J.P Morosi today...

• With the Blue Jays' signing of Kendrys Morales now official, the team is intensifying its search for a left-swinging outfielder capable of hitting leadoff. Two names high on their list: Dexter Fowler (free agent) and Adam Eaton (White Sox trade candidate).

Jon Heyman today...

Blue Jays present Encarnacion with offer

The Blue Jays remain interested in retaining free-agent slugger Edwin Encarnacion, putting a four-year, $80 million offer on the table for the first baseman/designated hitter, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

Toronto appears to be serious about bringing Encarnacion back despite recently signing Kendrys Morales.

Encarnacion, who will turn 34 in January, hit .263/.357/.529 with 42 home runs and an American League-leading 127 RBIs in 2016. He also walked a career-high 87 times in 702 plate appearances.

Other teams that have been linked to Encarnacion this offseason include the Astros, Rangers, Red Sox and Yankees. According to Heyman, even a couple of National League clubs have inquired about Encarnacion, indicating he's seen as a serviceable everyday first baseman.

Take it for what it's worth... Rumours!

I wonder what Alex Gordon would cost. He's coming off a horrible year and would be due $60M over 3 years (for is age 33, 34 + 35 seasons). With both his defense and base running in decline, we've likely seen the end of his 4-6 WAR seasons, but he still could bounce back and be a very solid player.

I wonder if KC views him as a negative asset at this point. Could you get them to eat say $15M and give up next to nothing for him?

To be honest - looking at Gordon's decline might be a cautionary tail against signing Dexter Fowler...

I don't think KC would give up on Gordon that easily, he has had some awful offensive years before.

I think he is an improvement over the likes of Upton, but at that money I would expect a significant improvement

The idea of trading assets for guys in hopes they have a bounce back year heading in to their mid 30s is kinda scary. Focus on guys like McCutchen, Puig, yes they'd cost more but only 2 years left on their contracts and prime candidates to have a big year or two as the ROI.

KC probably just holds on to him and hopes he regains his value so they don't have to eat money on that contract.

It's all about cost. If you can get Gordon for nothing and have KC eat some of the remaining money - then I'd look at that over what it would cost to acquire McCutchen. Would your rather have Gordon for 3 years $45M or a platoon bat like Reddick at 4 years $52M?. I'm just tossing around ideas. Gordon's a lefty who doesn't need a platoon partner, high BB% who could hit at the top of the lineup (if he rebounds).

BTW - Puig is a very unique option. I'd certainly take a hard look at him to see what he would cost.

Not sure if this has been addressed elsewhere (or in this thread), but why has the new CBA held up FA signings so far?

are teams hoping with the new CBA that the loss of 1st round pick will disappear?

Is there a chance that the compensation for tendered FA will disappear? ie. the Jays won't get two supplemental picks if they don't resign Bautista and EE

Is it strictly so teams will see where the salary penalty level will be set?

I hear you on Gordon though I don't think you can get him for nothing and I don't expect him to bounce back with one of his .350 BABIP type seasons to up the OBP enough to be our leadoff batter... Royals are built with average bats and defense minded players, they probably value him more than we would.

Puig would be most ideal but would probably take a SP to get the ball rolling. We can't beat what the White Sox could dangle to rape the Dodgers system though.

I think it's mostly big teams waiting on what the limits and penalties will be for luxury tax. If the teams at or near the threshold can add another 5-10 million without taking a penalty it changes what they can offer to big FA players, so there is no point in them signing if they feel they could get another bid elsewhere. Also, not that it really matters but if a 26th man is part of the regular season roster it means another MLB contract to consider at the start of the year.

Jays loose Cecil with no real lefty in the pen but Loup. I guess they are thinking at worst Liriano if he doesn't get a starter roll. Not a answer to the lefty problem but should of offered Benoit a one year deal......

We will get one of Logan or Blevins. Bank on it

Still a chance they will. I haven't read anything indicating they were offering a deal, but also nothing that says they would not.

I've always been a huge Eaton fan. Bring him in pls

Eaton's gonna cost an arm and a leg that I don't quite know Atkins/Shapiro would be willing to give up. They value prospects a lot.

If they can get Eaton with Stroman being the main piece, I'd do that trade in a heartbeat. Do that and stretch out Biagini as a starter.

I don't think now is the time to trade Stroman. The counting stats for him this season likely lowered his trade value despite the great xFIP.

I think he was onto something with that heavy slider usage in July/August so I'd wait a year and reassess his value.

We really have no idea what causes injuries. Slider usage may. It also may not. We definitely don't know for certain enough to trade him, or we might as well trade Liriano too.

I don't know if that's going to be enough. Better add Cespedes, Jensen and Chapman.

Ok how's this:

It's like going to the club and setting your eyes on Ryan Gosling and end up going home with Danny Devito?

For anyone who watched Breaker High. Its hard for me to see Ryan Gosling as this heartthrob that Hollywood turned him into. I just remember him being a gangly dweeb who got struck out with every girl he talked to except the weirdest one on the show.

Ok take out the Ferrari, make it only one custom made suit, make it one escort for every week, and the Blue Jays season tickets in the 500 level. Not as outrageous anymore.
