If the FO has fairly reliable reason to believe that McCutchen will bounce back to elite level next year, all of these calculations can be waived away by arguing that the 5 wins from McCutchen are wins 84-88 in the next two years, which makes them worth a lot more than 8M a piece.

Good point

Question : if we DFA'd SMOAK right now what takes place action Wise?

Also what would we be on the hook for total contract less 500,000 or just this year less 500,000 ?

What. Still have to pay his $4,000,000

I think Cutch will come back fine. He had something going on this year either injury or mental, or a little bit of both. He started the season off slowly like he usually does most years(.780 OPS in April), March/April has historically been his worst months over his whole career(.766OPS for his Career). So he was actually above average to begin the year. Then for whatever reason weather it be an injury he was playing though or he was pressing too much he forgot how to hit 6.5 BB% and 25.5 K%, with a .699 OPS for May/June/July, which have always been his best months during his career. The coach then gave him a mental break and benched him for the 1st week of August in which he saw no playing time at all. From then on until the end of the season he had a 13.9 BB%, 14.8 K%, .852 OPS, including a .886 OPS in September. I think we'll see close to the old Cutch we know and love again next year.

It wouldn't be 5 extra wins though as if Cutch wasn't here there would be a replacement. Say you could sign Reddick for the same 14 Million, well then its an upgrade of 2.5 Wins which changes the outlook. You'd still have to replace Travis's production and given he'd be making league minimum you just created another hole on the team.

Not to mention you are losing 3 big prospects...

I think it's obvious to everyone that the numbers change depending on the other moving parts. My point was that a rigid analysis like the one done above, while useful, probably doesn't have much actual utility because we have no idea how the front office values wins at their projected place on the win curve.

I think Josh Reddick could be on our radar and one thing that could be appealing to him is the fact his old pal Donaldson is here.

It may be small but its still works in our favour.

It can be a factor in the sense that Donaldson could help to assuage concerns that Reddick might have about playing in Canada. In that sense, it can help level the playing field for the Jays.

Yeah I see what you are saying. Even if they value those wins higher (For the Blue Jays those wins would be worth more than any other club since Rogers owns SN) I could never see this FO making a trade like that. There are much more efficient ways of adding wins than trading those 4 players for 2 years of McCutchen. And given the Blue Jays made a similar deal with Tulo I'm not sure they will want to go down that road again.

I don't disagree. I wouldn't make that deal.

Why can't we just sign Bautista to the type of deal Papi signed with the Redsox.

Bautista could sill be a hall of famer

1. He'd almost certainly never agree to that even though I'd love it

2. No chance whatsoever

I just saw Ken Rosanthal post on twitter that Edwin signed a 5/145 contract with Toronto and almost died at my desk.

If Fowler is a pipe dream, maybe Jon Jay and Josh Reddick? Maybe you could go Holliday at DH with that many lefties. Kind of like the balance of that lineup tho.

Can May be converted back? The Twins are so stupid.

Maybe. He has bad back issues. I really don't think they are stupid anymore. Everything Falvey and Levine have said seems to have them pointed in the right direction.

Rotoworld with this....

Edwin Encarnacion's agent Paul Kinzer told Sportsnet 590 The Fan that his client has received an offer from the Blue Jays "but it's not where the camp wanted it to be."

SB Nation's Chris Cotillo is passing along notes from that interview on Canada's top sports radio station. Kinzer said Encarnacion's preference is to return to Toronto, but it's going to take a hefty sum given the landscape of this free agent market. EE is arguably the best bat available, having tallied 42 home runs and 127 RBI in 160 games this summer for the Jays. He boasts a .912 OPS (146 OPS+) over the last five years. Kinzer added that he expects a resolution before the Winter Meetings in December.

I'm happy we actually gave him an offer, that's definitely a step in the right direction.

Wonder what that offer was, probably 60-80M.
