in!

If Osuna were the only major piece in a trade for Eaton (which is ridiculous but I'm going to play along). Wouldn't it make more sense to make the trade and sign Jansen. Which would be a bigger upgrade for less money in comparison to signing Cespedes.

It's not like that's even far off, so not sure why you gave that response..

It's likely pretty far off. Every team in baseball would be in on Eaton if you didn't have to offer up a top 50 prospect or major league performing player.

We'd be forking over one of our top 3 prospects + another top 10 guy just to stay competitive in those talks. Eaton would be highly coveted for sure.

How did Eaton come up in this? There is no way they deal Eaton. Good contract and good player. Cespedes in a Jays uni for 5 years at 110 is decent. Much better fielder than JB was.

Jansen is going to get what? 5/80? We are paying Osuna 500K. With the contract Eaton has it would take a huge haul for them to make the trade imo. If the FO believes that Osuna is likely to have a career ending injury or significant injury problems, sure unload him. Maybe Im just thinking with my heart as Osuna is one of my favorite players.

We need a 1B/DH, a corner OF who pref hits from the left side and 2 bullpen arms.

Id like to see Happ and Upton possibly used as trade pieces, have Biagini be the 5th starter. Platoon Zeke and Pompey at one of the corners.

You're not getting Eaton without giving up one of Stroman, Sanchez, Travis, Osuna, Vlad Jr., SRF, Alford, and then more. There is no force trade button in the real MLB, sir. Put down the controller!

I'd go with that. Hell Yeah!

Steamer has eaton projected to be a 2.6 win player and you'd trade Sanchez plus for him. Give me a break.
