TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Wilin Rosario for backup catcher? Or do you want all defense for that role.? You'd like one or the other. Not someone who is useless at both.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Trade for Dyson, platoon him with Upton. Yeah that's not great offence but overall value would probably be a huge surplus. Why settle though? We could literally dump BJ and it would make the team better.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Cleveland is going to pick up his option, without question. couldn't...edit..quick...enough. I see he has a club option now - he's not a FA....it's a no-brainer.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Man, I could see the Jays going after Bruce. If the Mets are smart they'd value Conforto more anyway. But yeah if the Jays get Bruce he better not touch the field on defence.

The front office seems to like him though. I could see the Mets dumping him for very little in return. Not the player I'd go after but wouldn't shock me if the Jays got him.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Wilin Rosario for backup catcher? Or do you want all defense for that role.? We will not be spending a lot of money for a back up catcher not while paying what we do for Martin. Spanky and me already decided on Jeff Mathis for the job. Hits Lhp, best year was as a jay and might be willing to come here, plus probably will cost 2 mil or under to boot. As we have greater needs and money needed elsewhere to plug holes!

I think Shatkins took a serious look at him because they thought he'd be a slight upgrade over Saunders (and a more durable option). Saunders came back from the dead and had a huge 1st half and we all scoffed at the idea they wanted to deal this guy for Jay Bruce. Then Saunders showed his true colours in the 2nd half and we could see why Shatkins was looking at Bruce as a slight upgrade. I don't think our previous interest in Bruce is any indication moving forward...let's be honest, the market for OFers we could acquire while trading Michael Saunders was incredibly bare.

Great minor league numbers, grades as a high end framer and has the versatility to play 2B and 3B as well.

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2016 Author Posted October 28, 2016 Please no Jeff Mathis. We're finally rid of that parasite Thole. Replacing him with Thole v1.1 would be so unsexy.

I love this idea - however, I wonder how much we'd be willing to give up to get him when we just got McGuire.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Is Ellis would not cost much but do you think he would get a starting gig somewhere?

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2016 Author Posted October 28, 2016 I love this idea - however, I wonder how much we'd be willing to give up to get him when we just got McGuire. Trading with the Dodgers makes me nervous. Their only catcher next year is Grandal, who tends to get hurt, so it seems like a great chance to break Barnes in. If they don't want to do that, why not?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 I hope you guys are right about Bruce, but just saying I could see a scenario where he's a trade target. One year of control and shouldn't cost much to acquire. Man I want the off season to start already. Let's hear about the damn moves.

Not the player I'd go after but wouldn't shock me if the Jays got him. Agree. As much fun as it is speculating on who we can get, odds are we'll get Carrera back through arbitration, and then either sign or trade for Bruce. We know the front office like both, and Gibby loves Carrera. Bruce would go to DH when Upton, Pillar and Carrera are starting, but I'd expect him to play at least as many in the field as Saunders did this year, unfortunately.

Don't forget they were linked to Bruce again before he signed for the Mets - we ended up with Upton for much less money instead.

So who then? You can stop dreaming on Castro, he isn't going to come here and play under Martin, he'll get a FT gig. Slim pickings bro... unless we trade, but why for a back-up catcher. I see Mathis and Conger that are good defensively with a half decent bat. Alex Avila (30) Drew Butera (34) Jason Castro (30) Hank Conger (29) A.J. Ellis (36) Ryan Hanigan (36) — $3.75MM club option with an $800K buyout Nick Hundley (33) Chris Iannetta (34) — $4.25MM club option Jonathan Lucroy (31) — $5.25MM club option with a $25K buyout Jeff Mathis (34) Dioner Navarro (33) A.J. Pierzynski (40) Wilson Ramos (29) Carlos Ruiz (38) — $4.5MM club option with a $500K buyout Jarrod Saltalamacchia (32) Geovany Soto (34) Kurt Suzuki (33) Matt Wieters (31)
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 It would have to be as a DH. He's worse than Bautista and Saunders in the OF. Perhaps. He'd still make a suitable DH- in my opinion.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 That's gross. No thanks. You think that's bad, wait until you see the backup for those 4 outfielders - Chris Colabello /s
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Trading with the Dodgers makes me nervous. Their only catcher next year is Grandal, who tends to get hurt, so it seems like a great chance to break Barnes in. If they don't want to do that, why not? I assume they re-sign AJ Ellis. Kershaw is so lonely without him.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 (edited) I want Jay Bruce nowhere near this team. I thought we were trying to get more athletic and faster. If Bautista accepts a QO you tell him he will come to Spring Training with the chance to win the First Base job otherwise you're the DH. Edited October 28, 2016 by Jonn
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 If Bautista comes back for one year I suspect it will be after he rejects the QO, tests the market, and sees no offers worth taking. I doubt his ego will allow him to accept the QO, and maybe he will get a 3-4 year offer somewhere else. Looking at the alternatives, JB back for one year would be a pretty solid development if it happens.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Don't forget they were linked to Bruce again before he signed for the Mets - we ended up with Upton for much less money instead. Yeah but why were they linked? Because of the Saunders trade most likely. Not necessarily because of actual renewed interest.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 I see no scenario where Bautista accepts the QO.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Yeah but why were they linked? Because of the Saunders trade most likely. Not necessarily because of actual renewed interest. Fingers crossed! Even best case Bruce would be a short term outfield solution.
