TRM Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I think I would (like) to see something like: Trade for Ethier (Send them Smoak in lieu of eating money). Re-sign Navarro as the backup catcher (assuming he's willing this time). That should allow us to also give Martin a few extra days off, which probably helps his bat. Re-sign Edwin at 1B. Re-sign Cecil (and fast, before someone else starts to woo him) Sign Holland (talk him into taking a 1 year deal as the setup man somehow) Sign Reddick C - Martin 1B - Encarnacion 2B - Travis SS - Tulo 3B - Donaldson CF - Pillar LF - Pompey RF - Reddick DH - Ethier Bench: Navarro, Barney, Upton SP - Sanchez SP - Stroman SP - Happ SP - Estrada SP - Liriano C - Osuna RP - Holland, Cecil, Grilli, Biagini, Loup, Dermody, ? (long man) My guesses at costs per year of the additions / re-signings: Ethier: 13.5M, Navarro: 2.5M, EE: 20M, Cecil: 7M, Holland: 7M, Reddick: 17M That would put payroll at 185M (not sure we can go that high, but talking ideal case here). A team with less k's and higher average, better defense, and a better pen. This is pretty good, but Fowler over Reddick if the prices are similar, and Zeke/Upton platoon is probably more likely than Pompey.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I've always found that most teams and most sports have certain players that operate as perfect barometers for determining if someone gets that sport/team, or if they are a f***ing moron. My favorite example of this is Tony Romo in the NFL. Anyone who thinks that Tony Romo is bad or "unclutch" objectively a moron. The same thing applies in hockey with PK Subban. The example I always use for the Blue Jays is Brett Cecil. You can tell A LOT about someone as a Jays fan simply by asking them how they feel about Brett Cecil. lol
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Yikes. His wRC+ has dropped from 167 to 129 to 118 over his 3 years in the league. He needed a massive second half to avoid being a league average bat this past season. Like Cespedes, Puig and Solar...he came in hot and fizzled out as pitchers adjusted. Cespedes has re-adjusted to the league and is back to being elite....maybe that's what Abreu did in the 2nd half of this year....maybe not. Very risky at that price - but a moot point as he's not a FA anyway. Abreu had no protection in the lineup, and was constantly being pitched around. The first half of the season he was swinging at the borderline stuff trying to make something happen, second half he stopped chasing.
rydermike Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Hopefully Shapiro can do what he did last year and beat out the market by acting quick. AKA Happ and Estrada before the market set itself with Price. Most likely won't be able to do it with Encarnacion, who will likely wait a bit and capitalize on money, but hopefully he can lock up Benoit and Cecil very quick for reasonable deals and maybe another fielder
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Safer asset with a longer track record? I'd definitely do it if they both had 4 years of control. It being four for Sanchez and three for Calhoun might tip it in favour of Sanchez. I dunno, in terms of long term assets I have a hard time taking the pitcher over the bat. I hear ya. But Sanchez's stuff looks pretty legit. He doesn't have a track record because he's really young. I think he's a good bet to be pretty good the next 4 years. Injuries with pitchers are always a concern though so I agree with you on that. Calhoun has a track record but we'll see how he ages. His bat is good but it's not special, his value is largely tied up in his defense. Turning 30 next year. I also think the market has plenty of starting caliber corner OF players. The pitching market is junk. Further makes Sanchez more valuable IMO. And of course Sanchez is a lot younger which could allow us the ability to lock him up for a lot longer than we would have Calhoun. Not sure how much that is worth though.

I'd actually prefer Reddick to Fowler at the same money (I feel like he'll age better, and that 12% K rate is really sexy). I don't mind Pompey being used as a trade chip either, but I feel like his defense and wheels are worth taking an actual legit extended look at. I think his upside is higher than Zeke, and if he does bomb then we have Upton. Plus having Pompey in LF and Pillar in CF would be one hell of a OF defense.

That changes things if he gets locked up to a favourable extension with some team options. I don't attach much value to the possibility unless it happens though. Actually we might see something like that this offseason with Stro or Sanchez. Shatkins locked up Carrasco and Kluber before they had to in Cleveland.

Dr Negative Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Davidi on Tim and Sid mentioning guys that we could look at are Blackmon, Inciarte, Calhoun, McCutchen and Eaton I like those players but I don't see how we have the bullets to get them without Stroman, Sanchez or possibly Osuna.

We don't have enough for Cutch... Calhoun and Eaton would be expensive... and the other two wouldn't cost near as much.(I'd rather pass on them)

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I'd rather shop in the Alex Dickerson / David Peralta tier if we're going to trade for an outfielder.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I'd rather not trade... A lot of money coming off the payroll...
wamco Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I think most of our holes can be addressed through FA without too much risk. I think you're right, we don't need to trade from our strengths to fill our needs reasonably this offseason. Now is the time spend a bit. Agreed. No need to overthink it. Sign a Platoon bat to pair with upton in left. Sign a rf ( Desmond/fielder) , sign a dh ( Beltran/morales) or rotate guys through the position between tulo, Martin, travis), sign a rf. We bring back an awesomely consistent starting staff, our 7 8 9 bullpen as well as some other bullpen arms. Cecil and Benoit or replacements could be had. I expect the payroll to be 170m and we'll be at about 120m after Arby.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Biggest problem with Reddick is that I see Gibby playing him every day. Gibby did a good job running the Reed Johnson/Frank Catalanatto platoon back in 2005 & 2006. The Cat was never in the lineup against lefties, and he did use Reed Johnson effectively as a bat against LHP, defensive replacement for the Cat late in games, and as a rotating OF when Wells or Rios needed a day off.

It always sounds easy so easy as an armchair GM, but options are really limited. What do you do if Matt Joyce doesn't want to play here or someone else offers Desmond a 5 year deal. It will take a combination of free agent signings and trades to accomplish our goals in my opinion.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Angels could use some pitching offer up something for Kole Calhoun i think he would look pretty good in Blue. Always liked him for some reason. As a corner OF bat who is left-handed with some pop and speed, Kole Calhoun would definitely be a nice fit. Plus would be interesting to see the type of numbers he'd put up playing half of his games at the Rogers Centre.

It's not easy to get the perfect fits, and then you would head into trades if necessary of course, but we'll be in the drivers seat hopefully with money to spend, a 2 x in row Alcs team, and looking for imo a 1b, a rf and a lf platoon bat in a fa market that seems to have good options, some without long term, high AAV commitments
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 I'd feel more comfortable using Chapman as how Cleveland used Andrew Miller in the postseason then Jansen. Is there any reliever like that who could be acquired via trade? Rasiel Iglesias is someone i'd love to target. Moved to the bullpen this past season and was pretty damn good.
