Ray Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 If we sign Bautista, he still keeps 10/5 rights correct? I'd assume so. He's still with the same team. Basically automatic NTC if we resign him. Also, I would much rather Dyson or Moss than Revere.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Indeed and I fear that will be the next few years. Shatkins will build up the farm however they can while fielding a .500 team to keep attendance at a reasonable level. As opposed to a proper rebuild. Assessment is probably the Toronto baseball market is such that attendance will plummet to crazy levels if a Cubs style rebuild was pursued. what is this assertion based on, your own *******?

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 We should be taking another 2 shots in the next 2 years. Otherwise Trade Happ, Estrada, Donaldson, Tulo, Martin, Liriano etc.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Man that makes him so much less desirable. Not really. He's likely only coming here on a short term contract anyway. And given his age he probably would want to go to a contender if the Jays were out of it. If not, he finishes his career with the Blue Jays Win Win

Don't like it? Call the O's again or go play for Boston for free. Heck I'd even see if we could write it in his contract that he waives all 10-5 rights. f*** him, he has no leverage right now.

I guess my thought is this team could go in to rebuild mode as early as next off season (Josh Donaldson's future as a Blue Jay being the driving force along with our season's result). JB could still help bring in talent from any team needing a power bat at a deadline.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 We have all the leverage right now over Bautista. He has very little places to go at this point. 3 years, $50 million seems fair. Structure it so he gets the same that he would've had he accepted the QO. $17.2 million 1st year with an opt-out, and then you can do a team option for the 3rd year. I think that's fair. You can probably get him for cheaper than that too if push comes to shove.

JB could still help bring in talent from any team needing a power bat at a deadline. They'd get a haul for JD, Happ, Estrada, Martin, Tulo, Pillar, Osuna, Pearce and have the best farm system in the game. Sure it'd help if he could return something but the JAys would barely have any salary on the books at that point anyway.

If he's having a great year - but the Jays are out of it and we can get assets for him - and he rejects a trade - he's getting this: http://i.imgur.com/ydtf14y.gif

Ray Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Man I would absolutely love to flip Happ right now. Sell high, even though I do think he can be as good as he was during last season. It's unfortunate none of our young arms are ready to come up just yet. If we could somehow flip a package around Happ + mid-level prospects for Blackmon, that'd be great.

Even with regression, Happ projects to be better than Blackmon next year, I don't understand why people are so adamant on getting a likely below average outfielder.

Both players have 2 years remaining.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Anyone who wants to trade Happ needs a plan to replace him effectively in the rotation. It would be much easier to just grab an expensive outfielder from someone.

It would be much easier to just grab an expensive outfielder from someone. It's certainly not ideal, ideal would have been signing Fowler. However, I kinda feel like there's more decent SP options than there are available higher end outfielders. Guys like Chacin (I actually think he'd make a fantastic reliever, but he's possibly a viable back end starter and probably wouldn't be too expensive). Latos (good bounce back candidate). Nova (what the hell are the Pirates doing to players anyway? Give their pitching coach whatever he f***ing wants to come here). Tyson Ross, maybe Peavy.

Happ might not even make their rotation. They are probably looking to trade medicore veterans like Kazmir and McCarthy, not acquire another one in Happ. If they are truly looking for another SP it's just another front end option, not any arm. Kershaw, Maeda, Hill, Urias, De Leon, McCarthy, Kazmir, Wood, Stewart, Stripling, Ryu

Actually, if we were to trade a SP, some of those would make nice targets too.

I'm not as optimistic about those guys to be honest. Ross and Nova could be good, but I feel like Nova would be too expensive and Ross has his injuries. I'd rather just roll with Happ and Seth Smith or something.
skirbs11 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Trade for Dyson Trade for Blackmon without giving up Stroman Sign Ianetta Sign one of Feliz or Zieglar Sign one of Logan or Blevins Call it a day, IMO I would only want Edwin back and we nowill have a logjam athe 1B/DH.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Actually that could be a pretty decent OF for not that much cash. LF/RF - Blackmon (L). 9M est arb. That could affect his trade value. Will probably be a + defensive COF. Adds a nice power/speed combo and from what I read has made some changes that could have lead to increased pop. CF - Pillar ®. Lg min. Great defensive CF with some speed LF/RF - Jarrod Dyson (L). 4M est arb. Great defensive OF with good speed. Should get on base. Can backup CF when Pillar sits or is injured. 4th OF (LF/RF) - BJ Upton ®. 1-5M depending who you believe. Can handle both COF spots. Has some speed. Has some pop. Should hit lefties decently. No stars (although you could argue Blackmon if he gets a boost to defensive value moving from CF and some of that pop sticks), but its cheap (under 20M) and is potentially great defensively with lots of pop and speed mixed in. Really depends what it costs to get Blackmon. I agree trading a starter for him doesn't make sense, would have to be MiLB stuff.

It's like Colby Rasmus' only he has much higher contact skills.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I usually agree with you but not here. The Donaldson trade really? What's wrong with what I said? There are always people who want to trade A + B + C + D prospects for star X, but there's a consequence for it down the line. I love the Donaldson trade; I'm just saying that AA needed a lot of nukes to make 2015 happen and that the all-in attitude isn't sustainable forever. People getting frustrated with Shapiro and Atkins should remember what AA left them with. (Just to be clear, I'm not slamming AA. Just encouraging a bit of a post mortem on the ebb and flow of building a team like the 2015-present Blue Jays.)

Sounds pretty lovely although I would prefer to avoid Ianetta. We need to find a backup that can frame. He had one year otherwise he's been complete trash. If we could get Blackmon without trading Stroman nobody would be happier than me. Love the guy. I think we all want Dyson hes a no brainer. 4 good pen options. Feliz seems virtually fixed just concerned about the homeruns he gives up. His command and velocity is back. We still have some options I'm not concerned yet. If its not Stroman it will be Happ + something else. Maybe we can pawn Smoak off on them as well.
