No more Thole! Jays outrighted him and he declared free agency. Now we can get a real backup catcher..

Thole wasn't real... Whew! Then why to I have such vivid nightmares of him and butterfly pitches, swings and misses !!!

In about 96 percent of his games as Pirates manager, Clint Hurdle has written Andrew McCutchen's name on the lineup card.

Hurdle might not have that luxury much longer.

Less than three weeks before MLB's winter meetings, there are signs the Pirates are ready to trade their star center fielder. At the recent general managers meetings, Pirates general manager Neal Huntington indicated other clubs have inquired about McCutchen.

On Wednesday, Hurdle told the Tribune-Review he isn't certain how much longer McCutchen will remain in Pittsburgh.

“I'll take it one day at a time,” Hurdle said. “I think any general manager that's in a market similar to the one we're in has to explore the possibility of (trading) players who have one or two years left on their contracts. You have to see what value is there to keep or to move.

“That's the way we're going to need to continue to operate. It's the hard part of what we get to do.”

McCutchen, who is on vacation in Hawaii, was unavailable for comment.

“Andrew has been very black and white in the conversations I've had with him,” Hurdle said. “He's told me, ‘I'm under contract here, so I plan on playing here. However, I don't call all the shots, either.' ”

Would anyone be happy with Adam Lind as a 1B platoon?

Maybe/maybe not

wRC+ the last 3 seasons

2014 - 142

2015 -119

2016 - 92

2017 projects at 108

Still has 20 HR power

He's almost certainly a better LH bat than Smoak next year

McCutchen for Pillar, Urena, Greene, Jon Harris, DJ Davis, + absorbing the entire contract

Does that get it done or am I way off?

I think that's too much.

That's a good sign for my progress here lol, I'm usually way under..

How about this?

McCutchen for Pillar, Greene, Harris + Contract

Just agree to take Harrison in the deal as well. Pirates will be so happy that they saved money it would probably only take Pompey to get it done.

For sure they'd want Pillar and then we're still an outfielder short

Serious question. How much would we really be upgrading in replacing Pillar with McCutchen? He projects for 3.6 WAR, which is pretty much what Pillar has averaged in his first 2 season.

We know what to expect from Pillar. I guess the question is what you all expect from McCutchen. I don't think Steamer is too far out of line.

The projections are highly biased. Pablo Sandoval is projected to have 1 WAR. Pillar is only projected around 2

Nobody does any variance analysis. Someone needs to look at actuals vs 2016 projections to determine if these projections are any good in the first place

Well Pillar's WAR is mainly from his elite defence. With losing EE and Jose you can argue offense is needed more than defense right now.

Cutch's value as a batter would be much higher IF he reverts back to his form from prior to the season just gone.

FWIW I'm expecting both to be better than last season at the plate. Pillar had an injury for much of the season and Cutch has consistently been one of the best players in baseball.

Well if we want offense we could just keep Pillar and bring back Saunders or Bautista for something similar to what Cutch has left. I just don't buy that he's still a 6+ WAR player, which is what you would need to believe to make a trade.

Yeah we'd need to give up a lot and there's no guarantee he's still elite.

I think he'd be significantly better than Saunders or Bautista though, he's only just turned 30.

Still don't see us making any big Trades but if we are going to trade pillar then Colorado is still my first call

Pillar Upton Smoak Tellez and Pompey and maybe if required Happ to seal the deal or a Sean Ried foley! Though Happ helps offset more of the payroll coming back on the Blackmon and Cargo trade for us! I'd try foley first and we still would probably only be adding around or taking on 20 mill dollars for both !

I think he would be better as well. The point I was trying to make was that Pillar+Bautista would be comparable in value to McCutchen+Upton/Carrera, not to mention the lost prospects

Cutch can't play CF anymore though. I can't see this FO trading away all these prospects after they want to rebuild the system. Might as well just sign Bautista if you want to add "offence" and keep Pillar in Centre.

I think the front office probably agrees with you. They don't seem to want to take too many risks, which is sensible.

I'd expect Pittsburgh to mainly want prospects so I don't see us as a good trade partner anyway. They'd prob prefer Pompey to Pillar but with more high end prospects.

Though I agree that I can't see us making a trade for McCutchen, Upton can play CF as can Pompey, if we lost Pillar and didn't directly replace him.

For the money Bautista wants, I wouldn't want him back.

You don't trade for McCutchen and go into the season with Upton or Pompey in CF.. The whole reason of trading for him would be for the upgrade he provides. Well Upton or Pompey in CF just lose all the value you got from Cutch.

I would change the sentence that "For the Money Bautista is going to get, I'd want him back".
