Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Ryan Goins = Javier Baez without the bat They even look similar lol
wk680 Verified Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 There's no place for Goins on this team as it's currently constructed. He needs five years of service time, so he can't refuse assignment, but he will have to clear waivers when he's sent down. Yes I had a bad source that said it was 3 years needed to refuse the assignment. It seems the only way one of Goins, Smoak, Upton or Carrera won't be odd man out is if the Jays went with a 6 man bull pen and 5 man bench. And that's assuming no other additions or the likes of Pompey making the squad. Of course injuries can also occur.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 How crazy of an idea would it be to try and get Joba Chamberlain on a minor league deal for bullpen depth? Seemed to do well for the Indians last season, although only 20IP.

I assume he'll get a spring training invite from another team though.

wk680 Verified Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 lol... teams run with 7 for a reason, sometimes 8, have you not been paying attention? I believe the Jays rotation had the most innings pitched in 2016. If they repeat that in 2017 (big if) why the need for 7 relievers? Also, if you have relievers with options and position players without, you can shuttle some of your relievers back and forth. Needless to say, failing to go with the extra (26th) roster spot was a big mistake. It would have allowed to keep the 7 man pen without such a thin 4 man bench.

You've answered your own question, then. The staff has nothing to do with the pen, and yes RP's with options get moved down and back when teams are taxed if the rotation takes a hit. 6 RP's are unfathomable, it worked in the 70's and 80's, not anymore. The bench will be a strong 4, maybe not early in April as the schedule is lax, but... P.S. SP's innings from last year have no bearing moving forward.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Is there any truth to Blairs comments regarding Rogers increasing the budget to allow for Jose signing while at the same time meeting other needs
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Based on those comments and if the budget is 170 I would say both moss and Blevins are real possibilities As is Bruce

Also, the consensus of this board appears to be that Carrera is slightly above useless and Upton is garbage. Add to that the likelihood of no-bat Jimenez as backup catcher. Seems more like a bench with a strong 1 (Barney) and 3 scrubs.

It's not the end of the world if we start the year with a couple cheaper options as filler for the time being.

Yeah and assuming that Jimenez has the above average defense that he's purported to have than having him on the roster is not that big a deal because Reese McGuire is the real backup if Martin needs to be replaced for a sustained period.

Yes and there may be internal possibilities with Harold Ramirez and Pompey in the OF.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Yes and there may be internal possibilities with Harold Ramirez and Pompey in the OF. You touched on something there that I'm not sure I've seen anyone mention yet - I don't think it should be considered 100% out of the question that Harold Ramirez hits his way into the conversation for a very early call up and stays if he continues to hit in the big leagues.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Personally I would blow it all on Greg Holland. Going from Dermody to Blevins probably doesn't move the needle. Going from Jimenez to Soto probably doesn't matter (we made the playoffs 2 years in a row with a negative as a backup C). Agreed. Back-up catchers usually suck. Thole was able to suck worse than suck itself so he's really an outlier. Jimenez could probably provide what most back-ups would for the league minimum. A scrub catcher and Blevins/Wood/whoever over Jimenez and Loup probably won't make any tangible difference. Maybe half a win better? But then you compare Carrera to someone like Moss or Pagan, and it's a real opportunity to add to the team's projected win total.
