Lol Schulman on 590 yesterday said that our LF will most likely be Zeke/Upton by spring training.

Yeah he's probably right. I think Smoak probably gets a lot of AB's in a platoon with Pearce at 1B as well. Will 800+ AB's from Upton, Zeke and Smoak sink our chances at a WC?

Yes it will, Zeke is nothing more than a bench player, he's not a everyday outfielder. It would be a terrible platoon.

I am 100% sure that Zeke will not be on the strong side of any platoon. Career 78 wRC+ vs. RHP and 71 wRC+ last year.

If they don't sign anyone else then they will likely go:

vs. RHP - Smoak 1B and Pearce LF

vs. LHP - Pearce 1B and Upton LF

Even better.

vs. RHP - Pearce at 1B and Pagan/Moss in LF

vs. LHP- Pearce at 1B and Upton in LF

Trade Smoak for a bag of baseballs.

And keep Carrera on the bench as backup OF/pinch runner, or go with Pompey ? Maybe they give Pompey a chance to earn a spot in spring training or, as suggested, Harold Ramirez could have a shot to come in and steal a spot. More likely Ramirez starts the year at AAA, but everyone thought the same with Travis going into 2015.

You're preaching to the choir. Zeke sucks. But what I would do and what I think will happen are two different things.

Atkins implying that they aren't actively looking for another OF.

Ugh.

So I guess Carrera gets the bulk of the AB's against RHP to start the season, he completely craps the bed, and then is replaced/demoted in May.

2016 Colabello minus the PED's: where everyone knows the regression is coming but no one does anything about it.

Have to hope Pompey wins the LF job.

I really hate the inclination this org seems to have to gift roster spots to incumbents with replacement-level talent who happened to finish a few runs above replacement the previous season. Colabello and Goins last year. Carrera this year. Ezequiel Carrera should not be any more than a 5th OF on a team with designs on winning. If he's the strong side of a LF platoon... god help us all.

I think he's not a fan of overpaying for what's left in free agency, or giving up too much in a trade, and I'm fine with that.

If Carrera and Upton are as poor as they could be, pick up someone on waivers mid season or give Pompey a shot.

At least the OF depth in 2017 looks to be solid enough:

Bautista/Pillar

Upton

Pearce

Carrera

Pompey (AAA)

Ramirez (AAA)

Alford (AA)

Smith Jr. (AAA)

Several MiLB options that could contribute.

If Pompey comes out strong in spring training, then Carrera can easily be pushed aside. That's really the only benefit I can see to this. I'm sure the front office would love if a young player wins a spot (like Sanchez last year). I'm not sure what to expect out of Pompey in 2017 or going forward but I'd take him over Zeke in a second.

I'm cool with running out what we have for LF options for now, as long as they've left enough enough room for an addition mid season. Maybe it's best to wait and see exactly what we need (just a platoon guy if Upton hits vs an every day player if not), and make sure we don't already have a good option in house with the young guys.

Exactly - there isn't much available now, but every year there are players released or made available for minimal cost that may catch lighting in a bottle on a switch of teams, and will cost less than the remaining free agents or currently available trade targets.

Plus leaving flexibility in the budget means we can do a Liriano type deal with taking on short term salary if we're in contention for the playoffs.

What about the Cuban?

I'm actually alright with our OF. Just get a good lefty RP.

Plan for Upton in LF. But if Ramirez, Pompey, or Gourriel impress in spring training I'd let them roll with the job to start the year.
