jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 Is this a prediction thread or what we want to happen thread? Because a lot of this stuff mentioned seems pretty unrealistic (signing top free agents). It will be interesting with back to back ALCS appearances if free agents warm up to the idea a bit of playing in Canada.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 It will be interesting with back to back ALCS appearances if free agents warm up to the idea a bit of playing in Canada. As long as they offer the most money that wont matter.
Mittens87 Verified Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 kinda sucks that some guys just aren't open to playing in Canada. Most of them would love it once they give it a chance. Pretty sure that's been the case with most players, and also the young players who are disappointed to be drafted by us, like Stroman
Mittens87 Verified Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 As long as they offer the most money that wont matter. Players want to win too. If they up payroll and sign a big name or two, might change some of the other guys minds. Not that we will be signing a bunch of top free agents anyway. But the other guys I'm sure want to know Toronto is serious this year

It should help, but it will come down to money and years ultimately. The Jays were pretty irrelevant in the mid-00's but were the only team willing to go five years on Burnett and Ryan, and they signed both. Money talks. I just don't see this front office going into the upper tier of a s***** free agent market.
Mittens87 Verified Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 (edited) This isn't basketball How so? I don't follow basketball. Like how drafted players don't go straight to Toronto to play? I know, Stroman said he wasn't happy about being with Toronto when he started. Kinda what I'm getting at Edited November 5, 2016 by Mittens87
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 I think we will see more action on trades than free agent signings. We have always had difficulty with free agent signings due to the stigma associated with playing in Canada. Despite the success the last two seasons I dont see that changing, especially since 2 of our marquee players are free agents themselves. I think we will see 1 big FA signing (probably EE or JB) and maybe one or two low level signings to fill gaps. The rest will be trades.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 EE Possibly Reddick A little bit of dumpster diving on the bullpen Navarro as backup (though if it takes $7M like one poster suggested let him go unemployed)

Playing in Toronto is vastly superior to majority of cities. Especially in the summer. People need to stop thinking this is a factor.

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 Miller, Chapman, Jansen. What a year for free agency when it comes to elite closers.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 Miller still has 2 years left on his contract, 9 million per.
ILikeSoccerandBaseball09 Verified Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 I don't know why everyone on 590 is fixated over trading Stroman. Trading Stroman would create a big hole. 2018 Rotation would be Sanchez and Happ (Estrada and Liriano are UFA's). We don't even know if Biagini will be a good starter at the MLB level. If we keep Stro then our rotation won't be f***ed for 2018. 2018: Stroman, Sanchez, Happ and maybe Biagini. Yeah doubt management is trading a young controllable pitcher like Stroman.

Especially when the FA market for pitching is historically bad. I'm always up for trading anyone but we'd need a pretty good player to make it worthwhile IMO.

Probably because his ERA was over 4 or something.

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 Miller still has 2 years left on his contract, 9 million per. Well f*** me. Jansen or Chapman it is
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 Jansen over Chapman all day. Chapman is all FB and if he loses velocity, the effectiveness could decline quick. Jansen's movement on his cutter at 96mph is virtually unhittable, I see him aging better.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 We shouldnt trade a starter unless we get a solid upper tier position player, at least an outfielder with 4-5 WAR annual production. Starting pitchers are still the most sought after commodity.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 Blackmon? Blackmon isn't THAT good. Last year seems like more of an outlier.
Mittens87 Verified Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 Will chapman still be effective say 3-4 years from now? Sure he probably dips below 100 but would it be a bad idea for anyone to give him a 5-6 year contract
skicross1 Verified Member Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 Love to see tolleson or melacon Jansen would be great aswell though would be happy with Cecil Reddick /desmond Eddy Please !! Cespedes woukd be kinda sweet .. but not sure worth breaking the bank for
