Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 If Smoak doesn't hit its irrelevant. Have to atleast give him an opurtunity. We can't afford to have 4M sit on the bench this year and next.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 Well if there's one positive to Gibbons, it's that he seems to hate Smoak as much as the rest of us, so that platoon idea may not last long. It better not. Yeah when the games started to really matter towards the end of the season and the playoffs, he lost his job to Colabello in 2015 and Encarnacion in 2016. Gibbons just stopped playing him.

We can't afford to have 4M sit on the bench this year and next. Not sure if you're joking? Either way, I think he's had more than enough opportunities, and we now have a much better option in Pearce as full time 1B, with Morales playing a few games when necessary. We should attempt to trade him to anyone who will pay even part of his salary. If no one wants him at all we should release him and take the hit in sunk cost. $4m a year shouldn't prevent us from acquiring anyone. It wasn't that long ago that we were paying Ricky Romero $7.5m to not pitch for us. It's obviously not ideal, but he's shown he's not good enough to play a major role, and is a waste of a bench position. I'd rather have someone who can pinch hit, or someone with more positional flexibility than just 1B.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 You could have avoided the long post by just saying "no" Not sure why I expected an ounce of nuance from you but I guess I learned my lesson. It's great when you don't reply with anything except a variation of "your stupid", except maybe we should be thinking about either not replying or being more substance oriented in that case. Your claim seems to be that all the teams who need an OF/1B are stupid if they let Pearce get signed for ONLY 12.5/2. From what I've read since the signing one of your reasons is that his WAR, WRC+, etc was high when he did in fact play- especially in what was something like half a season full time with the Rays. It's almost as if teams never knew that!

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 Quote from that article "Blue Jays manager John Gibbons indicated Smoak and Pearce will platoon at first" Damn it. I wouldn't get to worried about this. Reporting to the media in the middle of December that Smoak is going to be glued to the bench because he's s*** is not a good idea (even if it's true).
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 I'm still holding out that they're trying to dump Smoak and that talking up a bench role makes him less valuable...? I seriously just do not want to see him hit again. I'm as tired of him as I was of Colby before he left.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 There has to be a team out there that needs 1B depth and has a crappy reliever making somewhere between $4-8m. Just make the swap. Smoak for Jason Motte, or something. Whatever.

Just trade him and be done with it.

Just trade him and be done with it. Yeah at this point just having the roster spot for someone with more value to the team would be an asset. Swap him for a reliever who had a bad season ,or maybe there's an overpaid OF that the Jays can take from another team and use Smoak as a salary dump. I get the sense that the front office likes him though. They wouldn't have extended him if they didn't.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 Smoak to Colorado for Chad Qualls. 2/8.5 for Somak, and 1/6 for Qualls. Hum... That seems pretty realistic. Colorado is probably fishing for a relatively inexpensive veteran 1B and Smoak's hard contact skill (his only skill really) would play up a bit over there.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 Smoak to Colorado for Chad Qualls. 2/8.5 for Somak, and 1/6 for Qualls. They don't need Smoak. They have Desmond Seriously though, adding Smoak into a deal for one of their OFers (allowing Desmond to play the OF - opening up 1st base for Smoak) is a pretty good fit for the Jays.

Yeah, they seem like one of the few teams who might have an interest in rostering him. Qualls might be done, but he was very good as recently as 2015. And even if he is done, we save $2.5M and are finished with the financial commitment after 2017.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 Speaking of Blackmon...has anyone noticed the similarities between Pompey & Blackmon? Good BB%, Low K% throughout their minor league careers. High wRC+ in A and AA, which dropped in AAA. Both run the bases well, yet aren't excellent defensively. Blackmon developed late (in relative terms) and obviously I'm not suggesting Pompey will do the same, but I thought it was eerily interesting. http://i.imgur.com/uPw4aPP.jpg http://i.imgur.com/IZKJ03B.jpg I certainly wouldn't give up Stroman for Blackmon...but I do think he'd be a great trade candidate if you could get him for the equivalent of the 2 WAR player he was in 2014-2015 (Steamers projects him at only 1.3 WAR this year).....and then you hope the improvements he made last year stick. If we got Blackmon at a reasonable price, I'd be comfortable going into the season with Upton/Pompey in LF.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 17, 2016 Posted December 17, 2016 This off season is killing me, so much so that I'm going to make up trade ideas which is lunacy in my opinion, but it has come to this. Who does Travis for Puig? Dodgers need a 2nd basemen, could use the money savings and we need an outfielder. We can then sign Utley who provided 2 War last year, or in a better scenario find a way to get Dozier (which would be a major long shot).
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 17, 2016 Posted December 17, 2016 Or we could also convince Kinsler to come to Canada and figure out a trade for him.

SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 17, 2016 Posted December 17, 2016 Dodgers 2B are projected for 1.7 fWAR...Jays 1.9 Ok ok, we sweeten the pot and throw back up shortstop Ryan Goins into the deal!
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2016 Posted December 17, 2016 Or we could also convince Kinsler to come to Canada and figure out a trade for him. Why not just cut out a step and use the pieces for a Kinsler trade to get a corner OF? Added benefit is not having to worry about Puig smartening up. I'd prefer the low cost Travis as a DL risk vs. Puig's big money prayer.
